Chronic cuffing of cervical vagus nerve inhibits efferent fiber integrity in rat model.

OBJECTIVE: Numerous studies of vagal nerve stimulation (VNS) have been published showing it to be a potential treatment for chronic inflammation and other related diseases and disorders. Studies in recent years have shown that electrical stimulation of the vagal efferent fibers can artificially modulate cytokine levels and reduce systematic inflammation. Most VNS research in the treatment of inflammation have been acute studies on rodent subjects. Our study tested VNS on freely moving animals by stimulating and recording from the cervical vagus with nerve cuff electrodes over an extended perio

Enlargement of Ribbons in Zebrafish Hair Cells Increases Calcium Currents But Disrupts Afferent Spontaneous Activity and Timing of Stimulus Onset.

In sensory hair cells of auditory and vestibular organs, the ribbon synapse is required for the precise encoding of a wide range of complex stimuli. Hair cells have a unique presynaptic structure, the synaptic ribbon, which organizes both synaptic vesicles and calcium channels at the active zone. Previous work has shown that hair-cell ribbon size is correlated with differences in postsynaptic activity. However, additional variability in postsynapse size presents a challenge to determining the specific role of ribbon size in sensory encoding. To selectively assess the impact of ribbon size on s

Post-exercise cortical depression following repetitive passive finger movement.

This study aimed to clarify the influence of range of repetitive passive finger movement on corticospinal excitability. Thirteen healthy subjects participated in this study. Passive index finger adduction-abduction movements were performed from 15° abduction to 15° adduction, 15° abduction to 0°, 0° to 15° adduction, and 15° adduction to 30° adduction, each at 15°/s for 10min on separate days. Motor evoked potentials (MEPs) elicited by transcranial magnetic stimulation and M- and F-waves were measured before and after each repetitive passive index finger movement protocol to evaluate changes i

Asymmetric Dichoptic Masking in Visual Cortex of Amblyopic Macaque Monkeys.

In amblyopia, abnormal visual experience leads to an extreme form of eye dominance, in which vision through the nondominant eye is degraded. A key aspect of this disorder is perceptual suppression: the image seen by the stronger eye often dominates during binocular viewing, blocking the image of the weaker eye from reaching awareness. Interocular suppression is the focus of ongoing work aimed at understanding and treating amblyopia, yet its physiological basis remains unknown. We measured binocular interactions in visual cortex of anesthetized amblyopic monkeys (female Macaca nemestrina), usin

Sensorimotor gating characteristics of violent men with comorbid psychosis and dissocial personality disorder: Relationship with antisocial traits and psychosocial deprivation.

Evidence suggests violence amongst those with psychosis is not aetiologically homogeneous, and that a large proportion of those who engage in violent behaviour have a comorbid antisocial personality disorder. Initial investigations indicate that this subgroup has distinct historical and neuropsychological characteristics, which may indicate diverse treatment needs. This study investigated sensorimotor gating characteristics of violent men with diagnoses of both psychosis and dissocial personality disorder (DPD) (n=21) relative to violent men with psychosis alone (n=12), DPD alone (n=14) and he

Circadian modulation of osmoregulated firing in rat supraoptic nucleus neurones.

The antidiuretic hormone vasopressin (VP) promotes water reabsorption from the kidney and levels of circulating VP are normally related linearly to plasma osmolality, aiming to maintain the latter close to a predetermined set point. Interestingly, VP levels rise also in the absence of an increase in osmolality during late sleep in various mammals, including rats and humans. This circadian rhythm is functionally important because the absence of a late night VP surge results in polyuria and disrupts sleep in humans. Previous work has indicated that the VP surge may be caused by facilitation of t

Clinical features of dystonia: a pathophysiological revisitation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To elucidate the pathophysiology of some clinical features of dystonic patients and to provide some new insight into the mechanisms underlying task-specific dystonia. RECENT FINDINGS: There are three general lines of work at the present time that may indicate the physiological substrate for dystonia. All three are persuasive and it is not clear whether they are related to each other or whether one is more important than the others. According to the first line of research, a loss of inhibition at different levels of the central nervous system might contribute for the excessi

Loss of inhibitory neuron AMPA receptors contributes to ataxia and epilepsy in stargazer mice.

Stargazer mice are characterized by ataxia and seizures, which resemble the human disorder absence epilepsy. Stargazin, the protein mutated in stargazer mice, promotes the expression and function of neuronal AMPA receptors (AMPARs). However, it is unclear how decreased expression of excitatory AMPARs generates stargazer seizures, given that seizures often result from increased neuronal excitability. Additionally, although stargazer ataxia has been attributed to loss of AMPARs from cerebellar granule cells, other cerebellar neurons have not been examined. To examine the role of AMPAR dysfunctio

Retuning of inferior colliculus neurons following spiral ganglion lesions: a single-neuron model of converging inputs.

Lesions of spiral ganglion cells, representing a restricted sector of the auditory nerve array, produce immediate changes in the frequency tuning of inferior colliculus (IC) neurons. There is a loss of excitation at the lesion frequencies, yet responses to adjacent frequencies remain intact and new regions of activity appear. This leads to immediate changes in tuning and in tonotopic progression. Similar effects are seen after different methods of peripheral damage and in auditory neurons in other nuclei. The mechanisms that underlie these postlesion changes are unknown, but the acute effects

[Nociception and chronic oral and cervicofacial pain].

This short review focuses on the main properties of the nervous system responsible for pain originating from oral, nasal and pharyngeal cavities. First, the major roles of the somatic sensations coming from the orofacial and pharyngeal areas are emphasized. Then, the description of the respective peripheral fields of the different cranial nerves involved in these somatic sensations is followed by the description of the primary afferent neurons and the central nuclei and pathways. The review emphasizes that pain does not result from a simple transmission of nervous impulses that would follow a

Exteroceptive suppression of masseter muscle activity in juvenile migraineurs.

The second exteroceptive suppression period (ES2) of masseter or temporalis muscle activity may be reduced in adults with chronic tension-type headache. In adults with migraine, ES2 was found normal or tended to be protracted. To date, no studies on exteroceptive suppression in children and adolescents with headaches have been published. We investigated the exteroceptive suppression of masseter muscle activity in 14 migraineurs and 19 controls between 6 and 18 years of age. It was elicited by electrical stimulation at the labial commissure. No differences were found regarding the first suppres

Impaired posture-dependent modulation of disynaptic reciprocal Ia inhibition in individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury.

Posture influences the strength of spinal reflex circuits in healthy individuals. The purpose of this study was to determine the extent to which sitting and standing posture influences the strength of reciprocal Ia inhibition between ankle flexor and extensor muscles in individuals with incomplete spinal cord injury (SCI). Ten individuals with SCI and 15 healthy individuals participated in the study. Short-latency reciprocal inhibition was measured by conditioning the soleus H-reflex with stimulation of the common peroneal nerve. There was no significant difference in the strength of reciproca

Intracortical excitability in the hand motor representation in hand dystonia and blepharospasm.

We sought to determine the activity of inhibiting and facilitating cortical circuits in areas surrounding a hand muscle motor representation in focal dystonia and in controls. In 15 patients with hand dystonia, 16 patients with blepharospasm, and age-matched controls, we applied suprathreshold transcranial magnetic stimuli with a figure-eight coil over the optimal representation of the relaxed abductor digiti minimi muscle of the dominant hand. Additional conditioning stimuli were given through a second figure-eight coil that was held either above the test coil or 2 cm or 4 cm apart in the ant

Mechanisms of alpha2-adrenoceptor-mediated inhibition in rabbit carotid body.

We have used the in vitro preparation of the intact carotid body (CB) and isolated chemoreceptor cells to elucidate the distribution and function of alpha2-adrenoreceptors. The significance of the study lies in the fact that norepinephrine (NE), being the neurotransmitter of the sympathetic innervation to the CB, is also abundant in chemoreceptor cells. In intact CB whose catecholamine (CA) deposits had been labeled by prior incubation with the CA precursor [3H]tyrosine, the alpha2-antagonist yohimbine (10 microM) potentiated the low-PO2 (33 and 60 mmHg)-induced release of [3H]CA by 100 and 53

[Multifocal motor neuropathies with persistent conduction blocks: a form of inflammatory demyelinating neuropathy].

Since the first cases described in 1986, multifocal motor neuropathy with persistent conduction blocks (MMN) appears to be a well-defined nosological entity. Clinical features include male-predominant occurrence, weakness often accompanied by cramps and fasciculations; topography of the motor involvement is characterized by assymetry, upper limb predominance, relation to the distribution of individual nerves or roots. Atrophy is variable but can lack despite severe weakness. Multifocal, purely motor and persistent conduction blocks are the electrophysiological hallmark of the disease. Serum an

Effect of anesthesia of the chorda tympani nerve on taste perception in humans.

Individuals who have sustained considerable damage to parts of the taste system often fail to experience changes in everyday taste experience. The two halves of the tongue are independently innervated: the chorda tympani (branch of the facial or VIIth cranial nerve) innervating the anterior two-thirds and the glossopharyngeal (IXth cranial nerve) innervating the posterior one-third. Anesthesia of the chorda tympani nerve on one side produced increased taste intensities for some stimuli on the area innervated by the glossopharyngeal nerve on the other side. Because this effect occurs across the

Modulation of postural tremors at the wrist by supramaximal electrical median nerve shocks in essential tremor, Parkinson's disease and normal subjects mimicking tremor.

The response of postural wrist tremors to supramaximal median nerve stimulation was examined in patients with hereditary essential tremor (n = 10) and Parkinson's disease (n = 9), and in normal subjects mimicking wrist tremor (n = 8). The average frequency of on-going tremor was the same in all three groups. Supramaximal peripheral nerve shocks inhibited and then synchronised the rhythmic electromyographic (EMG) activity of all types of tremor. The duration of inhibition ranged from 90 to 210ms, varying inversely with the frequency of on-going tremor. There was no significant difference in mea

Interactions between pathways controlling posture and gait at the level of spinal interneurones in the cat.

The properties of three interneuronal populations controlling posture and locomotion are briefly reviewed. These are interneurones mediating reciprocal inhibition of antagonistic muscles and interneurones in pathways from secondary muscle spindle afferents to ipsilateral and contralateral motoneurones, respectively. It will be shown that these interneurones subserve a variety of movements, with functionally specialized subpopulations being selected under different conditions. Mechanisms for gating the activity of these neurones appear to be specific for each of them but to act in concert. Inte
