Maternal pre-pregnancy overweight status and obesity as risk factors for cesarean delivery.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the extent to which, if at all, maternal pre-pregnancy adiposity and other anthropometric factors are related to ris … models. RESULTS: The proportion of cesarean deliveries in this population was 26%. Women who were overweight (BMI 25.00-29.99 kg/m2) were twice as likely to deliver their infants by cesarean section as lean women (BMI<20.00 kg/m2) (RR=2.09; 95% CI 1.27-3.42). Obese women (BMI>or=30.00 kg/m2) experienced a three-fold increase in risk of cesarean delivery wh …

Serum leptin levels in normal-weight and overweight women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

The aim of this study was to evaluate serum leptin levels in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and in controls with normal or abno … other measures of insulin sensitivity. Our results showed that serum leptin levels in a subgroup of overweight women with PCOS and insulin resistance were higher than those expected for their BMI, and therefore leptin might interfere in the pathogenesis of this syndrome.

Exercise decreases plasma total homocysteine in overweight young women with polycystic ovary syndrome.

Women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have a clustering of cardiovascular risk factors, such as obesity, lipid abnormalities, impaired glucose tolerance, insulin resistance, and hypertension. Exercise is reported to lower the incidence of cardiac events. The effect of exercise on plasma homocysteine concentrations, an independent cardiovascular risk factor, has not been previously reported in women with PCOS. We examined the effects of exercise on plasma total homocysteine concentrations in young overweight or obese PCOS women [age (mean +/- SD), 30.6 +/- 6.6 yr; body mass index, 35.49 +…

Quality of life and overweight: the obesity related well-being (Orwell 97) questionnaire.

The development and validation of a self-reported measure of obesity-related quality of life, the Obesity Related Well-Being (ORWELL 97), were undertaken to examine the intensity and the subjective relevance of physical and psychosocial distress. The questionnaire was validated in a sample of 147 obese patients (99 females, 48 males). The Eating Disorder Examination 12.0D interview, a structured diagnostic interview for DSM-III-R (DSM-IV criteria for binge eating disorder), Beck Depression Inventory, Binge Eating Scale, and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory 1 and 2 scales were also applied. Overweight among Mexican Americans and its relationship to life style behavioral risk factors.

The hypothesis positing differences between Mexican Americans and whites regarding attitudes and behaviors concerning obesity and other health issues was tested. A random sample of 1171 whites and 155 Mexican Americans aged 18 to 65 was selected. Two analyses were carried out. First, overweight Mexican Americans were compared with overweight whites. Second, overweight individuals were compared with normal weight counterparts within each ethnic group. Differences between overweight Mexican Americans and overweight whites disappeared after adjusting for the effects of sex, income, educational st…

Insights into diet, psychological distress, and personality traits among patients with lower-extremity lymphedema and overweight/obesity in comparison to patients with lifestyle-induced overweight/obesity and patients with normal body weight.

Obesity is a leading cause of cardiovascular diseases. There are significant and mutual associations between lymphatic dysfunction and obesity. This case-control study aimed to compare nutrient intake, depressive symptoms, and Eysenck's personality traits in patients with lower extremity lymphedema and overweight/obesity (n = 34) in comparison to patients with lifestyle-induced overweight/obesity (n = 30) and patients with normal body weight (n = 30). The study groups were evaluated using the Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ), Beck Depression Inventory-II, and Eysenck Personality Questionnair…

Association between Low carbohydrate diet with anthropometric indexes among overweight and obese women.

BACKGROUND: The important association between Low-Carbohydrate Diets (LCD), lipid and glycemic control, and weight loss has been well-depicted in previous research. However, the relationship between LCD, lipid and glycemic profiles, and new anthropometric markers such as the a-Body Shape Index (ABSI) and the Obesity Degree (OD) has not been established. Therefore, this cross-sectional study aimed to investigate the relationship between LCD, lipid, and glycemic profiles, with the ABSI and the OD in overweight and obese women. METHODS: A cohort of 290 overweight and obese women (body mass index…

Overweight and obesity induce Toll-like receptor 2-induced Type I IFN signaling.

Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) is an innate immune receptor linked to obesity primarily via NF-κB activation. Using a mouse model of overnutrition and in vitro TLR2 stimulation of human peripheral blood mononuclear cells, we show that lipids, advanced glycation end products, and low-density lipoproteins extend TLR2 signaling beyond NF-κB to promote Type I IFN production and signaling, establishing the relevance of this pathway to human obesity. This response was abolished by pharmacologic inhibition of the receptor for advanced glycation end products, which recognizes glycated proteins and lipids

Metabolic Phenotype-Stratified Associations Between Obesity/Overweight and Mortality in Peritoneal Dialysis Patients.

BACKGROUND: Metabolic abnormalities and obesity/overweight are prevalent in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, and their interplay may significantly impact clinical outcomes. This study aimed to investigate the association between metabolic phenotypes (stratified by body mass index [BMI] and metabolic status) and all-cause mortality in PD patients. METHODS: This multicenter cohort study was conducted from January 1, 2001, to May 31, 2023. Participants were categorized into four metabolic phenotypes based on their BMI and metabolic status: Metabolically Healthy Overweight/Obesity (MHO), Metabo…

Urinary metabolomic profiling reveals distinct metabolic characteristics in children with overweight and obesity.

BACKGROUND: Childhood obesity is a critical global public health problem. Untargeted metabolomics can identify metabolic alterations associated with childhood obesity, but pediatric evidence remains limited. This study characterized urinary metabolic profiles associated with overweight and obesity in children. METHODS: A total of 120 first-grade primary school children were selected. The population comprised 40 children with normal weight, 40 children with overweight, and 40 children with obesity, with equal sex distribution in each group. Urinary metabolic profiles were analyzed using liquid…

Protective effect of overweight status in aortic valve surgery: revisiting the obesity paradox.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relationship between body mass index (BMI) and postoperative mortality in patients undergoing aortic valve surgery, with an emphasis on exploring the presence and limits of the "obesity paradox", the phenomenon wherein overweight and mildly obese patients may experience lower mortality despite obesity's general association with adverse health outcomes. METHODS: The Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) database was used to obtain data from adult patients who underwent aortic valve surgery between 2016 and 2020. BMI categories, as well as comorbidities, were identifi…

Associations of work-related extended availability with overweight and obesity among Chinese workers.

OBJECTIVE: Work-related extended availability (WREA) has become an increasingly salient feature of the contemporary labor market and may be associated with workers' health outcomes. Nevertheless, the associations of WREA with overweight and obesity remain insufficiently explored. This study aimed to examine the associations of WREA with overweight and obesity among Chinese workers. METHODS: Using data from the 2020 and 2022 waves of the China Family Panel Studies, we constructed an analytical sample of 16,969 observations and employed ordered logistic regression models (ologit) to examine the…

Virtually delivered lifestyle interventions for overweight and obese pregnant people: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Gestational weight gain (GWG) impacts both foetal and maternal health outcomes, with excessive GWG in overweight and obese people further increasing the risk of complications for this population. Lifestyle changes including consuming a healthy diet and physical activity are core strategies for management. Since 2020 and the emergence of the COVID-19 pandemic, use of telehealth has increased; however, little is known about the effectiveness of virtually delivered strategies for maintaining healthy gestational weight during pregnancy. OBJECTIVES: To describe the effect of virtually …

Plant-Based Diet Mitigated the Risk of Chronic Kidney Disease in Overweight Individuals.

INTRODUCTION: Being overweight, with a body mass index (BMI) ≥25, is associated with multiple comorbidities, including chronic kidney disease (CKD). A plant-based diet, such as a vegetarian or lacto-ovo vegetarian diet, serves as a preventive strategy for CKD in patients. We hypothesized that a vegetarian diet lowers the occurrence of CKD in overweight subjects. METHODS: The retrospective study was performed in Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital by a self-paid health exam. Age younger than 40 years old and the subjects without sufficient biochemical or hematologic results were excluded. The incidence of…
