In young, growing white New Zealand rabbits the third, fourth, and fifth intercostal nerves were resected anteriorly on the right side. Six months later the animals developed structural left convex scoliosis, with a Cobb angle ranging from 15 to 31 degrees. The vascular structure changes of the anterior chest wall were evaluated by measuring surface temperature and fluorescein intensity of the pectoral muscles, and the capillary density of the pectoral and intercostal muscle and periosteal parts of the ribs after angiography. In five normal control rabbits there was neither scoliotic deformity

Improvement of nerve regeneration and functional recovery following nerve injury is a challenging problem in clinical research. We have already shown that following rat sciatic nerve transection, the local administration of triiodothyronine (T3) significantly increased the number and the myelination of regenerated axons. Functional recovery is a sum of the number of regenerated axons and reinnervation of denervated peripheral targets. In the present study, we investigated whether the increased number of regenerated axons by T3-treatment is linked to improved reinnervation of hind limb muscles.

OBJECTIVE: Cervical dystonia (or spasmodic torticollis) is a neurological condition that results in abnormal movements and head posture, for which initial surgical intervention typically involves selective denervation of the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) and paraspinal muscles. However, muscle reactivation of the distal SCM stump can result in recurrent symptoms. In this study, the authors present their preliminary experience with distal SCM stump resection following selective denervation, with the aim of evaluating the effectiveness of the procedure and identifying patients who may benefit from t

Progressive motoneuronopathy (PMN) is an autosomal recessive mouse disease, which is characterized by the development of hind limbs paralysis rapidly progressing to the anterior parts of the body, muscular atrophy, respiratory depression, and death at 6-7 postnatal weeks. Here, we recorded the resting membrane potential (RMP), spontaneous miniature endplate potentials (MEPPs), and quantum content of endplate potentials (EPP) at the diaphragm muscle fibers in controls and PMN mice aged 18 to 43 days. In control animals, there was a progressive increase in RMP, MEPP frequency and EPP quantum con

Nineteen patients developed polyneuropathy complicating critical illness. They had been admitted to a critical care unit following intubation for cardiac or pulmonary disease and had developed sepsis and multiple organ failure. Approximately one month following intubation, failure to wean from the ventilator and limb weakness prompted neurological referral. Examination disclosed weakness and wasting of muscles and impaired tendon reflexes in most, but not all, patients. Electrophysiological studies in 17 patients revealed attenuated compound muscle and sensory nerve action potential amplitudes

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To enhance understanding of spontaneous laryngeal muscle reinnervation following severe recurrent laryngeal nerve injury by testing the hypotheses that 1) nerve fibers responsible for thyroarytenoid muscle reinnervation can originate from multiple sources and 2) superior laryngeal nerve is a source of reinnervation.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, controlled, animal model.
METHODS: A combination of retrograde neuronal labeling techniques, immunohistochemistry, electromyography, and sequential observations of vocal fold mobility were employed in rat model of chronic recurren

Muscle injuries that were suspected only on the basis of clinical examination are now readily demonstrated and characterized using MR imaging. Imaging is used not only for assessment of location, type, and severity of muscle injuries; it plays an important role in treatment planning, and the detection of complications. MR imaging also is useful in nontraumatic muscle disorders including congenital, inflammatory, and infectious myositis, and in cases of denervation, MR imaging is valuable for diagnosis, staging, and prognostication. In cases where the origin of myopathy is unknown, MR imaging c

Spontaneous electrical activity of muscle originates either from one, a few, or a large number of muscle fibers; the responses from the latter are similar to those of motor units. Responses from one or a few fibers are those arising in the end-plate zone of normal muscle and the electrical activity is associated with denervation and myotonia. The motor unit-like activity may either be discharged at randomly varying intervals, as in fasciculations, or at intervals similar to the discharges during voluntary effort, as in hemifacial spasm, Isaacs' syndrome, and in infantile spinal muscular atroph

BACKGROUND: Progressive atrophy of Schwann cells in denervated nerve stumps is a major reason for progressive failure of functional recovery after peripheral nerve injury and surgical repair.
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether side-to-side nerve bridges between an intact donor nerve and a recipient denervated distal nerve stump promote nerve growth and in turn, protect distal nerve stumps to improve axon regeneration after delayed surgical repair.
METHODS: In Sprague-Dawley rats, 1 or 3 side-to-side common peroneal (CP) nerve bridges were used to bridge between the donor intact tibial (TIB) nerve

We report the case of a patient who had weakness of the fourth dorsal interosseous (DI) and third palmar interosseous (PI) muscles resulting in the abducted position of the little finger at rest. Electromyographic abnormalities were limited to only these muscles with partial denervation findings. The results of routine nerve conduction studies and imaging techniques were normal. Clinical and electrophysiological findings suggested that the lesion had occurred distal to the point where the very small motor branches to these muscles exit the deep palmar branch of the ulnar nerve.

Manipulation of the nerve supply to the posterior cricoarytenoid (PCA) muscle has potential for ameliorating the symptoms of some neurologic conditions such as abductor spasmodic dysphonia. The anatomy of the nerve supply to the PCA is better understood than in previous eras, but the anatomical understanding has not translated to clinical application yet. Microscopic dissection allowed the identification and measurement of the branches from the recurrent laryngeal nerves (RLNs) to the PCA in 43 human cadaver larynges. The cricothyroid (CT) joint was the primary landmark for measurement. Other

It is well-known that, after nerve transection and surgical repair, misdirected regrowth of regenerating motor axons may occur in three ways. The first way is that the axons enter into endoneurial tubes that they did not previously occupy, regenerate through incorrect fascicles and reinnervate muscles that they did not formerly supply. Consequently the activation of these muscles results in inappropriate movements. The second way is that, in contrast with the precise target-directed pathfinding by elongating motor nerves during embryonic development, several axons rather than a single axon gro

1. Ventricular tachycardia generates complex changes in baroreceptor input to the central nervous system: arterial baroreceptors are unloaded while cardiopulmonary receptors are stimulated. In humans with heart diseases, muscle sympathetic nerve activity increases during ventricular tachycardia. This suggests that arterial baroreceptor-mediated sympathoexcitation overrides cardiopulmonary receptor-mediated sympathoinhibition. However, the relative roles of each reflex are difficult to determine in humans. 2. We measured efferent renal sympathetic neural responses to simulated ventricular tachy

The transolecranon approach for the treatment of distal humerus fractures and nonunions is commonly used. A complication of the standard osteotomy is denervation of the anconeus muscle, which provides dynamic stability to the lateral side of the elbow by preventing varus and posterolateral rotatory instability. This article describes the anconeus flap transolecranon (AFT) approach, which utilizes an internervous plane to preserve the anconeus muscle and a chevron-shaped osteotomy for maximal joint exposure. The approach is straightforward to perform with limited complications.

We report two cases of Kennedy's disease (muscle weakness, amyotrophy, intentional tremor, endocrine abnormalities, and denervation signs at electromyography). This entity must be differentiated from other motor neuron disorders by the genetic pattern (X-liked recessive), gynecomastia, testicular atrophy, oligospermia and good prognosis. A discussion about the clinical pattern and evolution is made.
