Hand hygiene among nurses in pediatric blood and marrow transplantation setting: a best practice implementation project.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this project was to promote evidence-based best practice regarding hand hygiene among nurses in a pediatric blood and marrow transplantation (BMT) setting. INTRODUCTION: Healthcare-associated infections (HAI) represent important complications of healthcare with potentially major impact on patient outcomes. Most HAI are transmitted through the hands of healthcare professionals (HCP) and therefore hand hygiene is the simplest, most effective and proven method for preventing HAI. However, the overall compliance rate of HCP with hand hygiene remains at a very low level. In

Knowledge and Practices of Physicians and Nurses Related to Urine Cultures in Catheterized Patients: An Assessment of Adherence to IDSA Guidelines.

BACKGROUND: A positive urine culture often drives initiation of antimicrobials even in the absence of symptoms. Our objectives were to evaluate the knowledge and practice patterns related to ordering urine cultures in patients with indwelling urinary catheters. METHODS: We performed chart reviews of catheter-associated urinary tract infections (CAUTIs) at our academic health care system between October 1, 2015, and September 30, 2017, to assess practice patterns related to the assessment of potential CAUTIs. Following this, we surveyed physicians and nurses about indications for ordering urin

Disorder-specific psychosocial interventions for bipolar disorder--a systematic review of the evidence for mental health nursing practice.

AIMS: To systematically review the evidence for the efficacy of psychosocial interventions for bipolar disorder and examine the implications for mental health nursing practice. BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder is associated with significant psychosocial impairment and high use of mental health services. Generally medication is effective in the treatment of acute episodes but there is increasing evidence that while a large majority of patients recover from these episodes of mania and/or depression, many do not achieve a functional recovery. In response a range of psychotherapies have either been a

Shifting moral values to enhance access to health care: harm reduction as a context for ethical nursing practice.

BACKGROUND: People who are street involved including those experiencing homelessness and substance use are at increased risk of morbidity and mortality. Such inequities are exacerbated when those facing the greatest inequities in health have the least access to health care. These concerns have rarely been addressed in bioethics and there has been a lack of explicit attention to the dominant societal and organizational values that structure such injustices. The purpose of this paper is to describe the underlying value tensions that impact ethical nursing practice and affect equity in access to
