Projections of the tectospinal tract to the upper cervical spinal cord of the cat: a study with the anterograde tracer PHA-L.

The goal of the present experiments was to re-examine the spinal projections of neurons in the superior colliculus (SC) of the cat by taking advantage of the high sensitivity of the anterograde tracer, phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin (PHA-L). In seven experiments, multiple injections of PHA-L into different regions of the SC labelled a total of 172 axons in the predorsal bundle; yet only 11 tectospinal tract (TST) axons were found in the upper cervical spinal cord. Collaterals emerging from these axons were rare and arose exclusively from TST axons with a diameter of less than 1 micron. Ind

Brain stem and cerebellar deficits in eye movement control.

Recent experimental studies allow more precise functional-anatomical correlations in patients with ocular motor disorders. The abducens nucleus contains two groups of cells that together subserve ipsilateral horizontal conjugate gaze: Motoneurons with axons that innervate the lateral rectus and internuclear neurons with axons that cross the midline, ascend in the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) and impinge upon medial rectus motoneurons. The pontine paramedian reticular formation (PPRF) contains burst neurons for horizontal saccades. The rostral interstitial nucleus of the MLF (riMLF) in

Connections of area 2 of somatosensory cortex with the anterior pulvinar and subdivisions of the ventroposterior complex in macaque monkeys.

The principal goal of the present study was to determine the thalamic connections of area 2 of postcentral somatosensory cortex of monkeys. The placement of injections of anatomical tracers (horseradish peroxidase, wheat germ agglutinin, or 3H-proline) was guided by extensive microelectrode maps of cortex in the region of the injection site. These maps identified the body parts represented in the cortex included in the injection site, and provided information about the physiological boundaries of area 2, which was related later to the cortical architecture. Most injections were placed in the r

Distribution and specific central projections of mechanoreceptors in the thorax and proximal leg joints of locusts.

Campaniform sensilla (CS) of the locust proximal leg segments are arranged predominantly as homologous groups on the trochantera and femora. Their number is reduced in the more specialized jumping legs. The specific projections of the primary afferent axons from single groups of CS are visualized after backfilling them with CoCl2 introduced through the dendritic area in the cuticle. The majority of central branching patterns reveal a high degree of uniformity if compared within a population, between populations of one segment, and between populations of different legs. All projections bifurcat

The central pathways of optic fibres in Xenopus tadpoles.

A cobalt chloride impregnation technique was applied to the optic nerve in Xenopus tadpoles and the central optic pathways were examined in cleared, whole-mounted preparations, and in thick sections. The overall plan of the optic input was visualized in relation to the outlines of the parts of the brain and details of the structure of the tectal optic neuropil, the neuropil of Bellonci and the basal optic neuropil were seen. The fibres in the main retinotectal tract maintained an orderly disposition with respect to each other, in contrast to the fibres of the basal optic tract, in which no ord

The longitudinal zonal pattern in the paramedian lobule of the cat's cerebellum: an analysis based on a correlation of recent HRP data with results of studies with other methods.

In a preceding study of the distribution of retrogradely labeled cells in the inferior olive of the cat after microinjections of horseradish peroxidase (HRP) in the contralateral paramedian lobule (Brodal and Walberg, '77b), three longitudinal zones were distinguished. The zones were assumed to correspond to Voogd's zones C1, C2 and D, receiving their afferents from parts of the dorsal accessory olive, of the medial accessory olive and of the dorsal lamella of the principal olive, respectively. Labeled cells were not found in the ventral lamella of the principal olive, however, although there

Electrophysiological investigations on the projections from the cerebral cortex to the vermal posterior lobe of the cerebellum.

The following cerebrocortical areas have been electrically stimulated in cats under Nembutal anaesthesia: forelimb and hindlimb areas of the primary sensorimotor cortex, primary and secondary acoustic areas and visual area. Stimulation of these regions evokes in the vermal portion of lobuli VI and VII of the cerebellum potentials at a short latency (2.8-3.5 ms) and at a longer latency (12-22 ms), which have been identified as due to mossy and climbing fibre inputs respectively. Each point of the cerebellar cortex receives usually projections by some and never by all the stimulated cerebrocorti

Anterior Thalamic Excitation and Feedforward Inhibition of Presubicular Neurons Projecting to Medial Entorhinal Cortex.

The presubiculum contains head direction cells that are crucial for spatial orientation. Here, we examined the connectivity and strengths of thalamic inputs to presubicular layer 3 neurons projecting to the medial entorhinal cortex in the mouse. We recorded pairs of projection neurons and interneurons while optogenetically stimulating afferent fibers from the anterior thalamic nuclei. Thalamic input differentially affects presubicular neurons: layer 3 pyramidal neurons and fast-spiking parvalbumin-expressing interneurons are directly and monosynaptically activated, with depressing dynamics, wh

Diversity of vestibular nuclei neurons targeted by cerebellar nodulus inhibition.

A functional role of the cerebellar nodulus and ventral uvula (lobules X and IXc,d of the vermis) for vestibular processing has been strongly suggested by direct reciprocal connections with the vestibular nuclei, as well as direct vestibular afferent inputs as mossy fibres. Here we have explored the types of neurons in the macaque vestibular nuclei targeted by nodulus/ventral uvula inhibition using orthodromic identification from the caudal vermis. We found that all nodulus-target neurons are tuned to vestibular stimuli, and most are insensitive to eye movements. Such non-eye-movement neurons

Tonic and phasic drive to medullary respiratory neurons during periodic breathing.

It is unknown how central neural activity produces the repetitive termination and restart of periodic breathing (PB). We hypothesized that inspiratory and expiratory neural activities would be greatest during the waxing phase and least during the waning phase. We analyzed diaphragmatic and medullary respiratory neural activities during PB in intact unanesthetized adult cats. Diaphragmatic activity was increased and phasic during the waxing phase and was decreased and tonic during the waning phase. Activity of expiratory (n=21) and inspiratory (n=40) neurons was generally increased and phasic d

A neural network model of Parkinson's disease bradykinesia.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is caused by dopamine (DA) depletion consequent to cell degeneration in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) and the ventral tegmental area (VTA). Although computational analyses of PD have focused on DA depletion in DA-recipient parts of the basal ganglia, there is also extensive DAergic innervation of the frontal and parietal cortex as well as the spinal cord. To understand PD bradykinesia, a comprehensive network model is needed to study how patterns of DA depletion at key cellular sites in the basal ganglia, cortex and spinal cord contribute to disordered neuro

Multi-Unit and Multi-Path system of the neural network can explain the steep dose-response of MAC.

PURPOSE: The slope of the dose-response curves of inhalation anesthetics is steep around the minimum alveolar concentration of inhalation anesthetics (MAC) value. Contrastingly, the anesthetic dose-response curves of ion channels and enzymes are gradual. This discrepancy in the steepness may be a key to solve the mechanisms of anesthesia. To explain the steepness we propose a mathematical model of the neural network related to MAC. METHODS: We assumed that, in order to show movement in response to a noxious stimulus, a signal needed to be transmitted from A to B. There are m conduction pathwa

Triple projections of neurones located in S1 and S2 segments of the cat spinal cord to the C6 segment, the cerebellum and the reticular formation.

Electrophysiological investigation of neurones in sacral segments of the spinal cord was performed in alpha-chloralose-anaesthetized cats in order to establish whether at least some ascending tract neurones could diverge to three different centres located in the brainstem, the cerebellum or the spinal cord. Recordings of antidromic action potentials from cells in S1 and S2 segments were taken following stimulation of the contralateral gigantocellular nucleus, contralateral restiform body and ipsi- and contralateral grey matter of the C6 spinal segment. Antidromic responses allowed identificati

Absence of tonic supraspinal control of substance P release in the substantia gelatinosa of the anaesthetized cat.

Antibody microprobes were used to measure immunoreactive substance P (irSP) release in the substantia gelatinosa of the lower lumbar spinal cord of barbiturate-anaesthetized cats. Release of irSP was produced by noxious peripheral stimuli. Such release was not altered by blocking spinal conduction at the first lumbar segment by cooling or transecting the spinal cord. The results suggest that the release of irSP from the central terminals of nociceptors is not subject to tonic supraspinal inhibition.

Reconstruction of axonal collaterals from sparse locus coeruleus noradrenergic neurons reveals their non-uniform projections in the cerebral cortex.

The locus coeruleus (LC) is composed primarily of norepinephrine (NE) neurons that project widely throughout the brain. The LC plays a critical role in controlling behavior, particularly arousal. Previously, it was thought that the LC-NE system functioned by releasing NE uniformly throughout the brain. However, recent evidence suggests that its cortical projections are organized into modules that coordinate diverse-and sometimes opposing-functions, such as the formation and extinction of fear memories. Nevertheless, many details remain unclear and require data from the axon collaterals of spar

Thalamostriatal circuit as a therapeutic target of alcohol use disorder.

Alcohol Use Disorder (AUD) is a chronic neuropsychiatric disorder characterized by high relapse rates and limited treatment efficacy. In this review, we focus on evidence that chronic alcohol exposure disrupts intralaminar thalamic input to the dorsal striatum, particularly Pf/CM-Pf-related regulation of dorsomedial striatal cholinergic interneurons, a pathway implicated in reversal learning and cognitive flexibility in preclinical models. We further distinguish this circuit from PVT-centered thalamic pathways that influence alcohol-related reward, aversion, and relapse-like behavior through v

Viral Tracing Gone Viral: Expanded Possibilities Call for Increased Caution in Describing Cerebellar Network Connections.

This review discusses the huge expansion of using cleverly constructed neurotropic viruses and viral transgenes in neuroanatomical research, with a special focus on the cerebellar field. Thanks to the near-limitless possibilities these new tracing techniques offer, vital new information on connections and functions within the brain are rapidly becoming available. However, tracing techniques in general and viral tracing techniques in particular, can harbor some pitfalls and drawbacks that need to be carefully evaluated in order to come to the correct interpretation of obtained results. Structural characteristics of local cortical networks wired by distance dependent connectivity rules.

BACKGROUND: The function of the cerebral cortex is shaped by its anatomical connectivity, yet experimental findings on connection probabilities in local cortical networks remain inconsistent. This study explores structural characteristics of local cortical networks based on distance dependent, Gaussian connectivity profiles. Monolayers of 101 × 101 pyramidal neurons were examined. Their connectivity was based on experimental anatomical or electrophysiological data. In the anatomical setting the connection probability between neighboring neurons was 0.8. In the electrophysiological scenario con
