Post-synthetic modulation of the charge distribution in a metal-organic framework for optimal binding of carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide.

Modulation of pore environment is an effective strategy to optimize guest binding in porous materials. We report the post-synthetic modification of the charge distribution in a charged metal-organic framework, MFM-305-CH3, [Al(OH)(L)]Cl, [(H2L)Cl = 3,5-dicarboxy-1-methylpyridinium chloride] and its effect on guest binding. MFM-305-CH3 shows a distribution of cationic (methylpyridinium) and anionic (chloride) centers and can be modified to release free pyridyl N-centres by thermal demethylation of the 1-methylpyridinium moiety to give the neutral isostructural MFM-305. This leads simultaneously

Application of the National Ignition Facility distinguishable-from-background program to accelerator facilities at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory.

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory must control potentially activated materials and equipment in accordance with U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Order 458.1, Radiation Protection of the Public and the Environment, which requires DOE approval of the process used to release volumetrically contaminated personal property and establishes a dose constraint of 10 µSv y(-1) (1 mrem y(-1)) for clearance of such property. The National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory developed a technical basis document and protocol for determining the radiological status of property that

Mesenchymal stem cells home to injured tissues when co-infused with hematopoietic cells to treat a radiation-induced multi-organ failure syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have suggested that ex vivo expansion of autologous hematopoietic cells could be a therapy of choice for the treatment of bone marrow failure. We investigated the potential of a combined infusion of autologous ex vivo expanded hematopoietic cells with mesenchymal (MSCs) for the treatment of multi-organ failure syndrome following irradiation in a non-human primate model. METHODS: Hematopoietic cells and MSCs were expanded from bone marrow aspirates. MSCs were transduced with the gene encoding for the green fluorescent protein (e-GFP), in order to track them following

Decommissioning procedure and induced activation levels in the vault walls of a 11 MeV self-shielded Medical Cyclotron: simulations and measurements.

This study outlines the decommissioning process of an 11 MeV self-shielded medical cyclotron operated for over 12 years at the Ospedale San Raffaele, Milano, Italy. A comprehensive analysis of neutron-induced activation in the vault walls was performed to guide safe demolition procedures. Using FLUKA Monte Carlo simulations and laboratory-based gamma and beta spectrometry, the activity of long-lived radionuclides, particularly 55Fe, was evaluated across multiple wall depths. Results demonstrated that residual activity was primarily confined to the top 5 cm of the wall, with some samples exceed

Medical management of heavily exposed victims: an experience at the Tokaimura criticality accident.

A criticality accident occurred at the uranium conversion plant in Tokaimura, Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan on 30 September 1999. When uranyl nitrate was overloaded to a critical mass level, uncontrolled fission reaction occurred. A procedure was carried out according to the JCO manual, although not an officially approved manual. Three workers were heavily exposed to neutrons andγ-rays produced by nuclear fission, and they subsequently developed acute radiation syndrome (ARS). The average doses to the whole body of the three workers were approximately 25, 9, and 3 GyEq (biologically equivalent dos…

Cell death following BNCT: a theoretical approach based on Monte Carlo simulations.

In parallel to boron measurements and animal studies, investigations on radiation-induced cell death are also in progress in Pavia, with the … owed good agreement also with experimental data obtained by our group exposing DHD cells to thermal neutrons in the TRIGA Mark II reactor of the University of Pavia; this allowed to validate the model also for a BNCT exposure scenario, providing a useful predictive tool to bridge the gap between irradiation and cell death.

Hemoglobin dynamics in red blood cells: correlation to body temperature.

A transition in hemoglobin behavior at close to body temperature has been discovered recently by micropipette aspiration experiments on single red blood cells (RBCs) and circular dichroism spectroscopy on hemoglobin solutions. The transition temperature was directly correlated to the body temperatures of a variety of species. In an exploration of the molecular basis for the transition, we present neutron scattering measurements of the temperature dependence of hemoglobin dynamics in whole human RBCs in vivo. The data reveal a change in the geometry of internal protein motions at 36.9 degrees C

[Accumulation of some toxic microelements in liver tissue and helminthes obtained from patients with Opisthorhis felineus (Rivolta, 1884) and Metorchis bilis (Braun, 1890) invasion].

According to some available reports, it is known that there may be an increased accumulation of some micronutrients in the samples of hair and blood. The purpose of the present investigation was to study the general regularities of accumulation of micronutrients in the samples of liver tissue and helminthic bodies obtained from patients with opisthorchiasis who lived in Tomsk and who had different etiological types of Opisthorchis (O. felineus) and Metorchis (M. bilis). The fact that M. bilis helminthes were present in 15 of 22 liver samples was verified by polymerase chain reaction. As compar

A preliminary study of chromium distribution in chromium-rich brewer's yeast cell by NAA.

The purpose of this study was to assess the chromium (Cr) distribution in chromium-rich brewer's yeast cell. The chromium concentrations in the cell wall and protoplast fractions of the chromium-rich yeast were determined by neutron activation analysis (NAA). Moreover, the combined state of chromium and amino acid content in the Cr-rich brewer's yeasts was analyzed and measured. The experimental results indicate that the introduction of water-soluble chromium(III) salt as a component of the culture medium for yeasts results in a substantial amount of chromium absorbed through the cell wall by

Serum selenium concentrations in rheumatoid arthritis.

Selenium is a trace element and an essential part of the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, which protects cells from oxidative damage. Selenium has been shown to have antiproliferative, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and immune altering effects. Serum selenium concentrations in 101 patients with seropositive rheumatoid arthritis were found to be significantly lower than those in 29 normal, healthy controls (mean (SD) 148 (42) v 160 (25) micrograms/l) and also lower than those in eight patients with fibrositis (148 (42) v 166 (25) micrograms/l). It is speculated that serum selenium concentrations m

Development of a switching-type fluorescence sensor for the detection of boronic acid-containing agents.

Since the therapeutic effect of boron neutron capture therapy is influenced by the intracellular distribution profile of boronoagents containing 10B atoms, it is necessary to establish a method that can determine the intracellular distribution profile of boronoagents. We aimed to develop a small molecule-based fluorescence sensor that changes its fluorescence properties upon complexation with the boronic acid moiety of a boronoagent. Thus, we designed a 2-(2-pyridyl)phenol derivative PPN-1 by introducing a N,O ligand substructure into a zinc sensor probe with excellent fluorescence properties.

On the atomic structure of cocaine in solution.

Cocaine is an amphiphilic drug which has the ability to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Here, a combination of neutron diffraction and computation has been used to investigate the atomic scale structure of cocaine in aqueous solutions. Both the observed conformation and hydration of cocaine appear to contribute to its ability to cross hydrophobic layers afforded by the BBB, as the average conformation yields a structure which might allow cocaine to shield its hydrophilic regions from a lipophilic environment. Specifically, the carbonyl oxygens and amine group on cocaine, on average, form

Parameters ruling optimization of radiolabelling of polyamino polycarboxylated functionalized peptide derivatives: a case study report.

Parameters studies revealed that successful labeling of DTPA-Neurotensin(8-13) analogues depend on several physico-chemical parameters. The pH of the reaction mixture seemed to be the most critical parameter for obtaining high labeling yields; quantitative radiolabelling was only guaranteed at a pH between 4.2 and 5.5. At a pH of 4.5, metal ion contaminants originating from peptide synthesis and purification procedures were shown not to effect radiolabelling. Nevertheless, proper reducing agents were included in a proposed Kit labeling procedure in order to avoid potential competition from tri

Structure of supercooled and glassy water under pressure.

We use molecular-dynamics simulations to study the effect of temperature and pressure on the local structure of liquid water in parallel with neutron-scattering experiments. We find, in agreement with experimental results, that the simulated liquid structure at high pressure is nearly independent of temperature, and remarkably similar to the known structure of the high-density amorphous ice. Further, at low pressure, the liquid structure appears to approach the experimentally measured structure of low-density amorphous ice as temperature decreases. These results are consistent with the postula

[Dosimetric planning of intracavitary multi-position irradiation in cancer of the corpus uteri].

An algorithm for the dosimetric planning of intracavitary multiposition irradiation of corpus uteri cancer patients is proposed making use of some elements of the inverse problem solution and permitting one to calculate without computer. The algorithm is used for irradiation planning for the Soviet ANET-B unit with 252Cf sources. Conditions for the inverse problem solution applied to the dosimetric planning of intracavitary multiposition irradiation in case of the use of two dosing points have been formulated. The algorithm makes it possible to calculate a biologically isoeffective dose of mix

Determination of trace element Ag and Sc concentrations in human cataractous lenses.

For the detection and determination of the trace elements Ag and Sc in mature human cataractous lenses, the methods of neutron activation analysis was used. As regards Ag, attempts made in the past to establish its presence in the cataractous lens had failed, while Sc has not so far been thoroughly investigated. Our study of the two elements was also correlated to the age and sex of the patients with senile cataract. It was found that once senile cataract has fully matured, the determined trace-element concentrations no longer appear to be related to age and/or sex of the patients.
