Power and promise of narrative for advancing physical therapist education and practice.

This perspective article provides a justification for and an overview of the use of narrative as a pedagogical tool for educators to help physical therapist students, residents, and clinicians develop skills of reflection and reflexivity in clinical practice. The use of narratives is a pedagogical approach that provides a reflective and interpretive framework for analyzing and making sense of texts, stories, and other experiences within learning environments. This article describes reflection as a well-established method to support critical analysis of clinical experiences; to assist in uncove

Through the eyes of the wounded: a narrative analysis of children's sexual abuse experiences and recovery process.

Numerous children receive counseling for sexual abuse, yet their personal perspectives related to the abuse, the impact of making the disclosure, and the recovery process are noticeably absent from the scholarly literature. This study addressed this gap by analyzing trauma narratives written by children as part of a counseling intervention. Qualitative analysis revealed three themes: memories of the abuse, the disclosure and subsequent events, and the healing journey. Children's descriptions of their thoughts, feelings, and beliefs about their experiences are delineated and recommendations are

Narrative responses as an aid to understanding the presentation of maltreated children who meet criteria for autistic spectrum disorder and reactive attachment disorder: a case series study.

This paper offers research case studies of four severely maltreated children who had received a diagnosis of autistic spectrum disorder. A range of measures were employed to explore the children's psychological and emotional functioning, including Theory of Mind assessment (Sally-Anne Test), attachment measures (Story Stems Assessment Profile and Relationship Problems Questionnaire), along with measures to assess general psychological and emotional well-being. Contrary to the diagnosis, the children did not reveal a theory of mind deficit. However, they did indicate a profile of difficulties i

[Pedophilia].

This article deals with the incidence, diagnosis and treatment of pedophilia as a conceptualized mental disorder. Pedophilia is a category of sexual deviation characterized by a sexual interest toward children under 13 years according to DSM-IV-TR or children under 14 years as determined by the law. Pedophilia is a distinguished form of child sexual abuse as a legal category. Today pedophilia patients are stigmatized and excluded from society not only in general, but also in prisons and forensic units. However, the phenomenon of pedophilia originates from the disorder of emotional, cognitive,

The narratives of abused children who have survived attempted filicide.

Child abuse is a social problem that receives much attention from policy makers, practitioners, and researchers. This alarming phenomenon generates many consequences for children, their families, and society as a whole; one tragic consequence of child abuse is filicide. Because of the unfortunate circumstances surrounding such events, children are hushed by their perpetrators, whether abusers or killers, and we are thus denied the opportunity to hear their voices and to promote understanding of the phenomenon. The aim of the current study is to explore in depth the patterns and themes that can

Lexical category influences in Persian children who stutter.

This article explores the effect that words from different lexical categories have on disfluency in 12 Persian children, ten boys and two girls, who stutter. They were aged 7 years 5 months to 10 years 6 months. Words from the participants' narrative and reading samples (sub-tests of the Reading and Dyslexia Test validated for Persian school-aged children) were categorized as content, function, or content-function, and stuttering-like disfluencies were coded in each speech sample. Content and content-function words were significantly more likely to show stuttering-like disfluencies than functi

REM-dreams recall in patients with narcolepsy-cataplexy.

An abundant recall of dreams has been observed in clinical studies on patients with narcolepsy-cataplexy (NC), a neurological disorder characterized by an altered sleep architecture. Laboratory studies have shown that dream experiences developed during 1st-rapid eye movement (REM) sleep by NC patients are longer and more complex than those of healthy subjects. To establish whether these features indicate an earlier optimal functioning of the cognitive processes involved in dream generation rather than a more accurate dream recall, we compared the indicators of length and structural organizatio

Narrative discourse in adults with high-functioning autism or Asperger syndrome.

We report a study comparing the narrative abilities of 12 adults with high-functioning autism (HFA) or Asperger Syndrome (AS) versus 12 matched controls. The study focuses on the use of referential expressions (temporal expressions and anaphoric pronouns) during a story-telling task. The aim was to assess pragmatics skills in people with HFA/AS in whom linguistic impairments are more subtle than in classic autism. We predicted no significant differences in general narrative abilities between the two groups, but specific pragmatic deficits in people with AS. We predicted they use fewer personal

Working with dreams in a clinical setting.

A disturbed sleep pattern, nightmares, and anxiety-filled dreams form a cluster of symptoms belonging to the DSM- IV diagnosis of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder. A psychotherapeutic group approach aimed at reducing these symptoms was undertaken in the form of a workshop. The workshop was not a regular part of the treatment program, but an experimental endeavor, offered to the patients during special occasions in the year (around holidays). The therapist was primarily interested in investigating possibilities for improving the quality of sleep and influencing the patterns of recurring anxiety-f

Dissociation in children's trauma narratives: an exploratory investigation.

This research examined the nature of children's trauma narrative themes and the relationship between these themes and concurrent and future trauma symptoms. Eighty-seven children aged 7-15 years, and their parents, participated following child exposure to a traumatic event requiring hospitalization. At 4-7 weeks post-trauma, a diagnostic interview was conducted with parents and a trauma narrative was obtained from the child. At 6 months post-trauma the diagnostic interview was re-conducted. Results provided only weak evidence of an association between dissociative trauma narrative themes and P

Eye movements reflect thought patterns while listening to literary narratives.

While listening toan audiobook, listeners' attention may shift between the text and self-generated thoughts occurring during mind-wandering. Despite the growing use of audiobooks, little is known about how listeners process text when listening to it. The present study investigated the types of thought patterns that listeners have while listening to an audiobook, and whether and how these are reflected in eye movements. Participants (NStudy1 = 63, NStudy2 = 58) listened to an audio recording of a novel and responded to a 13-item mind-wandering questionnaire and a simple memory question 30 times

Poetry and well-being: a pilot programme to evaluate the impact of creative writing for patients in short-term and long-term rehabilitation.

The value of creative writing as an adjunct to clinical treatment is well-known. Creative writing has been used successfully in a wide range of healthcare and rehabilitation settings, with people suffering from aphasia, dementia, cancer, heart attacks, depression, mental illness, post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety disorders, and dealing with pain. Poetry, in particular, has been identified as a powerful reflective tool. This project aimed to: facilitate the creation of a safe space in which participants can enjoy open discussion of written works, share readings and offer feedback; give

In many voices: exploring end-of-life care through patient, caregiver and physician narratives.

As the focus on end-of-life care intensifies, so too does the need to better understand the experiences of patients, caregivers and physicians. Delivering empathetic care requires a shared understanding of illness and its meaning and impact. The narratives of patients, caregivers and physicians each offer a distinct perspective on clinical experiences, yet comparative research is uncommon. This study compares written narratives about end-of-life illness and care by these groups. We created an archive of 332 first-person written narratives about end of life (patient=65, caregiver=156, physician=

Drug-free nation: Reconstructing the 'official drug narratives' in Singapore and the Philippines.

BACKGROUND: This paper reconstructs and analyses the "official drug narratives" in Singapore and the Philippines as recounted by its drug enforcement agencies and government officials. Drawing inspiration from narrative analyses and works that have explored official and institutional narratives, it defines such narratives as government accounts of how drugs figured in its country's history and how it responded to the challenges posed by drugs to society. It then identifies common elements in these narratives, namely plot, settings, characters, and moral of the story. METHODS: Documents and ot

'I don't know if there's a happy ending to this story': An analysis of prostate cancer narratives in a follow-up setting.

Prostate cancer, the most common cancer among Finnish men, has a high survival rate. Treatment options vary from active surveillance to radical treatments, with potential long-term or permanent side effects. Traditional cancer narratives frame cancer as a tragedy or a hero story and thus fail to capture the chronic nature of prostate cancer and its impacts on patients' lives. This study analyses the narratives of 22 prostate cancer patients, interviewed twice (1 and 3 years after diagnosis). We found two recurring storylines of prostate cancer narratives, one from radically treated men and the
