Personality and memory: accelerometer-measured physical activity as a potential explanatory pathway.

OBJECTIVES: Self-reported physical activity (PA) mediates the association between personality and cognition. This study examines whether accelerometer-based measures of physical activity and sedentary behavior mediate the association between personality and memory. METHODS: Participants were 2471 individuals aged 50 to 89 years (mean age = 69.70, SD = 8.56) from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing. Personality traits, sociodemographic factors, accelerometer-measured PA, and memory were assessed in Wave 10 (2021/2022). RESULTS: Higher neuroticism was associated with lower memory performa…

Trait mindfulness is negatively related to physical health symptoms over time.

Trait mindfulness refers to one's natural tendency to be aware of and attentive to present experiences. Although the trait has been associat … nally, participants answered questions to assess general health, recent perceived stress, and trait neuroticism. Initial enrolment included 409 participants with 288 at Time 2, 218 at Time 3, and the final wave including 172 participants. Findings indicated that those higher in trait mindfulness reported fewer symptoms across all time points, regardless of ge …

Relationship between Personality Traits and Postpartum Depressive Symptoms in Women who Became Pregnant via Infertility Treatment.

The status of postpartum depression was elucidated herein with the use of the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) in women in Shikoku, Japan who became pregnant and gave birth after undergoing infertility treatment, including assisted reproductive technology (ART). The assessment was performed during their children's 4-month health examination. The relationships between postpartum depression and the mothers' background factors and scores on the Big Five personality traits scale were also examined. Of the Big Five personality traits, the scores for neuroticism were significantly higher …

Personality traits and negative affect mediate the relationship between cortical thickness of superior frontal cortex and aggressive behavior.

Aggression reflects the psychological and physical behavior that perpetrator intends to harm victim. Initiation of aggression is influenced … by negative affect (anger and sadness), and fully mediated by personality traits (agreeableness and neuroticism). Taken together, these experimental findings established dorsal prefrontal cortex as the key region in generating aggressive behavior, and gave a neutral explanation for why individuals with high negative affect and neuroticism exhibit more aggress …

Big Five Personality Traits are Associated with Tinnitus Improvement Over Time.

Previous studies have shown that personality traits are related to tinnitus distress as measured by the Tinnitus Handicap Inventory (THI) and the Tinnitus Questionnaire (TQ). However, little is known about the role of personality on tinnitus distress over time. We collected the THI and the TQ of 388 patients who visited a tertiary tinnitus clinic between 2012 and 2017, and who filled in a survey with the same questionnaires plus the Big Five Index 2 in 2018. We used personality traits and facets to predict tinnitus distress cross-sectionally and longitudinally. Neuroticism, extraversion, agree…

The prevalence, clinical correlates and structure of phobic fears in Han Chinese women with recurrent major depression.

BACKGROUND: Phobic fears are common in the general population and among individuals with major depression (MD). We know little about the prevalence, clinical correlates, and structure of phobic fears in Chinese women with MD. METHODS: We assessed 22 phobic fears in 6017 Han Chinese women with MD. We used exploratory factor analysis to examine the structure of these phobic fears. We examined the relationship between individual phobic fears and the severity of MD, neuroticism, comorbid panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder and dysthymia using logistic regression models. RESULTS: The fre…

Life history strategy and young adult substance use.

This study tested whether life history strategy (LHS) and its intergenerational transmission could explain young adult use of common psychoactive substances. We tested a sequential structural equation model using data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth. During young adulthood, fast LHS explained 61% of the variance in overall liability for substance use. Faster parent LHS predicted poorer health and lesser alcohol use, greater neuroticism and cigarette smoking, but did not predict fast LHS or overall liability for substance use among young adults. Young adult neuroticism was indepe…

Psychosocial problems in families of disabled children.

Psychosocial problems faced by parents and other family members were studied in 50 families with a physically disabled child (PD group), 50 with a mentally retarded child (MR group) and 50 with a healthy child (control group). A semi-structured questionnaire assisted interview and standardized scales were used to measure social burden, marital adjustment and maternal neuroticism. Families with disabled children perceived greater financial stress, frequent disruption of family routine and leisure, poor social interaction, and ill effects on their physical and mental health as compared to famili…

Nervous temperament in infant monkeys is associated with reduced sensitivity of leukocytes to cortisol's influence on trafficking.

There is growing evidence that temperament/personality factors are associated with immune function and health-related outcomes. Neuroticism, in particular, is a risk-factor for several diseases, many with a strong inflammatory component. We propose that neuroticism (or nervous temperament in monkeys) is related to dysregulation of immune function by glucocorticoids. The present study tested the hypothesis that animals with a nervous temperament would show no relationship between cortisol concentrations and leukocyte numbers in peripheral blood (an easily obtainable measure of glucocorticoid-me…
