The resistance to anti-microbial agents of bacteria isolated from pathological conditions of birds in Victoria, 1978 to 1983, was determined for isolates of Escherichia coli, Salmonella species, Staphylococcus aureus, Pasteurella multocida, P. anatipestifer, Yersinia pseudotuberculosis and Haemophilus paragallinarum. The isolates of E. coli had a high prevalence of resistance to tetracycline and sulphonamides, and a lower prevalence of resistance to furazolidone and sulphamethoxazole-trimethoprim. The isolates of Salmonella spp commonly had resistance to tetracycline, sulphonamides, furazolido…

The Spanish ibex (Capra pyrenaica hispanica) population of southern Spain was surveyed for potential pathogens associated with the conjuncti … ng a higher frequency of isolation in young animals. With Escherichia coli, Mannheimia haemolytica, Pasteurella multocida biotype A, and Staphylococcus aureus, significantly higher isolation rates were associated with adults. The isolation frequency for E. coli was higher in females, whereas Moraxella bovis isolations were mostly associated with males. The presence of …

Vaccine-related fowl cholera must be considered when flock mortality increases after use of a live Pasteurella multocida vaccine product. All registered live vaccines serotype as Heddleston 3,4; however, in some regions this is also the most common serotype of outbreak isolates in broiler breeders and turkeys. Therefore, serotyping may not be useful for diagnosing vaccine-related fowl cholera. This project sought to apply a vaccine-specific test to differentiate vaccine-related disease from naturally occurring outbreaks. Results indicate that vaccine strains were commonly isolated from broiler…

Data were collected on anti-microbial usage and health problems, in beef feedlot calves. Although the association between them was not significant, many feedlot owners did not use recommended dosages or duration of treatment and this may have led to a reduced recovery rate.Injectable tetracyclines were the most frequent antimicrobial for primary treatment of sick calves; whereas chloramphenicol was selected most frequently when the primary treatment appeared to be ineffective. Treatment with anti-microbials reduced the likelihood of isolating both Pasteurella multocida and Haemophilus somnus. …

Epidemiological surveys enable to know better the aetiology of respiratory diseases. The surveys carried out in slaughter-houses in Brittany (France) in 1980 and 1981, show a worrying situation concerning porcine respiratory diseases. Microbiological studies brought out the preponderance of the isolation of Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae, Pasteurella multocida, Bordetella bronchiseptica, Streptococcus suis and Actinobacillus suis. Some patterns of experimental infection with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae and Bordetella bronchiseptica are exposed.

Septicemia is an unwholesome condition diagnosed during postmortem inspection in poultry slaughter establishments on the basis of macroscopic lesions. Early identification of septicemia has important public health implications. In this study, Pasteurella multocida, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus septicemia were induced in broilers in order to determine if lesions of acute septicemia can be grossly detected in the visceral organs of broiler carcasses prior to the development of changes in the skeletal muscle. Increased spleen and liver weights were observed during the acute phase o…

Hemorrhagic septicemia-causing strains of Pasteurella multocida are endemic in Asia and Africa, but naturally occurring hemorrhagic septicemia has not been described in livestock in the United States since 1993. There are 5 capsular types of P. multocida: A, B, D, E, and F. Two capsular types (B, E) cause hemorrhagic septicemia, whereas capsular types A and, to a lesser extent, D are associated with enzootic bovine pneumonia. Here we describe 2 naturally occurring cases of hemorrhagic septicemia caused by P. multocida capsular type B:3,4 in the United States, including molecular characterizati…

The reduced species richness typical of oceanic islands provides an interesting environmental setup to examine in natura the epidemiological dynamics of infectious agents with potential implications for public health and/or conservation. On Amsterdam Island (Indian Ocean), recurrent die-offs of Indian yellow-nosed albatross (Thalassarche carteri) nestlings have been attributed to avian cholera, caused by the bacterium Pasteurella multocida. In order to help implementing efficient measures for the control of this disease, it is critical to better understand the local epidemiology of P. multocid…

We investigated three bovine respiratory pathobionts in healthy cattle using qPCR optimised and validated to quantify Histophilus somni, Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella multocida over a wide dynamic range. A longitudinal study was conducted to investigate the carriage and density of these bacteria in the nasal passages of healthy beef calves (N = 60) housed over winter in an experimental farm setting. The three pathobiont species exhibited remarkably different carriage rates and density profiles. At housing, high carriage rates were observed for P. multocida (95%), and H. somni (75%), w…

Hemorrhagic septicemia (HS), an acute, fatal and septicemic disease of cattle and buffaloes caused by Pasteurella multocida, is important in tropical regions of the world, especially in African and Asian countries. The prevalence of disease has been well documented with predominant isolation of P. multocida serotypes B:2 and E:2. Conventional methods of identification such as serotyping, biotyping, antibiogram determination and pathogenicity as well as molecular methods (P. multocida-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR), a serogroup B-specific PCR assay, multiplex capsular typing system an…

A histomorphometric and physiopathological study was made of the lung parenchyma of Belgian White SPF rabbits infected experimentally with Pasteurella multocida type A. Symptoms observed were characteristic of the acute respiratory syndrome. Mean serum cortisol concentration and rectal temperature increased in all experimental groups. Histopathological changes included alveolitis and leukocytic bronchitis. Changes in alveolar and bronchial cytoarchitecture were attributed to the degeneration and necrosis of constituent epithelial cells.

Live fowl cholera vaccine administered in drinking water induced immunity in young turkeys against a challenge of a different immunogenic type of Pasteurella multocida; this is referred to as cross-immunity. Serum from the vaccinated birds induced passive cross-immunity in chicks and turkeys; this demonstrated that the cross-immunity induced with the drinking water vaccine was associated with the humoral system. Results of serologic tests with agar grown P. multocida indicate that agglutinins and precipitins are not associated with the induced cross-immunity. A live culture of P. multodica pre…

Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an effective modality for renal replacement therapy. A serious complication that can arise from PD is peritonitis. Over the last few decades, there have been cases of PD-related peritonitis secondary to Pasteurella multocida infections. We present the case of a 44-year-old female who presented to the emergency department with a one-day history of abdominal pain and cloudy peritoneal fluid on evaluation. Along with her physical examination findings, laboratory results of the peritoneal fluid demonstrated elevated white blood cells and neutrophils, characteristic of p…

Ethiopia, with an estimated chicken population of 17 million, serves as a source of high-quality animal protein, helping to reduce malnutrition, improve nutritional status, and provide food and food products. However, Ethiopia has not fully leveraged the value of chicken production due to various bacterial diseases, with fowl cholera (FC) being the most common. Therefore, the objective of this review is to highlight the current trends in the diagnosis of FC in chickens and asses its phenotypic drug resistance patterns in Gondar City. FC is an infectious disease caused by Pasteurella multocida …

A 5-month-old previously healthy female presented with a one-week history of fever and increased fussiness. Her presentation revealed an ill-appearing infant with an exam and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) studies concerning bacterial meningitis; CSF cultures grew Pasteurella multocida. Additionally, brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated cervical osteomyelitis. Despite multiple days of antibiotic therapy, she remained febrile with continued pain; MRI showed oligoarticular effusions, and aspiration of these joints yielded bloody aspirates. Evaluations for coagulopathy and immune comple…

Pradofloxacin is a novel third-generation oral veterinary fluoroquinolone with activity against Gram-positive aerobic bacteria and anaerobes (lower minimum inhibitory concentrations in vitro). It also has activity against other bacterial species, including Bartonella henselae, Pasteurella multocida, Bordetella bronchiseptica, extra-intestinal Escherichia coli, and some mycobacterial species. This review focuses on the current knowledge of the mechanism of action, adverse effects, clinical applications, and pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic properties of pradofloxacin in cats.

Lung inflammations in reindeer caused by Pasteurella multocida were reported from Scandinavian countries already at the beginning of this century. Several outbreaks have been recorded in reindeer herds in Norway. Observations made at the fall reindeer slaughtering, and in reindeer herds in Finnmark seem to indicate an endemic state of this infection with subclinical carriers. Predisposing factors and lowered specific immune status may probably play important roles when fatal outbreaks occur.

Experimental bovine pneumonic pasteurellosis was induced in beef calves by a transthoracic challenge exposure with Pasteurella haemolytica serotype 1 or P multocida type 3. Challenge exposure lesions were quantified by a lesion scoring system based on size and extension of lesions with larger scores assigned to the more severe lesions. Calves inoculated with live Pasteurella sp by aerosol or parenteral routes developed high serum antibody titers to the homologous organism, as determined by a quantitative fluorometric procedure. Mean lesion scores were approximately 2 to 20 times higher in cont

A total of 1300 birds in flock of breeder Pharaoh quail (Coturinix coturnix) experienced a moderate rate of mortality (13%) during a 7-day p … plasia, thymic cortical atrophy, subacute bacterial osteomyelitis, periarthritis, and crop mycosis. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from the joints of these birds and the isolates were serotype 3 x 4. These findings suggest that Pharaoh quail are susceptible to P. multocida and are likely to develop subacute to chronic fowl cholera.

Fourteen New Zealand White rabbits with respiratory signs of naturally occurring Pasteurella multocida infections were treated with either an injectable or water-soluble oral formulation of enrofloxacin. Antimicrobial efficacy was evaluated by scoring clinical signs in the rabbits and recovery of the organisms. Seven (87%) of eight rabbits treated with the injectable regimen (5 mg/kg every 12 hours for 14 days) became culture-negative with no clinical signs within 72 hours after initiation of treatment. Six rabbits treated with the oral formulation (200 mg/liter of drinking water for 14 days) …
