Galactosialidosis: neuropathological findings in a case of the late-infantile type.

The neuropathological findings in a 13-year-old Japanese male showing decrease of sialidase and beta-galactosidase activities are reported. The patient was the product of normal pregnancy to consanguineous parents. He started to sit at 8 months, stand at 20 months and walk at age of 2; mental retardation, visual disturbance, cerebellar ataxia, myoclonus and epilepsy developed by the age of 10, and he died at 13. Neuropathological investigation revealed neuronal loss and storage. Severe loss of neurons was observed in the thalamus, globus pallidus, lateral geniculate body, gracile nucleus, Purk

[Neurocysticercosis: neuropathologic study of a fatal case treated with praziquantel].

The neuropathological findings in a fatal case of neurocysticercosis treated with praziquantel are reported in this paper. The extensive necrosis of the parasites besides the exuberant inflammatory response evidence the efficacy of the drug. The severe and necrotizing type of the inflammatory response to the dead parasites may have played an important role in the cause of death of this patient, by developing severe intracranial hypertension.

Parkinsonism and extraocular motor abnormalities with unusual neuropathological findings.

Parkinsonian patients with ocular motility abnormalities are usually considered to have progressive supranuclear palsy. However, a number of other conditions have been noted to have the combination of parkinsonism and ocular problems. We report a case of rigid akinetic parkinsonism, oculomotor palsy, and eyelid apraxia with postmortem examination. Our findings are unusual in that there was marked gliosis of the substantia nigra with a large amount of free extracellular neuromelanin despite a 3-year clinical course. Only rare hyaline inclusion bodies and no neurofibrillary tangles were seen in

Developmental dyslexia in women: neuropathological findings in three patients.

Brains from male cases with dyslexia show symmetry of the planum temporale and predominantly left-sided cerebrocortical microdysgenesis. We now report on three women with dyslexia. In all brains, the planum temporale was again symmetrical. Also, in two of the brains, multiple foci of cerebrocortical glial scarring were present. In both women, many of the scars were myelinated, suggesting origination during late intrauterine or early postnatal life. In one, scars were mainly left perisylvian and involved portions of the vascular border zone of the temporal cortex. In the other, scars were more

Anencephaly: clinical determination of brain death and neuropathologic studies.

Twelve liveborn anencephalic infants were serially examined to determine if they would meet our clinical criteria for whole brain death within a 7-day period: Protocol 1 infants (6) received intensive care including intubation from birth; and Protocol 2 infants (6) received intensive care during the period in which death was imminent. Brain death was determined by absence of brainstem function, including loss of all cranial nerve responses and sustained apnea (PCO2 greater than 60 torr) for 48 hours with confirmation of findings by an outside consulting child neurologist. The initial examinati

"Marden-Walker syndrome": neuropathologic findings in two siblings.

Neuropathologic examination of two siblings with phenotypic features consistent with Marden-Walker syndrome revealed central nervous system abnormalities which include reduction in the number of spinal anterior horn cells. The occurrence of these changes in a sibling pair provides strong evidence for a genetic etiology. The relationship between the neuropathologic changes and other phenotypic manifestations in this syndrome and in the closely related syndrome of Pena-Shokeir are discussed.

Neurochemical, neurophysiological, and neuropathological studies in vitamin E deficiency.

It is now recognized that vitamin E is essential for normal neurological structure and function in both man and experimental animals, with severe deficiency resulting in a characteristic neurological syndrome. The reasons why the neurological system should be particularly susceptible to a deficiency of this fat-soluble vitamin, and the mechanisms involved, are not known. In this review, the neurochemistry, neuropathology, and neurophysiology associated with vitamin E deficiency are described and correlated. A deficiency of vitamin E results in a "distal or dying back" axonal neuropathy which p…

Neuropathological findings in an autopsy series of Italian subjects with AIDS.

Lesions of the central nervous system were seen in 13/22 autopsies of Italian subjects affected by the acquired immune deficiency syndrome and including 19 intravenous drug addicts. Multinucleated cells similar to those originally described by Sharer et al. [1985] in response to direct central nervous system lesions by the human immune deficiency virus were seen in five subjects. Isolated or multiple opportunistic infections of the brain including cerebral toxoplasmosis (7 cases), progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (4), cytomegalovirus encephalitis (3), and tuberculous meningoencephali

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease: correlation of MRI and neuropathologic findings.

In a patient with Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD), MRI showed increased signal intensity in striatum, thalamus, and cerebral cortex in images obtained with TR 1,600 msec, and TE 35 and 70 msec. In postmortem examination, all affected areas showed the hallmarks of CJD, such as status spongiosus, gliosis, and nerve cell loss. MRI can help to differentiate CJD from other dementing processes.

Implications of the neuropathology of HIV encephalitis for the pathogenesis of Alzheimer disease.

The strong familial association of Alzheimer disease (AD), the difficulty in transmitting the disease to animals, the mapping of the amyloid gene to human chromosome 21, and the non-inflammatory neuropathology have all been considered evidence against a viral etiology for this disease. However, unconventional slow viral infections share some of these traits with AD and yet they are caused by retroviruses or suspected viruses. The recent discovery of 2 human retroviruses causing central nervous system pathology similar to spongiform encephalopathies should prompt renewed search for retroviral c…

[Neuropathological study of 31 cases of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome].

Post-mortem study of every patient who died from AIDS in Pitié-Salpêtrire Hospital from June 1984 to November 1985 was performed without regard to the presence of neurological signs and symptoms. Autopsy were performed in 31/48 cases. Patients had been hospitalized in the Departments of Parasitology-Infectious Disease (24 cases) Internal Medicine (4 cases) and Neurology (3 cases). In every case, formalin-fixed material from the brain and the spinal cord were embedded in paraffin (20 samples), stained with hematoxylin-eosin, PAS, Alcian blue, Giemsa, Grocott and Ziehl techniques and Bodian's si

Xeroderma pigmentosum with neurological abnormalities. A clinical and neuropathological study.

A clinical and neuropathological study of a case of xeroderma pigmentosum with severe neurological abnormalities was performed. The patient developed sensitivity to the sun, followed by freckles and malignant skin tumors. Some years after the onset of the cutaneous symptoms, a slowly progressive mental deterioration was noted. Subsequently, dysarthria, increased sensitivity and a tendency to cry and to be easily frightened developed together with ataxia and spasticity of the limbs. Late in the course of the disease the patient was severely disabled because of spastic tetraplegia. The clinical

Adult fragile X syndrome. Clinico-neuropathologic findings.

Fragile X syndrome [fra (X)] is currently accepted as the second most frequent chromosomal disorder associated with developmental disability. Although next to Down syndrome in frequency, no postmortem studies of confirmed adult cases had been reported. The autopsy examination of a 62-year-old, moderately retarded man with the fra (X) syndrome confirmed the preferential involvement of cerebral and testicular structures in this disorder. Dendritic spine abnormalities of the type observed in trisomic chromosomal disorders were associated with synaptic immaturity. Severe testicular hypogonadism ac

Neuropathologic evaluation of 40 confirmed cases of Legionella pneumonia.

Autopsy examination of the brain was performed in 40 cases of Legionella pneumonia. Thirty-nine of 40 patients had underlying chronic or acute medical problems. Sixteen patients (40%) had neurologic signs or symptoms that were not explained by preexisting disease. CSF was normal in six of seven patients examined; CSF protein content was 66 mg/100 ml in one patient. Neuropathologic examination in all 40 patients demonstrated no lesions attributable to disseminated Legionella pneumophila. Mechanisms other than direct cerebral invasion by the causative organism must be sought to explain the neuro

[Neuropathological findings in Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (author's transl)].

The Lesch-Nyhan syndrome is commonly regarded as a metabolic disorder of the purine metabolism without specific morphological changes. In the present paper a report is given on a 13-year-old boy. The neuropathological investigation revealed PAS positive deposits in the ganglion cells of the nucleus olivaris. In HE preparations, the storage material appears as light foamy accumulations displacing nuclei to the cell border. The deposits are sudan-III-negative and there is no UV fluorescence. Electron microscopically the primarily formol fixed tissue of the nucleus olivaris shows circumscribed ac

Cerebral fat embolism: a neuropathological study of a microembolic state.

Multiple cerebral petechiae associated with intravascular globules of neutral fat and localized primarily within the white matter are distinctive lesions which secure the pathologic diagnosis of cerebral fat embolism. The abundance of these lesions in an unknown, but presumably small, percentage of cases of fat embolism, along with the even more widespread distribution of embolic fat droplets throughout both white and gray matter, suggest that these lesions and emboli must have a profound effect on neurologic function. Nevertheless, respiratory insufficiency is by far a more common clinical ma

The syndrome of multiple ankyloses and facial anomalies. A neuropathologic analysis.

An infant with the clinical syndrome of multiple joint ankyloses and facial anomalies was examined at autopsy. Neuropathologic analysis disclosed reduced numbers of spinal motor neurons and denervation atrophy of skeletal muscle as the basis for joint ankyloses. A comparison of the neuropathologic findings in this case to those to other clinically similar cases reported recently confirms that the phenotype is not specific, and occurs in a variety of neuro-muscular diseases only some of which are likely to be inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. Diagnostic evaluation of these disorders sh

Cockayne syndrome: unusual neuropathological findings and review of the literature.

Two siblings with Cockayne syndrome (CS) are described and the literature on the subject is briefly reviewed. Of particular interest were the unusual neuropathological findings in 1 of the patients. These included microcephaly, white matter atrophy with patchy loss of myelinated fibers, calcifications of the basal ganglia, occasional ferrugination of cerebral and cerebellar neurons, and severe cerebellar degeneration. Findings not previously reported in CS were proliferation of extremely bizarre astrocytes, neurofibrillary tnagles, and pigmentation of the globus pallidus. We conclude that brai

Acute thallotoxicosis: neuropathological and spectrophotometric studies on an autopsy case.

Acute thallotoxicosis has been studied in an autopsy case with characteristic neurological symptoms. Pathologic findings were composed of a rarefaction in cerebral white matter, swelling and fragmentation in peripheral nerve fibers and some chromatolytic changes in neurons of cranial nerves and spinal cord. Trace amounts of thallous salt were measured in the tissues from the brain, liver and kidney using spectrophotometric technique. The locus of thallium affection is assumed to be a mitochondrial membrane with a specific affinity to the thallous ion.
