A 60-year-old man was hospitalized because of multiple bilateral renal stones and macrohematuria. The right kidney was not functioning, and the left kidney showed marked hydronephrosis. Left renal stones were treated by percutaneous nephrolithotomy. Several months later, squamous cell carcinoma of the treated renal pelvis was diagnosed. Although the patient was treated by chemotherapy and radiotherapy, he died of renal failure.

Percutaneous removal of renal stones (percutaneous nephrolithotomy) is becoming an established procedure, especially for stones lying free in the renal pelvis. However, some renal stones, particularly caliceal stones, are less accessible and, therefore, more difficult by the percutaneous route. We removed percutaneously 95 caliceal or otherwise poorly accessible renal stones from 53 patients with a variety of techniques, including percutaneous puncture above the 12th rib, double or Y percutaneous nephrostomy tracts, rigid and flexible endoscopy, and intrarenal cutting with diathermy. Intraveno

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the minimally invasive percutaneous nephrolithotomy (MIP) system for renal calculi.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Consecutive patients undergoing mini-percutaneous nephrolithotomy (mPCNL) procedures with the MIP system were enrolled. Patient position, American Society of Anesthesiologists classification, puncture location, stone clearance, postoperative drainage and complications were recorded, and features unique to MIP were noted.
RESULTS: In all, 30 patients underwent 32 mPCNL procedures. The mean stone size was 17 (10.75-21.25) mm and the mean number of stones was 1 (1-2).

Intrarenal foreign bodies are rare and could be iatrogenic through direct penetration, penetration through the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), or retrograde migration from the lower urinary tract. We present Intraoperatively incidental findings of an intrarenal foreign body during percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) with no previous urological intervention. However, there is a significant multiple percutaneous liver abscess drainage and endoscopic procedures. This case report of a pigtail thread rupture, likely resulting from recent hepatic abscess drainage. In conclusion, Intrarenal foreign bod

A percutaneous method was used to remove stones from otherwise normal gall bladders, as assessed by cholecystography and ultrasonography. The procedure was performed in a single stage under general anaesthesia, adopting the method and instruments used for one stage percutaneous nephrolithotomy. A Foley catheter was left in the gall bladder and the system checked with contrast at 10 days to ensure free drainage and exclude residual calculi. Seven out of eight patients had a successful percutaneous cholecystolithotomy. An adequate track could not be secured in one man; he had an uneventful chole

The diagnosis of non-opaque calculi can be difficult. In 4 patients with protracted symptoms, 2 had renal pelvic filling defects, 1 a possible filling defect and 1 complete obstruction of the ureter at L4. Non-opaque calculi were readily diagnosed by CT scanning. Three patients have successfully undergone surgery (2 open, 1 percutaneous) and 1 awaits percutaneous nephrolithotomy. Of two stones available for analysis, one was composed of uric acid and the other calcium and phosphate. We recommend CT scanning as the investigation of choice for unexplained filling defects in the renal pelvis and

PURPOSE: Kidney stone disease affects 5% of the population and is associated with non-negligible morbidity. Retrograde intrarenal surgery and percutaneous nephrolithotomy are the treatments of choice. We analyzed the results from our patients who underwent retrograde intrarenal surgery at controlled pressure.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted an observational, descriptive, retrospective study of 403 patients who underwent retrograde intrarenal surgery at the Hospital Clínico Universitario Lozano Blesa (Zaragoza, Spain) between January 2013 and December 2019.
RESULTS: The mean surgical time

Laparoscopic techniques may be considered for the uncommon patient in whom open stone surgery is considered. Stones in caliceal diverticula not accessible percutaneously may be approached transperitoneally. Pelvic stones in ectopic kidneys can be retrieved laparoscopically through a pyelotomy created with scissors or a knife. Percutaneous nephrolithotomy under laparoscopic guidance can be used if the stone extends beyond the renal pelvis. In the patient with difficult stone disease, laparoscopy does not replace other minimally invasive techniques but rather complements them. It should be the r

Introduction. Open surgical anatrophic nephrolithotomy (ANL) had been the standard treatment for large renal calculi prior to the development of endoscopic devices and endoscopic techniques. A previous report described the efficacy of ureteroscopy-assisted retrograde nephrostomy (UARN) and presented a case of renal calculi successfully treated with UARN during percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in a patient after ANL. Case Presentation. A 61-year-old male with left renal calculi was referred for further treatment. The patient was placed under general and epidural anesthesia, in a Galdakao-mod

BACKGROUND: The comparative efficacy and safety of minipercutaneous nephrolithotomy (mPCNL) versus standard percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) in selected patients with renal stones ≤ 2 cm remain insufficiently defined.
METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 146 adult patients with single renal stones ≤ 2 cm who underwent PCNL between May 2023 and May 2025. The patients were assigned to the mPCNL group (≤14 Fr, n = 72) or standard PCNL group (22-24 Fr, n = 74). All procedures were performed using holmium: Yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG) laser lithotripsy. The primary outcome was the

PURPOSE: While advances in flexible ureteroscopes and disposable suction systems have led to questions about percutaneous nephrolithotomy’s (PCNL) role in stone management, these alternatives are often insufficient for complex cases. This review examines PCNL’s efficacy and safety in four difficult patient groups: those with urinary diversion, neuromuscular disorders, renal transplants, and congenital anomalies where less invasive modalities, including flexible ureteroscopy and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL), are often insufficient. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted acco

Double-J (DJ) stents are most commonly used urological tools these days. Serious complications may occur when stents are left in place for longer duration. We present a case of a woman in her 40s with a forgotten DJ stent for 4 years, leading to complications such as encrustations, bladder and renal stone formation. The patient underwent a comprehensive endourological approach, including endoscopic cystolithotomy and left-sided percutaneous nephrolithotomy. The case highlights the importance of timely stent removal to prevent complications such as encrustations and stone formation. Patient edu

INTRODUCTION: The use of modern information technologies allows to increase confidence in the choice of a surgical treatment method of kidney stones, as well as to improve the quality of treatment due to an adequate combination of therapeutic techniques.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In our study we analyzed the treatment results of 625 patients with kidney stones. We created a register with the information on more than 50 parameters for each patient. Each example had an output parameter representing a predefined treatment strategy (extracorporeal shock-wave lithotripsy [ESWL]-1, percutaneous nephro

OBJECTIVE: To identify the differences in radiation exposure per suspected stone episode between percutaneous nephrostomy tube (PCN), stent, and primary ureteroscopy (URS).The incidence of nephrolithiasis in pregnancy is low; however, repercussions for both mother and fetus can be significant. In cases of suspected obstructing nephrolithiasis, intervention may be required, including ureteral stent, PCN, or URS, with the potential for multiple subsequent procedures that often utilize fluoroscopy.
METHODS: Pregnant patients who required an intervention (stent, PCN, or URS) for suspected obstruc

Erdheim-Chester disease (ECD) is a rare systemic histiocytosis with urologic manifestations in a majority of affected patients. An important manifestation is a pronounced retroperitoneal fibrosis with reported dense inflammatory rind surrounding the kidneys. We report a case of a patient with large stone burden necessitating percutaneous nephrolithotomy and the implications related to his Erdheim-Chester-related retroperitoneal fibrotic changes. Foreknowledge of these implications may inform perioperative counseling and surgical planning to maximize opportunity for successful outcomes.

INTRODUCTION: Ureteroscopy (URS) and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) are common procedures performed to treat kidney stones. Despite advances in technology/technique, serious infectious complications can occur. To better understand the preoperative antibiotic administration patterns and adherence to guidelines from the American Urological Association (AUA) and the European Association of Urology (EAU), members of the Endourological Society were sent a clinical vignette-based survey to assess the antibiotic use in a variety of pre-URS and pre-PCNL scenarios.
METHODS: Endourological Society

In 18 patients (20 kidneys) with struvite/apatite-, uric acid- and cystine stones antegrade local chemolysis was performed via percutaneous or operative nephrostomy. Complete stone dissolution was achieved in 11 kidneys, while in six kidneys partial dissolution of stones was performed. In these six cases added instrumental manipulations shortened the time of therapy. In three cases chemolysis was unsuccessful. Average irrigation time was 21 days per renal unit. Only minor complications like dysuria and skin rashes were seen. Due to long time of irrigation we recommend chemolitholysis mainly as
