A prospective safety and effectiveness study using endovenous laser ablation with a 400-μm optical fiber for the treatment of pathologic perforator veins in patients with advanced venous disease (SeCure trial).

BACKGROUND: Treatment of pathologic perforator veins (PPVs) can shorten time to healing and reduce recurrence of ulcers in patients with advanced venous disease. Because of limited clinical evidence and device options, widespread adoption of PPV treatment is controversial. The objective of this study was to evaluate the safety and efficacy of endovenous laser therapy using a 400-μm optical fiber to treat PPVs. METHODS: This study was a single-arm, prospective, seven-center, nonblinded clinical study examining patients with advanced skin changes or healed or active ulceration (Clinical, Etiolo

Combination of solid phase extraction and dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction for separation/preconcentration of ultra trace amounts of uranium prior to its fiber optic-linear array spectrophotometry determination.

A simple and sensitive method for the separation and preconcentration of the ultra trace amounts of uranium and its determination by spectrophotometry was developed. The method is based on the combination of solid phase extraction and dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction. Thus, by passing the sample through the basic alumina column, the uranyl ion and some cations are separated from the sample matrix. The retained uranyl ion along with the cations are eluted with 5 mL of nitric acid (2 mol L(-1)) and after neutralization of the eluent, the extracted uranyl ion is converted to its anionic b

Correlation of visual field deficits and q-ball high-resolution fiber tractography of the optic radiation for adjacently located intracerebral lesions: preliminary results from a single-center prospective study.

Visual field deficits (VFDs) are common in patients with temporal and occipital lobe lesions. Diffusion tensor fiber tractography (DTI-FT) is widely used for surgery planning to reduce VFDs. Q-ball high-resolution fiber tractography (QBI-HRFT) improves upon DTI. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of DTI-FT and QBI-HRFT for surgery planning near the optic radiation (OR) as well as the correlation between VFDs, the nearest distance from the lesion to the OR fiber bundle (nD-LOR), and the lesion volume (LV). This ongoing prospective clinical trial collects clinical and imaging data of

Measurement of corneal thickness, optic nerve sheath diameter and retinal nerve fiber layer as potential new non-invasive methods in assessing a risk of cerebral edema in type 1 diabetes in children.

AIMS: Some patients with diabetic ketoacidosis develop cerebral edema (CE) in the course of type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1D), which may result in central nervous system disorders and high mortality. The imperfection of existing neuroimaging techniques for early recognition of CE forces us to search for the new and non-invasive methods. The aim of the study was to assess the usefulness of new methods (pachymetry, transorbital ultrasonography-USG, optical coherence tomography-OCT study) in the assessment of the risk of CE occurrence in children with newly diagnosed T1D. METHODS: The study group i

Dexmedetomidine for an awake fiber-optic intubation of a parturient with Klippel-Feil syndrome, Type I Arnold Chiari malformation and status post released tethered spinal cord presenting for repeat cesarean section.

Patients with Klippel-Feil Syndrome (KFS) have congenital fusion of their cervical vertebrae due to a failure in the normal segmentation of the cervical vertebrae during the early weeks of gestation and also have myriad of other associated anomalies. Because of limited neck mobility, airway management in these patients can be a challenge for the anesthesiologist. We describe a unique case in which a dexmedetomidine infusion was used as sedation for an awake fiber-optic intubation in a parturient with Klippel-Feil Syndrome, who presented for elective cesarean delivery. A 36-year-old female, G2P

Clinical comparison study between a newly developed optical-based fractional flow reserve device and the conventional fractional flow reserve device.

BACKGROUND: Fractional flow reserve (FFR) measurement is the gold standard for identifying the functional severity of coronary artery disease. Although we can use newly developed pressure wires with optical fibers are now available, their safety and accuracy for FFR measurement are not clear. Therefore, we planned a clinical comparison study between pressure wires with optical fibers and the conventional FFR device. METHODS: We prospectively enrolled 51 patients (51 lesions) with intermediate coronary artery stenosis. For these lesions, FFR measurements with pressure wires with optical fibers…

Decreases in ganglion cell layer and inner plexiform layer volumes correlate better with disease severity in schizophrenia patients than retinal nerve fiber layer thickness: Findings from spectral optic coherence tomography.

BACKGROUND: Optic coherence tomography (OCT) is a new, contactless and fast neuroimaging method. Previous studies have observed thinning of the retinal nerve fibre layer (RNFL) in many neurodegenerative diseases, and researchers have suggested that correlations exist between the thinning of the RNFL and the neurodegeneration detected with other imaging methods or the severity of illness. More recently, OCT has been used in patients with schizophrenia. RNFL thinning has also been detected in these patients. With more sophisticated devices, segmentation of the retina and measurements of the gang
