Primary eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders (EGIDs) are emerging chronic/remittent inflammatory diseases of unknown etiology, which may involve any part of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, in the absence of secondary causes of GI eosinophilia. Eosinophilic esophagitis is the prototype of eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders and is clinically characterized by symptoms related to esophageal inflammation and dysfunction. A few studies have assessed the nutritional status of patients with eosinophilic gastrointestinal disorders, showing conflicting results. This review summarizes the curren

Besides characteristic neurologic and musculoskeletal symptoms, children with mitochondrial dysfunction often present with feeding problems and failure to thrive. Substrate depletion for the respiratory chain has an effect on energy expenditure. Secondary mitochondrial dysfunction has been reported in severe chronic malnutrition. We evaluated the nutritional state, the growth parameters, and the metabolic condition in 172 children undergoing muscle biopsy for a suspected disorder of the oxidative phosphorylation system (OXPHOS). We performed dietary evaluation and initiated nutritional interve

In children, short-bowel syndrome (SBS) accounts for two-thirds of the cases of intestinal failure, and motility disorders and congenital mucosal diarrheal disorders account for the remaining one-third. Children with SBS are supported primarily by parenteral nutrition, which is the single-most important therapy contributing to their improved prognosis. More than 90% of children with SBS who are cared for at experienced intestinal rehabilitation programs survive, and roughly 60% to 70% undergo intestinal adaptation and achieve full enteral autonomy. This article focuses on the predictors of ped

OBJECTIVE: Hoarseness is often observed in patients with acute central nervous system (CNS) impairment. However, the vocal function is not routinely assessed. The purpose of this prospective study was to reveal the severity of dysphagia and dysphonia simultaneously during a bed side swallowing assessment in patients with CNS disorders.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective observational cohort study.
METHODS: The bed side evaluation of swallowing and vocal function was performed in 24 patients (aged 22-96 years; 14 male, 10 female) who were admitted to the Center for Neurology and Medical Science of out

Diabetic erectile dysfunction (DED) is a multifactor syndrome, which involves vascular disease, neuropathy, metabolic control, nutrition, endocrine disorders, psychogenic factors, and anti-diabetes drugs. Among all these factors, vascular disease plays a very important role. In the development of diabetic vasculopathy, some vasomotion factors and growth factors undergo conspicuous changes, which may be significantly correlated with the development of diabetic erectile dysfunction.

Hypophosphatemia with or without phosphorus depletion can be observed in various diseases--particularly diabetic ketoacidosis, respiratory alkalosis, alcoholism, parenteral nutrition and hyperalimentation--and may cause serious neurologic, muscular, and hematologic disorders. This review summarizes the knowledges about hypophosphatemia--etiological mechanisms, pathophysiology and therapeutic modalities--and suggests that some place be reserved for serum phosphate in systematic and emergency panels of blood tests.

INTRODUCTION: Hyperemesis gravidarum is a state of severe nausea and vomiting during pregnancy, leading to dehydration, electrolyte and acid-base disorders, malnutrition and weight loss (> 5%). The prevalence of hyperemesis gravidarum is 0.3-2.3% of all pregnancies.
OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the effectiveness of nutritional support in a case of a complicated hyperemesis gravidarum. A case of a 25 years old woman with hyperemesis gravidarum, who had weight loss of 17.7%, dehydration, electrolyte disorders and arrhythmias, managed with enteral and parenteral nutrition at home until week 26 of g

The provision of appropriate nutritional support is an essential part of the primary and adjunctive management of many gastrointestinal (GI) disorders in neonatology and pediatrics. Few conditions in neonatology pose as great a challenge as intestinal failure or short bowel syndrome (SBS). The latter, SBS, is a complex disorder affecting normal intestinal physiology with nutritional, metabolic and infectious consequences. It is a result of the alteration of intestinal digestion and absorption following extensive bowel resection. Medical management of SBS is a very labor-intensive problem. Nutr

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a debilitating and often refractory eating disorder that is unique among psychiatric disorders insofar as nutrition is key to recovery. Treatment options and efficacy are limited with no approved medications for AN. Genetic studies are clarifying the etiology of AN, with the goal of eventually informing the development of innovative personalized pharmacologic, nutritional, microbial, and behavioral interventions. We present the current state of genome-wide and epigenome-wide association studies, gut microbiome research, and functional genomics investigations and discus

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that can affect all aspects of life, including nutrition. This case reports a patient with ASD in which gingival bleeding was the key finding that led to a diagnosis of scurvy. The literature review discusses behavioral food aversions in patients with ASD that lead to significant nutritional deficiencies, such as scurvy. Through this case report, the objective is to raise clinical awareness to consider relatively rare diseases in patients with ASD who have atypical feeding patterns.

The paper assesses the traditional and current methods in the organization of providing workers with medical and prophylactic products. It raises the question as to the value of milk as a detoxicant, an antidote, that aids in eliminating harmful substances from the organism of workers who are in contact with noxious occupational factors. Consideration of this issue may be presently regarded as actually urgent and timely since present-day developments in preventive nutrition of the population provide a possibility of using foods (beverages) that are of great rational benefit to the health of th

Present in 85-90% of patients, pancreatic exocrine insufficiency contributes to growth retardation and delayed puberty in the child, and low weight in the adult. The incidence of hepatic disease varies according to whether one considers the discovery of histological abnormalities at autopsy of patients who have died from other complications (20-70%) or the presence of a focal or multilobular biliary cirrhosis complicated or not by portal hypertension (2-10%). Gastro-oesophageal reflux can contribute to the degradation of the nutritional state and exacerbate the respiratory symptomatology. All

Resistance or strength exercise training may help reverse the malnutrition common among patients in chronic renal failure and delay the progression of renal disease. Resistance training is characterized by resisting, lifting, and lowering weights. It results in muscle mass accretion, improved physical function, and slowed progression of muscle wasting. Resistance exercise training for a period of 8 to 12 weeks results in significant increases in muscle mass, muscle strength, and muscle function in frail "Работает" elderly individuals as well as in specific patient populations. A patient is described who developed pancytopenia several months after home intravenous nutrition (IVN) was started following a major small bowel resection for volvulus. In the post-operative period his weight fell by about 15 kg to 45 kg. Bone marrow aspiration and leucokinetic studies were carried out which suggested that bone marrow failure was the cause of this patient's haematological abnormalities. Five of the 16 patients at St Mark's Hospital who are receiving home IVN were noted to have had transient neutropenia. In 3 of these patients significant weight loss was also noted in the few

Wasting of muscle and a negative nitrogen balance are obvious effects of malnutrition, and have led to the use of anthropometric measurements and nitrogen balance for its assessment. A positive nitrogen balance and an increase in limb muscle circumference are believed to be solid indices of the beneficial effects of nutritional support. In experiments with growing rats and in young children, nitrogen retention and growth are recognized to be the desirable effects of optimal nutritional intake. This concept has been applied to malnourished adult humans (nongrowing) who have been considered pote

A patient with multiple enteric fistulae, after months of parenteral hyperalimentation, developed, severe depression accompanied by delirium, dermatitis, pallor, paresthesia, nausea, vomiting, anorexia, and headaches. His symptoms improved after treatment with parenteral biotin. Biotin-deficiency should be suspected in patients on hyperalimentation (without biotin supplementation) who develop similar symptoms.

Overt malnutrition in children with cancer is seen with surprising frequency: up to 37.5% in a group of patients with disease metastatic to or from bone, and 17.5% in a group of newly diagnosed patients with abdominal or pelvic tumors. It appears more frequent in some cancers. e.g., Ewing's sarcoma, than in others, e.g., osteosarcoma. Criteria for diagnosis of overt malnutrition are applicable to the child with cancer. Such overt malnutrition can be successfully and safely treated with intravenous hyperalimentation (IVH). Marginal malnutrition is a state that can be inferred from clinical beha
