Fibroids are benign neoplasms of myometrial smooth muscle cells (SMC). Despite being the most common tumor in humans, their etiology is poorly understood. Recent microarray studies have demonstrated that multiple members of the retinoid pathway are differentially expressed between myometrium and fibroids. The aim of this present study was to investigate gene expression of members of the retinoid pathway in matched myometrium and fibroids. We have demonstrated differential gene expression of two binding proteins [cellular retinol-binding proteins (CRBP) 1 and 2], three enzymes [alcohol dehydrog

There is controversy regarding whether lymphatic vessels are present or absent in bone. Although lymphangiomas have been described in bone, lymphatic vessels have not been identified morphologically with certainty in any other benign or malignant bone tumors or in normal human bone. In this study, we determined by immunohistochemistry, using 2 specific lymphatic endothelial cell markers, LYVE-1 and podoplanin, whether lymphatics are present in normal bone and a wide range of primary and secondary bone neoplasms. In normal bone, LYVE-1+/podoplanin+ lymphatic vessels were not identified in corti

BACKGROUND: Mesenchymal hamartoma (MH) of the liver constitutes the third or fourth most common tumor of the liver in childhood and occurs most commonly in the first two years of life. MHs of the liver are seldom aspirated, and reports on the role of fine needle aspiration (FNA) in the diagnosis of MH are scarce. Clinically, cytologically and even histologically, MH can be mistaken for a number of reactive and neoplastic hepatic lesions that may occur in children under 2 years of age.
CASE: A 10-month-old Pakistani female presented with a history of a right-sided, nonpainful abdominal swellin

Myxoid and round cell liposarcomas constitute approximately one-third of all liposarcomas, a relatively common group of fat-derived soft tissue sarcomas. The histomorphology is a continuum between highly differentiated myxoid and poorly differentiated round cell components. The gold standard of diagnosis is dependent on histomorphology and/or identification of t(12;16)(q13;p11) translocation by cytogenetics or demonstration of DDIT3 rearrangements by fluorescence in situ hybridization. There are currently no diagnostic immunohistochemical stains available. The broad range of myxoid neoplasms i

We report the case of a 56-year-old female patient with a giant tumor on the left side of the neck, which appeared to be localised outside the large salivary glands. Due to the extensive vascularisation seen on MRI, digital subtraction angiography was performed. To reduce intraoperative bleeding, the vasculature was embolized. The tumor was resected together with the submandibular gland, since a connection between gland and tumor could not be excluded intraoperatively. Histology showed a pleomorphic adenoma with an intact capsule and no indication of malignancy. Pleomorphic adenomas are typica

Non-metastatic melanoma glycoprotein B (Gpnmb), a type I transmembrane glycoprotein, was first cloned and described in low-metastatic human melanoma and xenografts in 1995. Up to now a growing number of studies have confirmed that Gpnmb is expressed not only in numerous normal tissues but also at pathological sites and malignant tissues and often connected with the invasive and metastatic phenotypes, including breast cancer. Nowadays, immunotherapeutic approaches for cancer therapy, by which monoclonal antibodies (Mabs) target tumor specific antigens, have shown great potential. Glembatumumabv

Sarcomas of the retroperitoneum represent 0.2% of tumors and 15% of soft tissue sarcomas. Retro-peritoneal differentiated liposarcoma must be distinguished from the connective neoplasm of kidney. The main features of these tumors are: the rapid growth, infiltration of surrounding tissue, the tendency to local relapse and very fast metastasis (60-80%). Authors report a clinical case of a patient 61 old years with occasional reflected ultrasound is performed for lumbar pain a retro peritoneal mass. CT described a retro peritoneal mass that raised medially and displaced the left kidney. The patie

Various salient histological features were rated from + to +++ in a semiquantitative evaluation of a series of 155 cases of fibrous histiocytoma. Relations between individual histological features, as well as between histological findings, localisation and size of lesions, and age or sex of the patient were tested statistically. Most impressive was an inverse proportional relationship between cellular and fibrillar densities: highly cellular fibrous histiocytomas chiefly showed little fiber formation. Accordingly, cases with marked fiber formation were distinguished by low cellularity. Based o

Neoplastic diffusion can occur due to dissemination, continuity, through lymphatic or haematic vessels, or, more rarely originate from surgical instruments. We report a particular case of prostate cancer spread. A 64-year-old man was diagnosed with undifferentiated prostate cancer through prostate biopsy. The patient was treated with a total androgenic block allowing a decrease in PSA blood level. The patient, wishing to regain his sexual activity compromised by hormonal therapy, interrupted the treatment spontaneously and unchecked. 19 months later he contacted us again: we had to hospitalize

We present a further case of a rare mesenchymal neoplasm termed phosphaturic mesenchymal tumor (mixed connective tissue variant). The patient was a 42-year-old man with a long history of osteomalacia of unknown etiology with pathological bone fracture, abnormality of parathyroid glands, kyphosis, scoliosis, and spondylosis. Laboratory investigation disclosed hypophosphatemia, elevated serum alkaline phosphatase activity, and normal serum calcium level. The patient had a soft tissue mass in the right inguinal area, measuring 11 x 6 x 5 cm, which was previously interpreted as a calcified hematom

A uterus-like mass is an extrauterine mass with a cavity lined by endometrial tissue and a smooth muscle layer resembling the uterine corpus. It is a rare condition of unknown histogenesis. Herein, we describe a case of clear cell carcinoma arising from a uterus-like mass located in the retroperitoneal space. The patient, a 67-year old nulliparous woman, had been followed with the diagnosis of an ovarian endometriotic cyst for 14 years until ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated an enlargement of the cystic mass with a thickened irregular wall. Desmoid tumor (DT) or aggressive fibromatosis is a histologically benign-appearing neoplasms of the soft tissues, arising from connective tissues, the fascial sheaths and musculoaponevrotic structures of muscles. DT is a non-metastasizing tumor but has a potential for local invasion and local recurrence. DT can be seen in all age groups including young children. The overall incidence is reported as 2-4 cases per million per year. The etiology of DT is unknown. However, a genetic predisposition, familial adenomatous polyposis and Gardner's syndrome, has been implicated in 2% of the cases. The h

Leiomyoma, the most common uterine neoplasm, is composed of smooth muscle with varying amounts of fibrous connective tissue. Most leiomyomas are asymptomatic, but patients may present with abnormal uterine bleeding or bulk-related symptoms. Over the past decade, uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) has been an effective minimally invasive treatment for symptomatic patients. Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is the most accurate imaging technique for detection and evaluation of leiomyomas and therefore has become the imaging modality of choice before and after UFE. As leiomyomas enlarge, they may o

The classical BCR::ABL1-negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) form a group of bone marrow (BM) diseases with the potential to progress to acute myeloid leukemia or develop marrow fibrosis and subsequent BM failure. The mechanism by which BM fibrosis develops and the factors that drive stromal activation and fibrosis are not well understood. Cellular Communication Network 2 (CCN2), also known as CTGF (Connective Tissue Growth Factor), is a profibrotic matricellular protein functioning as an important driver and biomarker of fibrosis in a wide range of diseases outside the marrow. CCN2 can

Oral and maxillofacial lesions (OMFLs) in pediatrics differ markedly from their adult counterparts in terms of clinical conduct, pathological behavior, and management. This study aims to determine the frequency of OMFLs among pediatric and adolescent patients and to correlate the demographics information to the site, and histopathological findings. Pathological records of pediatric and adolescent patients were retrieved from three major pathological centers in Sulaimani city of Iraq. Demographic information, surgical procedure, anatomical sites, and histopathological diagnosis were recorded. F

OBJECTIVE: To quantify the risk of incident cancer and cancer-related mortality in Australian Government Department of Veterans' Affairs (DVA) clients.
METHODS: A population-based record linkage study of 75,482 adult clients residing in New South Wales (NSW) from 2000 to 2007; median age 75 years (interquartile range, 68-79); 57% male. Standardised incidence ratios (SIRs) and mortality ratios (SMRs) for any cancer and by cancer type were calculated, relative to the NSW population.
RESULTS: The risk of any cancer was slightly increased for males (SIR 1.07, 95%CI 1.04-1.10) but not females (SI
