Land use regression (LUR) models are often used to predict long-term average concentrations of air pollutants. Little is known how well LUR models predict personal exposure. In this study, the agreement of LUR models with measured personal exposure was assessed. The measured components were particulate matter with a diameter smaller than 2.5 μm (PM2.5), soot (reflectance of PM2.5), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). In Helsinki, Utrecht, and Barcelona, 15 volunteers (from semiurban, urban background, and traffic sites) followed prescribed time activity patterns. Per participant…

Two thermodynamic equilibrium models were applied to estimate changes in mean airborne fine particle (PM2.5) mass concentrations that could result from changes in ambient concentrations of sulfate, nitric acid, or ammonia in the southeastern United States, the midwestern United States, and central California. Pronounced regional differences were found. Southeastern sites exhibited the lowest current mean concentrations of nitrate, and the smallest predicted responses of PM2.5 nitrate and mass concentrations to reductions of nitric acid, which is the principal reaction product of the oxidation

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is linked to metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), yet responsible chemical constituents and the biological basis of susceptibility remain unclear, limiting source-targeted regulation and precision prevention in vulnerable populations. We examined PM2.5 components - liver outcomes associations in youth, assessed susceptibility by PNPLA3 genotype (the strongest known MASLD genetic determinant), and evaluated genotype-specific metabolic mediation in two independent cohorts.
METHODS: Baseline data from 113…

Precipitation scavenging is an important sink for particulate matter (PM) and can therefore have direct consequences for human and ecosystem health. Controlled experiments and modeling studies quantifying precipitation-driven removal have been conducted in the past, but the literature lacks large-scale observational-based estimates of precipitation influence on PM concentrations. This gap has become more important as wildfire smoke now contributes a growing share of PM pollution across the United States, and climate change drives rainfall pattern shifts. We analyzed hourly PM2.5 and PM10 obser…

Particulate matter 2.5 (PM2.5) is a major environmental pollutant associated with various systemic disorders, including ocular diseases. Although PM2.5 is known to reach retinal tissues, its effects on retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells and the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. In this study, we investigated the effects of PM2.5 exposure on RPE cells using both conventional two-dimensional cultures and a three-dimensional spheroid model, with a focus on hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α)-associated signaling, autophagy, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). PM2…

Evidence regarding the prognostic relevance of long-term particulate matter exposure among patients with gastric cancer remains limited. We evaluated the associations between historical pre-index particulate matter exposure and subsequent mortality and estimated model-based population-attributable fractions (PAFs) under hypothetical lower historical exposure distributions. We conducted a hospital-based cohort study of 4441 patients with stage I-III gastric cancer who underwent radical surgery between 2012 and 2022 in Zhejiang, China. Residential exposures to fine particulate matter (PM2.5), in…

Particulate matter (PM) exposure is a leading risk factor for cardiovascular and respiratory morbidity and mortality across the world. While arid and semi-arid regions account for more than 40% of terrestrial land, there is a paucity of research investigating the relationship between PM exposure and health outcomes or how risk varies across different populations specific to these climate regions. To address this, we performed a scoping review to assess the extent of literature in arid and semi-arid regions that consider such morbidity and mortality risks from short-term PM exposure. Our review…

Air pollutants can cause respiratory diseases, highlighting the need for effective preventive and therapeutic strategies. We investigated the protective effects of heat-killed Lacticaseibacillus paracasei ATG-E1 against particulate matter plus diesel exhaust particle (PM10D)-induced airway inflammation. BALB/c mice were intranasally injected with PM10D and treated with heat-killed L. paracasei ATG-E1 via oral gavage for 5 days. In the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) and lungs, inflammatory mediators, immune cell subtypes, and histological changes were analyzed, while gut microbiota composi…

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological evidence increasingly substantiates a correlation between chronic exposure to airborne environmental pollutants—specifically fine particulate matter (PM₂.₅) and diesel exhaust particles—and the prevalence of neurological disorders. While the respiratory consequences of these exposures are well-documented, the mechanisms by which pulmonary distress communicates pathogenic signals to the central nervous system remain complex and multifaceted. SCOPE & REVIEW: This review explores the "Lung-Brain Axis" as a critical conduit for neurotoxicity. We synthesize current findi…

Older people are considered more vulnerable to particulate matter (PM) exposure in terms of mortality risk. However, little is known about the associations among the oldest-old people in the era of rapid ageing. Thus, the objective of this study was to estimate the associations between long-term exposure to PM and the risk of mortality from multiple causes among the oldest-old people (aged over 80). In total, all-cause mortality and mortality from eight broad and 23 specific causes were estimated on the basis of 7-year cohort data for almost 10 thousand oldest-old people in China. Moreover, ti…

Particulate matter (PM) is a complex mixture of particles with different adverse effects on health, especially on the cardiovascular (CV) risk and disease (e.g., increased risk of total and CV mortality, ischemic heart disease, heart failure, stroke, hypertension, dyslipidemia and type 2 diabetes). Since oxidative stress (OS) and inflammation are the main key mechanisms by which PM exerted its biological effects on health, several oxidative and inflammatory-related biomarkers have been measured and associated with PM; abnormalities in these parameters in relation to PM highlight the key role o…

The synergistic reduction of air pollutants and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions is a key component in achieving China's strategy of pollution and carbon reduction. This study quantitatively evaluates the spatiotemporal linkages between PM2.5 and CO2 emissions, as well as the benefits of sustained synergistic control, across over 360 Chinese cities from 2005 to 2020. We employed spatiotemporal analysis, coupled coordinateness modeling, the Hurst index, and generalized linear mixed modeling (GLMM). The results indicate that PM2.5 concentrations decreased at an annual rate of 1.5 μg/m³/year from 2

Extrinsic skin aging is driven by environmental factors, including ultraviolet (UV) radiation and air pollution. While melanocytes serve as key protectors against UV-induced damage, their role in aging, particularly through the process of senescence, remains underexplored. Here, we exposed human neonatal melanocytes and ex vivo skin explants to UV (UVA + UVB), urban particulate matter (UPM), and their combination (UV + UPM) to assess the effects on melanocyte function and skin aging. We demonstrate that combined UV + UPM exposure triggers oxidative stress, mitochondrial and DNA damage, senesce…

Heavy metals (HMs) bonded to PM (Particulate Matter) are a significant component of rural air pollution. They're primarily released from fossil fuel combustion and the operational decay of automobiles, leading to their considerable presence in roadway dust. This study aims to examine the concentration and seasonal effects on HM emissions in rural air. The pooled mean concentrations for As (7.81 ng m-³), Cd (4.42 ng m-³), and Pb (60.97 ng m-³) were statistically significant. Pb concentrations were exceptionally high in some rural areas of China, with mean values over 500 ng m-³ reported in two …

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have implicated exposure to PM₂.₅ in the development of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB); however, the key constituents driving this effect have not been clearly identified.
METHODS: A time-series analysis spanning 2019 to 2023 was performed across several centers in Beijing to assess the links between major PM2.5 constituents and PTB risk. The effects of five specific components-namely organic matter, black carbon, nitrate, sulfate, and ammonium-were evaluated to pinpoint the most influential factors.
RESULTS: All five examined components demonstrated signifi

The composition of particulate matter (PM) in poultry farms differs significantly from that of atmospheric PM as there is a higher concentration of microbes on farms. To assess the health effects of PM from poultry farms on pregnant animals, we collected PM from duck houses using a particulate sampler, processed it via centrifugation and vacuum concentration, and subsequently exposed the mice to airborne PM at 0.48 mg/m3 (i.e., low concentration group) and 1.92 mg/m3 (i.e., high concentration group) on the fifth day of pregnancy. After exposure until the twentieth day of pregnancy or spontaneo…

BACKGROUND: Exposure to PM2.5 has been implicated in a range of detrimental health effects, particularly affecting the respiratory system. However, the precise underlying mechanisms remain elusive.
METHODS: To address this objective, we collected ambient PM2.5 and administered intranasal challenges to mice, followed by single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) to unravel the heterogeneity of neutrophils and unveil their gene expression profiles. Flow cytometry and immunofluorescence staining were subsequently conducted to validate the obtained results. Furthermore, we assessed the phagocytic pot
