Cup and Disc Segmentation in Smartphone Handheld Ophthalmoscope Images with a Composite Backbone and Double Decoder Architecture.

Glaucoma is a visual disease that affects millions of people, and early diagnosis can prevent total blindness. One way to diagnose the disease is through fundus image examination, which analyzes the optic disc and cup structures. However, screening programs in primary care are costly and unfeasible. Neural network models have been used to segment optic nerve structures, assisting physicians in this task and reducing fatigue. This work presents a methodology to enhance morphological biomarkers of the optic disc and cup in images obtained by a smartphone coupled to an ophthalmoscope through a de

Deep Bayesian baseline for segmenting diabetic retinopathy lesions: Advances and challenges.

Early diagnosis of retinopathy is essential for preventing retinal complications and visual impairment due to diabetes. For the detection of retinopathy lesions from retinal images, several automatic approaches based on deep neural networks have been developed in the recent years. Most of the proposed methods produce point estimates of pixels belonging to the lesion areas and give no or little information on the uncertainty of method predictions. However, the latter can be essential in the examination of the medical condition of the patient when the goal is early detection of abnormalities. Th

Imbalance between firing homeostasis and synaptic plasticity drives early-phase Alzheimer's disease.

During recent years, the preclinical stage of Alzheimer's disease (AD) has become a major focus of research. Continued failures in clinical trials and the realization that early intervention may offer better therapeutic outcome triggered a conceptual shift from late-stage AD pathology to early-stage pathophysiology. While much effort has been directed at understanding the factors initiating AD, little is known about the principle basis underlying the disease progression at its early stages. In this Perspective, we suggest a hypothesis to explain the transition from 'silent' signatures of aberr

Sex differences in social perception in children with ASD.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is more common in males than females. An underrepresentation of females in the ASD literature has led to limited knowledge of differences in social function across the sexes. Investigations of face perception represent a promising target for understanding variability in social functioning between males and females. The current study analyzed electrophysiological brain recordings during face perception to investigate sex differences in the neural correlates of face perception and their relationship to social function. Event related potentials (ERP) were recorded f

[Antioxidant use as dietary therapy in patients with multiple sclerosis].

INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis is an immune-mediated disease that produces chronic inflammation and neural degeneration. The disease progresses with acute attacks that result in myelin inflammation. This in turn increases oxidative stress and favors the appearance of reactive oxygen species. Reactive oxygen species damage neural cells causing apoptosis. The etiology of multiple sclerosis remains unknown and current therapy is aggressive and expensive. Recently, complementary and alternative medicine therapies have been proposed to control pathogenesis and symptoms of this disease. It is beli

Brain temperature fluctuations during physiological and pathological conditions.

This review discusses brain temperature as a physiological parameter, which is determined primarily by neural metabolism, regulated by cerebral blood flow, and affected by various environmental factors and drugs. First, we consider normal fluctuations in brain temperature that are induced by salient environmental stimuli and occur during motivated behavior at stable normothermic conditions. Second, we analyze changes in brain temperature induced by various drugs that affect brain and body metabolism and heat dissipation. Third, we consider how these physiological and drug-induced changes in br

Embryology of neural tube defects: information provided by associated malformations.

OBJECTIVES: To get information about embryologic mechanisms of neural tube defects (NTD), by studying the associated malformations. METHODS: Eighty three cases of NTD, seen at the prenatal diagnosis unit of Rennes University Hospital (France) between May 1999 and December 2002, were retrospectively studied. Cases with chromosomal anomalies (5/83), cases without available karyotype or pathologic examination were excluded. 24 spina bifida, and 27 cephalic forms (anencephalies, exencephalies, and encephaloceles) were thus analyzed. RESULTS: Only 22/51 cases (43%) were strictly isolated NTD. Ano

Loss-of-function mutations in SIP1 Smad interacting protein 1 result in a syndromic Hirschsprung disease.

Hirschsprung disease (HD) has been described in association with microcephaly, mental retardation and characteristic facial features, delineating a syndrome possibly caused by mutations localized at chromosome 2q22--q23. We have analyzed a de novo translocation breakpoint at 2q22 in one patient presenting with this syndrome, and identified a gene, SIP1, which is disrupted by this chromosomal rearrangement. SIP1 encodes Smad interacting protein 1, a new member of the delta EF1/Zfh-1 family of two-handed zinc finger/homeodomain transcription factors. We determined the genomic structure and expre

Optical and neural resolution in peripheral vision.

Visual acuity along the horizontal meridian in the peripheral field of vision was determined at a photopic level in two normal subjects. Two types of sinusoidally modulated, monochromatic test patterns of high contrast were used. One was produced directly on the retina by an interferometric technique. The other type was imaged on the retina by the dioptric apparatus of the eye; the resulting image suffered ordinary optical image degradation. The results from the interferometric acuity determinations represent maximal neural discrimination across the visual field. Acuity decreases monotonically

EEG correlates of action observation in humans.

To investigate electrophysiological correlates of action observation electroencephalogram (EEG) was recorded while participants observed repetitive biological (human) or non-biological movements (at a rate of 2 Hz). Steady-state evoked potentials were analyzed and their neural sources were investigated using low resolution electromagnetic tomography analysis (LORETA). Results revealed significantly higher activation in the primary motor and premotor cortex, supplementary motor area as well as the posterior parietal cortices during observation of biological movements, supporting mirror properti

Age-related neural inefficiency: fNIRS evidence of prefrontal hyperactivation during emotional response inhibition.

Older adults often exhibit reduced inhibitory control accompanied by altered recruitment of prefrontal networks. Whether the emotional context changes these age-related neural patterns during response inhibition remains unclear. In this study, 31 older adults and 19 young adults completed four blocks of a Go/No-Go paradigm while bilateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity was recorded using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Blocks 1 and 2 comprised a neutral (non-emotional) Go/No-Go task using geometric shapes, while blocks 3 and 4 comprised an emotional Go/No-Go task using facial

Cochlear Neural Degeneration Is Widespread in Ménière's Disease: A Temporal Bone Study.

PURPOSE: Ménière's disease presents with endolymphatic hydrops and disproportionately poor word-recognition compared to other forms of sensorineural hearing loss, yet the underlying patterns of cochlear degeneration are not well defined. This study aimed to characterize cochlear pathology in Ménières, compare it to age-matched controls and clinically unaffected contralateral ears, and evaluate how hydrops severity and clinical endotypes relate to tissue degeneration. METHODS: We analyzed 97 human cochleas, including 43 Ménière's ears, 10 contralateral (clinically unaffected) ears, and 44 age-

The double-edged sword effect of adverse childhood experiences forging adult stress into depression and anxiety.

Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are a high risk factor for depression and anxiety in adulthood and are associated with the alterations in the hypothalamic‒pituitary‒adrenal (HPA) axis and monoamine neurotransmitters. This study aimed to elucidate the behavioral, neuroendocrine, and neural circuit mechanisms underlying the impact of ACEs effect on adult second-hit stress. We employed a "two-hit" mouse model that combines maternal separation (MS) with restraint stress (RS). To investigate the potential pathological effects of ACEs on depressive- and anxiety-like behaviors in second-hit mode

Atypical alpha oscillatory EEG dynamics in children with Angelman syndrome.

OBJECTIVES: Biomarkers of atypical brain development are crucial for advancing clinical trials and guiding therapeutic interventions in Angelman syndrome (AS). Electroencephalography (EEG) captures well-characterized developmental changes in peak alpha frequency (PAF) that reflect underlying neural circuit maturation and may provide a sensitive metric for mapping atypical neural trajectories in AS. METHOD: We analyzed 159 EEG recordings from 95 children with AS (ages 1-15 years) and 185 age-matched typically developing (TD) controls. PAF was quantified using a well-established curve-fitting m

A cocktail hydrogel promoting the functional interneurons regeneration of human neural progenitor cells for brain injury therapy.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) usually leads to substantial mortality and disability among adult populations. Neural progenitor cells (NPCs) transplantation exhibits great potential in TBI treatment. However, the differentiation rate of interneurons is relatively low, largely impeding the therapeutic effects of brain tissue repair. OBJECTIVES: A cocktail hydrogel (BGA@GelMA) was developed to provide a sustained release of neurotrophic factors and neural signaling molecules, thereby promoting the maturation of cortical interneurons, which can be utilized to improve the therapeutic

Computational modeling of dorsal root ganglion stimulation using an Injectrode.

Objective.Minimally invasive neuromodulation therapies like the Injectrode, which is composed of a tightly wound polymer-coated Platinum/Iridium microcoil, offer a low-risk approach for administering electrical stimulation to the dorsal root ganglion (DRG). This flexible electrode is aimed to conform to the DRG. The stimulation occurs through a transcutaneous electrical stimulation (TES) patch, which subsequently transmits the stimulation to the Injectrode via a subcutaneous metal collector. However, it is important to note that the effectiveness of stimulation through TES relies on the specif

Biomechanical comparison of two surgical methods for Hallux Valgus deformity: Exploring the use of artificial neural networks as a decision-making tool for orthopedists.

Hallux Valgus foot deformity affects gait performance. Common treatment options include distal oblique metatarsal osteotomy and chevron osteotomy. Nonetheless, the current process of selecting the appropriate osteotomy method poses potential biases and risks, due to its reliance on subjective human judgment and interpretation. The inherent variability among clinicians, the potential influence of individual clinical experiences, or inherent measurement limitations may contribute to inconsistent evaluations. To address this, incorporating objective tools like neural networks, renowned for effect
