The near-nerve sensory nerve conduction in tarsal tunnel syndrome.

The near-nerve sensory nerve conduction in the medial and lateral plantar nerves was studied in 25 cases of tarsal tunnel syndrome. Sensory nerve conduction was abnormal in 24 cases (96%) The most common abnormalities were slow nerve conduction velocities and dispersion phenomenon (prolonged duration of compound nerve action potentials). These two electrophysiological abnormalities are indicative of a focal segmental demyelination as the primary pathological process in tarsal tunnel syndrome.

Mononeuropathy multiplex (AAEE case report #11).

Mononeuropathy multiplex is a syndrome of diverse causes, the most common of which is nerve ischemia due to microangiopathy associated with diabetes or the collagen-vascular diseases. The acquired inflammatory demyelinating neuropathies invariably are multifocal, although the clinical manifestations of these and other multifocal neuropathies may appear symmetrical. The identification of multifocal neuropathies is important because of the frequent therapeutic implications. A case of mononeuropathy multiplex associated with polyarteritis nodosa is described.

[Value of the study of trigeminal nerve evoked potentials in chronic trichloroethylene poisoning. Preliminary results].

Results of a study concerning the trigeminal nerve impairment as the one caused by trichlorethylene chronic intoxication by somatosensory evoked potential reveal three kinds of anomalies: increase of the stimulation voltage, excessive latency delay with morphological anomalies and excessive graph amplitude. These anomalies confirm clinical disturbance (hypoesthesia in the trigeminal area) and open a debate about the real mechanism of the trichlorethylene neurotoxicity.

Origin of somatosensory evoked responses recorded from the cervical skin surface.

Somatosensory evoked response from the cervical skin surface over the spine (the cervical SER) was recorded, and compared with the cord dorsum potential (CDP) simultaneously recorded from the posterior epidural space at the same segment. The cervical SER evoked by segmental nerve stimulation consisted of an initially positive spike (P1), the peak latency being the same as that of the P1 of the CDP, followed by a smaller negative wave with two peaks. The latency of the second peak of the negative wave (N1) coincided with that of the N1 of the CDP. Subsequent to this negative wave, a slow positi

Type C botulism in American Foxhounds.

Diffuse lower motor neuron dysfunction developed in a group of American Foxhounds while they were hunting. Of 19 dogs, 10 became weak and 9 became quadriplegic. Three of the quadriplegic dogs died before treatment could be instituted. The remaining quadriplegic dogs recovered after being given supportive treatment, with (4 dogs) or without (2 dogs) trivalent (types A, B, E) botulinal antitoxin. The 10 dogs that were weak recovered without treatment. A markedly decreased amplitude of evoked potentials and increased chronaxy were found by electromyographic examination of 2 of the quadriplegic do

Electrodiagnostic study in delayed facial palsy after closed head injury.

The time course of electrical reactions in this condition varied much from that after section of the facial nerve or after Bell's palsy. It was at least a week before denervation could be suspected in the latter conditions by electrodiagnostic methods. In post-traumatic delayed facial palsy we have demonstrated electrical reactions showing denervation at the time of palsy or even a few days before, and this is probably related to its pathogenesis. Denervation occurred in 82% of cases which is about double the incidence in Bell's palsy.

Polymyositis and polyarthritis associated with systemic lupus erythematosus in a dog.

Systemic lupus erythematosus with polymyositis and polyarthritis was diagnosed in a 7-year-old female Standard Poodle. Pertinent clinical signs included extreme muscular weakness, muscle wasting, atrial fibrillation, and dysphagia due to megaesophagus. Aspiration pneumonia secondary to the megaesophagus contributed to the death of the dog. Serum muscle enzyme activities were increased. Electromyographic findings included fibrillation potentials, positive sharp waves, increased insertional activity, and bizarre high-frequency repetitive potentials. Histopathologic findings in skeletal muscle in

Normal abomasal electromyography and emptying in sheep and the effects of intraabomasal volatile fatty acid infusion.

Electromyographic activity and emptying of the abomasum were studied in 3 sheep. Pacesetter potentials (PP), with a frequency of 6.06 +/- 0.05 (X +/- SEM) cycles/minute and propagated distally with an increased conduction velocity approaching the pylorus, were recorded from the distal 11 cm of the antrum. Spike burst and fused action potentials (AP) were superimposed on a variable percentage of PP. The aborad propagation of both types of AP was associated with abomasal emptying at the net rate of 12.61 +/- 1.38 (X +/- SEM) ml/minute. Intraabomasal infusion of 50 ml of a 300 mM solution of eith

The Effects of Fasinumab on Peripheral Nerve Function and Ganglion Anatomy: Results From a Randomized, Double-Blind, Placebo-Controlled Study in Patients With Pain Due to Osteoarthritis of the Knee or Hip, and a Series of Nonclinical Studies.

PURPOSE: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a chronic disease where breakdown and loss of cartilage leads to pain, primarily in the joints. Nerve growth factor inhibitors (eg, fasinumab) can reduce pain, but have been associated with nervous system adverse events (AEs). Here we describe the results of a Phase 2, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study and a series of nonclinical analyses investigating the effects of fasinumab on peripheral nerve function and ganglion anatomy. METHODS: In the Phase 2 study, 180 adults with knee or hip OA and moderate-to-severe pain inadequately controlled with
