Changes of a Congenital Nevus of the Vulva after the Beginning of Puberty.

Little is known about the clinical course of genital nevi, particularly congenital ones. We present the case of a girl with a congenital genital nevus that, after the beginning of puberty, doubled its size. The nevus was excised, and histopathology revealed a dysplastic melanocytic nevus with mild and rare severe atypia. Our case illustrates the changes observed in a congenital nevus of the genitalia after puberty, when the genitalia change due to hormonal effects, which occasionally may cause unnecessary anxiety. Moreover, our case underlines the ambiguous histological features of genital nev…

A retrospective analysis of secondary malignancy development in nevus sebaceus.

Nevus sebaceous (NS) is a benign hamartomatous lesion; however, benign proliferative lesions are less frequently associated with secondary neoplasms. The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of secondary benign and malignant tumours seen in NS lesions, and to reveal the histopathological features of these lesions. Eighty-six NS cases were retrospectively evaluated for gender, age, lesion location, and accompanying lesions, as well as secondary benign and malignant tumours. The data obtained using descriptive statistics were analysed. 66.3% of cases were male, 33.7% were female, and …

A case of basal cell nevus syndrome with a SUFU mutation.

Basal cell nevus syndrome (Gorlin syndrome) is a rare genetic condition characterized by multiple basal cell carcinomas, often arising before age 20.  Most cases result from a mutation in the patched 1 gene-part of the sonic hedgehog pathway. Rarely, this condition is related to a suppressor of fused gene mutation, which occurs downstream from Smoothened, and is unresponsive to Smoothened inhibitors including vismodegib and sonidegib. Notably, basal cell nevus syndrome, secondary to a suppressor of fused gene mutation, is associated with a higher incidence of childhood medulloblastoma with imp…

Nevus sebaceous of the eyelid: Unique presentation and literature review.

Nevus sebaceous has been described since 1895 by Jadassohn. It has been described as unctuous yellow nodules with granular-pitted surfaces as a hypertrophic sebaceous gland. It usually appears on the face, scalp, and neck. It has been stated to involve three stages. (1) Being small and yellow in nature and hairless. (2) Enlargement of the glandular part. (3) Malignant transformation. There are a few cases of nevus sebaceous involving the eyelid margin that have been reported in the English literature. We here report a case report of a nevus sebaceous in a child involving the upper and lower li…

Wilson's Disease and Nevus of Ota in a Child: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Wilson's disease is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that disrupts copper metabolism. It presents with distinctive ocular manifestations. Oculodermal melanosis, commonly referred to as nevus of Ota, is a painless condition characterized by hyperpigmentation in and around the eye. In this case report, we describe the unique occurrence of both conditions in this pediatric patient. CASE PRESENTATION: A 10-year-old girl exhibited classic ocular signs associated with Wilson's disease, including Kayser-Fleischer rings and sunflower-type cataracts. Additionally, she displayed unilat…

Clinical characteristics of intradermal nevus in the external auditory canal.

Melanocytic nevus occurring in the external auditory canal (EAC) is uncommon. Therefore, in the absence of sufficient clinical experience, this disease may be challenging to be suspected even with a physical examination. Herein, clinical and demographic features of intradermal nevus in the EAC were investigated. Patients with an intradermal nevus on histopathological examination (n = 15; 2 men and 13 women; P = .005) were included from a pool of patients who underwent surgical resection for EAC tumors between November 2011 and March 2022. Data were retrospectively collected on their sex, appea…

Rapid Growth and Evolution of a Dysplastic Nevus During Pregnancy.

During pregnancy, many patients may experience changes in the size or characteristics of pigmented lesions including common and dysplastic n … isms through which melanocytic lesions may evolve. Many observations among patients with dysplastic nevus syndrome and those without this diagnosis can provide some evidence for how and why melanocytic lesions may change during pregnancy and provide support for clinical decisions in managing such concerns. Here we describe the case of a 27-year-old fema …

Dysplastic melanocytic nevus: Are molecular findings the key to the diagnosis?

The primary differential diagnosis of melanoma is dysplastic nevus. Until now, the final diagnosis is based on histological findings. With modern techniques, pathologists receive very early melanocytic lesions, which do not fit all malignant criteria. In those cases, even the concurrence between specialists and intraobserver agreement is not good. A molecular test could be developed to improve the accuracy of melanocytic lesions diagnosis and help in challenging lesions. The objective of this study is to provide a literary review looking for molecular markers that characterize dysplastic nevi …

Epidermolytic epidermal nevus caused by a somatic mutation in KRT2.

Superficial epidermolytic ichthyosis (formerly Ichthyosis bullosa of Siemens) is an uncommon condition caused by dominant mutations in KRT2 encoding keratin 2. Epidermolytic epidermal nevus due to somatic mutations in KRT2 is even rarer. Here, we report the third case of KRT2-associated epidermal nevus and review the literature.

Eccrine Nevus on the Neck: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Eccrine nevus is an extremely rare benign cutaneous hamartoma that usually occurs in childhood and adolescence. It has a wide range of clinical manifestations, and histological findings reveal a proliferation of structurally normal eccrine ducts. Herein, we present a case of eccrine nevus on the neck of an 8-year-old girl. Our literature review reveals that the head and neck region is a rare anatomical location for eccrine nevus as it has a predilection for extremities. Our review also suggests that overlying skin changes are common in eccrine nevus regardless of accompanying localized hyperhi…

Osteonevus of Nanta: a case report in a combined melanocytic nevus.

Secondary osteoma cutis is a phenomenon that may occur in several conditions. When it occurs in a melanocytic nevus it is named osteonevus of Nanta, an event considered uncommon and characterized by the presence of bone formation adjacent or interposed with melanocytic cells. There are reports of its occurrence in various melanocytic lesions, being more frequently associated with intradermal nevus. We report a case of osteonevus of Nanta in combined nevus, possibly the first description of this association.

Is There More Than One Road to Nevus-Associated Melanoma?

The association of melanoma with a preexisting nevus is still a debated subject. Histopathological data support an associated nevus in approximately 30% of all excised melanomas. The annual risk of an individual melanocytic nevus becoming malignant is extremely low and has been estimated to be approximately 0.0005% (or less than 1 in 200,000) before the age of 40 years, to 0.003% (1 in 33,000) in patients older than 60 years. Current understanding, based on the noticeable, small, truly congenital nevi and nevi acquired early in life, is that the first develops before puberty, presents with a d…

Surgical management of a conjunctival nevus with amniotic membrane transplantation.

PURPOSE: Nevi of the conjunctiva are usually benign pigmented tumorous lesions located in the bulbar conjunctiva. In most conjunctival nevus cases, the patient wants the lesion to be removed for cosmetic reasons, but excisional biopsies are best for lesions suspicious for malignancy. This case report illustrates the intraoperative surgical management, histological findings, and the course of healing in a conjunctival nevus patient. CASE REPORT: A 26-year-old man was referred to our eye hospital with a large bulbar conjunctival nevus of the right eye. Upon examination, there was a large pigmen…
