OBJECTIVES: (1) Present a unique case of partial necrosis of the dorsal tongue caused by an endotracheal tube; (2) highlight the importance of verifying proper endotracheal tube positioning during cases requiring prolonged intubation.

There is no consensus on the optimal antiviral regimen in the management of acute retinal necrosis, a disease caused by herpetic viruses with devastating consequences for the eye. The current gold standard is based on retrospective case series. Because the incidence of disease is low, few well-designed, randomized trials have evaluated treatment dosage and duration. Avascular bone necrosis under immunosuppressive therapy is a well known sequel following solid organ transplantation. Most cases affect hip, knees or shoulders in more than one location and occur in connection with the use of high-dose steroids. Femoral head deformity with flattening and lateral protrusion can occur secondary to epiphyseal dysplasia or avascular necrosis of any aetiology in childhood. This deformity causes painful impingement of the lateral femoral head on the acetabular lip, a phenomenon known as hinge abduction. Twenty patients undergoing valgus osteotomy for hinge abduction were clinically and radiologically reviewed. Chronic otitis media is often associated with ossicular defects, the most frequent being necrosis of the long process of incus. Except for infection and cholesteatoma; trauma and local pressure by chorda tympani are uncommon causes leading to incus erosion. In the literature, no case of incus necrosis has been reported associated with type II diabetes mellitus (DM). A patient is presented in this report with incus and stapes suprastructure necrosis and associated type II DM who was admitted to the out-patient clinic with complaints of conductive hearing loss.
