The methodology used to establish tolerable upper intake levels (UL) for nutrients borrows heavily from risk assessment methods used by toxicologists. Empirical data are used to identify intake levels associated with adverse effects, and Uncertainty Factors (UF) are applied to establish ULs, which in turn inform public health decisions and standards. Use of UFs reflects lack of knowledge regarding the biological events that underlie response to the intake of a given nutrient, and also regarding the sources of variability in that response. In this paper, the Key Events Dose-Response Framework (…

Lake Utterslev is situated in a densely built-up area of Copenhagen, and is heavily eutrophicated from combined sewer overflows. At the same time the lake suffers from lack of water. Therefore, a 5,000 m2 vertical flow wetland system was constructed in 1998 to reduce the phosphorus discharge from combined sewer overflows without reducing the water supply to the lake. During dry periods the constructed wetland is used to remove phosphorus from the lake water. The system is designed as a 90 m diameter circular bed with a bed depth of c. 2 m. The system is isolated from the surroundings by a poly

Biomass waste-to-energy (BWtE) systems provide the opportunity to capture, recycle, and convert waste streams to value-added resources that can be redistributed. Adoption of BWtE systems can close nutrient loops, produce renewable energy, mitigate greenhouse gas emissions, and foster local economic and climate resilience. Here, we review anaerobic digestion, pyrolysis, and gasification as potential BWtE technology options to serve as part of a circular economy. Prioritizing local, context-specific solutions can provide environmental and societal benefits, driving the transition to a more susta

Variable phytoplankton resource demands can buffer productivity to climate-driven declines in nutrient supply, but the extent of this buffering depends on limits to cellular elemental plasticity. Elemental plasticity is driven by a combination of genomic adaptation and physiological regulation, but their mechanistic links remain unresolved. Here, we combine continuous culture experiments with proteomics and elemental analyses to determine how genomic diversity shapes nutrient stress plasticity in six strains of the globally distributed cyanobacterium Synechococcus. By maintaining fixed growth

Metabolic adaptation to both caloric excess and restriction promotes energy conservation by suppressing catabolic pathways via feedback mechanisms that remain incompletely defined. We identified TANK binding kinase 1 (TBK1) as a nutrient- and inflammation-responsive brake on AMPK signaling in adipocytes. Fasting or pharmacological AMPK activation induced Tbk1 transcription via a PGC1α/nuclear respiratory factor 1 axis, which, in turn, limited AMPK activity through a phosphorylation cascade to conserve energy. In obesity, this AMPK/TBK1 axis was disrupted due to chronically elevated basal TBK1,

It was previously observed that partial regrowth can be induced to begin in adult Drosophila limb by modulating nutrients. In this work, to further investigate the observation, we characterized the early cellular and tissue-level processes that are promoted by nutrient treatment after injury. We find that response to nutrient treatment can be readily identified within hours, by alteration in wound healing. Subsequently, at day-scale, dramatic reversal of large-scale tissue loss occurs in treated flies. Finally, at week-scale, tissue remodeling begins and a dome-shaped protrusion forms at the i…

This study aimed to evaluate the suitability of sea buckthorn by-products, including pomace without seeds (SBPW), pomace with seeds (SBPS), and leaves (SBL) as potential livestock feed ingredients. Proximate composition, amino acids, fatty acids, minerals, vitamins, and metabolizable energy (ME) were assessed and compared to the daily requirements of livestock, assuming an inclusion rate of 2.5% of dry matter intake in different animal species. SBPW exhibited the highest metabolizable energy (13.7-17 MJ/kg DM across species), exceeding 2.5% of daily requirements in most animal species, suggest

Climate-driven shifts in seasonal frost patterns raise important questions about their impact on food quality and resilience. Here, we show that a single 12-h frost event at harvest can enhance both the microbial and nutritional properties of fermented cabbage and carrots, two cold-tolerant crops widely grown in the U.S. Northeast. Using microbial amplicon and metagenomic sequencing, we found that frost exposure led to subtle but consistent changes in microbial composition, including greater abundance of cold-adapted taxa such as Leuconostoc and Debaryomyces. These changes corresponded to incr

BACKGROUND: Preterm infants frequently require human milk fortification to meet their unique nutrients requirements. How commercial fortifiers change essential macronutrients and micronutrients in donor human milk has not been well-studied.
METHODS: Our sampling frame included milk from approved United States milk bank donors (n = 400), measured for macronutrients, vitamins, and minerals, and used to produce 1000 pools of donor milk. Fortification ratios were computed to describe the extent that fortifiers changed donor milk composition (<100% indicates decreased; >100% indicates increased). …

Correlation analysis also revealed significant correlations between all nutrients (except potassium) and the carbon and water footprints of the dishes. Moreover, the NRF 9.3 scores of the dishes were negatively correlated with both carbon and water footprint.
CONCLUSION: The fact that main dishes have both a lower NRF 9.3 score …

BACKGROUND: Steaming reduces microbial content of hay but the effect of steaming on nutrient quality and the effects of storage after steaming on microbial content are incompletely known.
AIMS/OBJECTIVES: It was hypothesized that steamed hay can be stored for up to 24 h without an increase in microbial content and that steaming of hay favors the increase in measurable Maillard reaction products.
METHODS: Spoiled hay was steamed and then stored in hay nets, buckets or the hay steamer itself under summer and winter climate conditions. Microbial content was assessed by bacterial and fungal cult

Systemic nutrient sensing is a fundamental process that aligns nutrient availability with an organism's metabolic demands. This mini-review explores nutrient sensors in the intestine, pancreas, portal vein, and the brain-organs that detect and convey nutrient status to other tissues via neuronal and hormonal signaling. Unlike oral taste receptors that sense external nutrient inputs, these nutrient sensors monitor post ingestive levels of macronutrients (carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids) and micronutrients (vitamins and essential trace elements such as calcium, magnesium, and zinc) within th…

Yeast ethanol fermentation and growth are affected by environmental factors such as nutrients, pH, and temperature. Ethanol fermentation in yeast is typically accompanied by cell proliferation. Thus, the specific nutrients required for fermentation remain unclear. To determine nutrients required for fermentation, first a semi-synthetic medium with a small inoculum size (OD600 = 2) was used, and CO2 gas emissions were monitored. The addition of sodium aspartate (Asp) and MgSO4 to a medium containing 0.2 % yeast extract and 9.1 % glucose efficiently increased gas emissions. Further addition of K…

Plants commonly face abiotic stressors like drought, salinity, and limited nutrient availability which disrupt the homeostatic networks of mineral acquisition and hamper productivity. In this review we aim to clarify the molecular platforms by which plants sense and act in response to fluctuating availability of nitrogen and phosphorus under stress. Our data show that the dual-affinity nitrate transporter NRT1.1 functions as a sensor and transporter, controlling root architecture and downstream signaling through the TOR-NLP7-SnRK1 pathway to modulate nitrate homeostasis under water and nutrien

Chronic alcohol use has been attributed to the development of malnutrition. This is in part due to the inhibitory effect of ethanol on the absorption of vital nutrients, including glucose, amino acids, lipids, water, vitamins, and minerals within the small intestine. Recent advances in research, along with new cutting-edge technologies, have advanced our understanding of the mechanism of ethanol's effect on intestinal nutrient absorption at the brush border membrane (BBM) of the small intestine. However, further studies are needed to delineate how ethanol consumption could have an impact on al…

Hemipterans are known as hosts to bacterial or fungal symbionts that supplement their unbalanced diet with essential nutrients. Among them, scale insects (Coccomorpha) are characterized by a particularly large diversity of symbiotic systems. Here, using microscopic and genomic approaches, we functionally characterized the symbionts of two scale insects belonging to the Eriococcidae family, Acanthococcus aceris and Gossyparia spuria. These species host Burkholderia bacteria that are localized in the cytoplasm of the fat body cells. Metagenome sequencing revealed very similar and highly reduced …
