Pathological findings in the red fox (Vulpes vulpes), stone marten (Martes foina) and raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides), with special emphasis on infectious and zoonotic agents in Northern Germany.

Anthropogenic landscape changes contributed to the reduction of availability of habitats to wild animals. Hence, the presence of wild terrestrial carnivores in urban and peri-urban sites has increased considerably over the years implying an increased risk of interspecies spillover of infectious diseases and the transmission of zoonoses. The present study provides a detailed characterisation of the health status of the red fox (Vulpes vulpes), stone marten (Martes foina) and raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) in their natural rural and peri-urban habitats in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany betw

Musculoskeletal, Pulmonary, and Cardiovascular COVID-19 Sequelae in the Context of Firefighter Occupational Health: A Narrative Review.

For most individuals infected with SARS-CoV-2, the acute illness resolves completely. However, for millions of people, symptoms or sequelae from COVID-19 recur or persist for months to years after infection. Post-COVID-19 sequelae are wide-ranging, often affecting the musculoskeletal, pulmonary, and cardiovascular systems. All who experience post-COVID-19 sequelae face significant challenges navigating home and work life. Occupations such as firefighting, however, are of particular concern given the strenuous nature of a job that relies on a healthy musculoskeletal, pulmonary, and cardiovascul

Musculoskeletal Failure.

Osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, and sarcopenia are prevalent musculoskeletal disorders that significantly impact the aging population's health and quality of life. Osteoarthritis, characterized by joint inflammation, leads to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Osteoporosis, a condition marked by bone density loss, increases fracture susceptibility, especially in postmenopausal women and older adults. Sarcopenia, the age-related loss of muscle mass and function, contributes to frailty and an increased risk of falls. Combined, osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and sarcopenia constitute "Musculoskel

Bone Health and Physical Activity - The Complex Mechanism.

This review summarizes the mechanism and role of physical activity in maintaining the proper functioning of the musculoskeletal system. Bone adaptation to the mechanical environment occurs in skeletal regions subjected to the greatest stresses resulting from the nature of exercise, however, there is a varied response of bone tissue to mechanical loads depending on its material and structural properties (trabecular and cortical). The regulation of bone tissue metabolism during physical exercise is influenced by factors associated with mechanical stress (gravitational forces, impact loading, and…

Tuberculosis revisted: classic imaging findings in childhood.

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the major public health threats worldwide, despite improved diagnostic and therapeutic methods. Tuberculosis is one of the main causes of infectious disease in the chest and is associated with substantial morbidity and mortality in paediatric populations, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Due to the difficulty in obtaining microbiological confirmation of pulmonary TB in children, diagnosis often relies on a combination of clinical and radiological findings. The early diagnosis of central nervous system TB is challenging with presumptive diagnosi

Options for Assessing Joints and Entheses in Psoriatic Arthritis by Ultrasonography and Magnetic Resonance Imaging: How to Move Forward.

Psoriatic arthritis (PsA) is a heterogeneous disease with various manifestations of musculoskeletal inflammation. Recent advances in imaging, including ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), allow for the accurate evaluation of the extent of inflammation and damage in the peripheral joints, spine, and entheses. The development and validation of outcome measures are critical steps in creating standardized evaluations of musculoskeletal inflammation and damage in psoriatic patients. At the 2017 meeting of the Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and PsA (GRAPPA), recent

Laboratory assessment in musculoskeletal disorders.

Autoimmune-mediated musculoskeletal disorders feature the presence and pathogenic role of circulating autoantibodies and autoreactive T cells. Determination of these autoantibodies provides crucial information to establish the diagnosis of these diseases. In addition, the determination of these antibodies may have prognostic value or may be used to monitor response to treatment or to predict relapse of disease. We first address the main characteristics of several autoantibody assays that are considered to be clinically most relevant. These include rheumatoid factor (RF), anti-cyclic citrullina

Computer-aided diagnosis in rheumatic diseases using ultrasound: an overview.

Clinical evaluation of rheumatic and musculoskeletal diseases through images is a challenge for the beginner rheumatologist since image diagnosis is an expert task with a long learning curve. The aim of this work was to present a narrative review on the main ultrasound computer-aided diagnosis systems that may help clinicians thanks to the progress made in the application of artificial intelligence techniques. We performed a literature review searching for original articles in seven repositories, from 1970 to 2019, and identified 11 main methods currently used in ultrasound computer-aided diag

Musculoskeletal Urgent Care Centers in Connecticut Restrict Patients with Medicaid Insurance Based on Policy and Location.

BACKGROUND: Musculoskeletal urgent care centers are a new development in the urgent care landscape. Anecdotally, these centers are known to screen patients based on their insurance status, denying care to those with Medicaid insurance. It is important to know whether the practice of denying musculoskeletal urgent care to patients with Medicaid insurance is widespread because this policy could exacerbate existing musculoskeletal healthcare disparities. QUESTIONS/PURPOSES: (1) Do musculoskeletal urgent care centers in Connecticut provide access for patients with Medicaid insurance? (2) Do muscu

Pediatric Knee Injury: A Unique Case of Intra-articular Osteochondral Fracture Following Penetrating Trauma.

Penetrating injuries to the musculoskeletal system pose common challenges for orthopedic surgeons in emergency departments (EDs). The complexity escalates when a joint is affected, increasing the risk of severe complications such as infection and post-traumatic arthritis. Given the potential importance of these injuries, early diagnosis and a meticulous treatment plan are crucial. In this paper, we present a unique case of penetrating trauma, resulting in an intra-articular defect on the lateral femoral condyle of an adolescent girl. This case underscores the importance of tailored interventio…

The musculoskeletal manifestations of haemophilia: a review of the imaging findings.

Haemophilia is a common hereditary cause of bleeding diathesis and the musculoskeletal system is frequently affected. Repeated episodes of haemarthrosis initiate a cascade towards haemophilic arthropathy, a disabling and deforming joint disease with both degenerative and inflammatory features, which include articular cartilage loss, bone erosions, and synovitis. Haemophilic pseudotumour and intra-muscular haematoma make up the remainder of the musculoskeletal manifestations of this systemic condition. Radiological assessment is vital in the assessment and follow-up of these haemophilic complic…

Integrating three-dimensional printing and nanotechnology for musculoskeletal regeneration.

The field of tissue engineering is advancing steadily, partly due to advancements in rapid prototyping technology. Even with increasing focus, successful complex tissue regeneration of vascularized bone, cartilage and the osteochondral interface remains largely illusive. This review examines current three-dimensional printing techniques and their application towards bone, cartilage and osteochondral regeneration. The importance of, and benefit to, nanomaterial integration is also highlighted with recent published examples. Early-stage successes and challenges of recent studies are discussed, w

Common musculoskeletal problems in the performing artist.

In this chapter we touched on a wide variety of unique musculoskeletal conditions in the musician and dancer. We outlined generalized methods of evaluation that stress the importance of the interdisciplinary approach in this highly specialized patient population and stressed the importance of specific involvement of the music or dance instructor in evaluation and management. We sought to emphasize the need to refer to specialized care early when in doubt of diagnosis or when usual first-line treatments fail. We gave examples of specific injury patterns common in these subgroups and suggestions
