UNLABELLED: Limited evidence is available to acknowledge the association between opium use and liver cancer. In a case-control study, we recruited 117 cases of primary liver cancer (PLC) and 234 age and sex-matched neighborhood controls from 2016 to 2018. We calculated odds ratios (OR) for opium use and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI), using conditional logistic regressions. The Opium Wars of 1839-1843 and 1856-1860 revealed the devastating effects of narcotic addiction on the health of the body politic of China. The defeated Qing dynasty lost effective sovereignty to the British, leaving it helpless against more than 100 years of exploitation by the European powers, the United States, and Japan. Today we see the same risk posed by prescription narcotics and illegal opioids imported from China that can be seen as retribution for the "Century of Humiliation" nearly two centuries ago.

Opium sale is prohibited in Iran, and sellers mix it with lead to increase the weight. Herein, we describe neuromuscular findings in nine patients who developed lead poisoning due to opium/drug consumption. The mean age of patients was 53±3.5 years and their mean blood lead level was 122.6±20.8μg/dL.
