Fatigue in Primary Biliary Cirrhosis: Prevalence, Pathogenesis and Management.

Fatigue is a significant problem in approximately 50% of primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) patients, with 20% of all patients experiencing significant or life-altering fatigue. Large-scale population studies show that fatigue has a major impact on quality of life (QoL) in PBC, and that it disproportionately affects younger patients. The presence of social dysfunction that accompanies fatigue appears to be a major factor in determining whether fatigue of a particular severity impacts on QoL. The pathogenesis of fatigue in PBC remains unclear, although it is unrelated to the severity of underlying

Well-being fluctuations and injuries during an entire season in male professional soccer players: an observational study.

This study aimed to describe and relate the well-being perception and injury incidence of soccer players in an entire soccer season. For 37 weeks, twenty-eight male professional soccer players (25.2 ± 4.3 years old; 22.8 ± 1.4 kg/m2) daily scored (from 1: bad; to 5: perfect) well-being perception (fatigue, sleep, muscle soreness, stress and mood and Hooper Index (HI) as general status). Injuries were also registered. Results showed that players had the lowest well-being perception during Preseason (in terms of HI, fatigue, muscle soreness and stress), being lower than EarlySeason (ps < 0.05, d

A 60-year-old woman with weakness, fatigue, and acute respiratory failure: case report and discussion of the differential diagnosis.

A 60-year-old woman with chronic progressive fatigue, diurnal somnolence, proximal muscle weakness, and dyspnea developed acute respiratory failure when given supplemental oxygen. Hypoventilation secondary to neuromuscular dysfunction was suspected by the critical care specialist. Neurologic consultation and supportive laboratory evaluations led to the diagnosis of acid maltase deficiency, which was confirmed by muscle biopsy. The discussion includes a literature review that describes the pathophysiology and treatment of this rare muscle enzyme deficiency disorder. Acid maltase deficiency shou

Quadriceps and hamstrings fatigue alters hip and knee mechanics.

Neuromuscular fatigue exacerbates abnormal landing strategies, which may increase noncontact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury risk. The synergistic actions of quadriceps and hamstrings (QH) muscles are central to an upright landing posture, though the precise effect of simultaneous fatigue of these muscles on landing and ACL injury risk is unclear. Elucidating neuromechanical responses to QH fatigue thus appears important in developing more targeted fatigue-resistance intervention strategies. The current study thus aimed to examine the effects of QH fatigue on lower extremity neuromecha

Changes in lower extremity muscle coordination over a 30-minute walk do not differ by muscle fatigability.

Muscle fatigue, the transient decrease in muscle power, leads to low levels of physical activity and an inability to perform activities of daily living. Altered muscle coordination in response to fatigue may contribute to impaired physical performance. We sought to determine whether lower extremity muscle coordination during gait changes differently depending on susceptibility to fatigue (i.e., fatigability). Thirty-one older adults completed muscle power testing before and after a 30-min walk, with the change in power used to categorize participants as more or less fatigable. We used non-nega…

Dietary collagen peptides alleviate exercise-induced muscle soreness in healthy middle-aged males: a randomized double-blinded crossover clinical trial.

BACKGROUND: Post-exercise muscle soreness and fatigue can negatively affect exercise performance. Thus, it is desirable to attenuate muscle soreness and fatigue and promote recovery even for daily exercise habits aimed at maintaining or improving health. METHODS: This study investigated the effects of dietary collagen peptides (CPs) on post-exercise physical condition and fitness in healthy middle-aged adults unfamiliar with exercise. Middle-aged males (n = 20, 52.6 ± 5.8 years) received the active food (10 g of CPs per day) or the placebo food for 33 days in each period of the randomized cro

Blood pressure and heart rate responses during a fatiguing isometric exercise in paraplegic men with hypertension.

A group of 45 male subjects were examined in a cross-sectional study to compare the blood pressure response that occurs during isometric exercise maintained to fatigue among control subjects and paraplegic patients with (PH) and without essential hypertension (PN). Two muscle groups were examined: the handgrip muscles (voluntary effort) and the quadriceps muscles. The tension chosen for the contraction was 40% of the muscles maximum strength for both muscle groups. While the paraplegic groups had more strength in their handgrip muscles than that found for the controls, the control subjects had

Contribution of central and peripheral factors to residual fatigue in Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Many patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) suffer from severe residual fatigue that has an uncertain basis. We determined the relative contribution of peripheral and central factors during a 2-min fatiguing sustained maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) in 10 neurologically well-recovered GBS patients and 12 age- and sex-matched healthy controls. Physiological fatigue was defined as the decline of voluntary force during an MVC of the biceps brachii. Relative amounts of peripheral fatigue and central activation failure were determined combining voluntary force and force responses to electr
