Pathology of non-infective gastritis.

The discovery of Helicobacter pylori and its intimate role in the development of the most common form of chronic gastritis has elicited a much-needed interest in non-neoplastic gastric pathology. This has been paralleled by an increase in upper endoscopic examinations, which allow recognition of novel patterns and distribution of mucosal injury. Numerous attempts at classification have been made, most based on the acuteness or chronicity of gastric mucosal injury. In this review, we will not offer a new classification but present a detailed description of the major clinicopathological entities…

[Bloch-Sulzberg syndrome in pathology].

The authors present some pathological findings in the skin and hair of the child affected by rather rare Bloch-Sulzberg syndrome manifested in incontinentia pigmenti, followed for 10 years. In this work are presented also some recent data about pathogenesis of the disease with X-chromosome dominant heredity, primary of neuroectodermal origincaused by mutation of nuclear factor kappa-B of essential modulator (NEMO) of the gene (chromosomal locus Xq28).

[Pathology of the cerebellopontine angle].

The pathology of the cistern of the cerebellopontine angle is primarily that of the nervous and vascular structures that it contains and of the meninges that line it. Knowledge of its anatomy makes it possible to understand and search for a rare pathology, the hemifacial spasm, due to a conflict between the facial nerve and the vertebral artery and the posterior inferior cerbellerar artery. However, the pathology of the cerebellopontine angle remains especially tumoral. Imaging should not only make the diagnosis but also make an exhaustive, pretherapy, and accurate assessment of the three main…

Neonatal morbidity and placental pathology.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the association between gestational age, placental pathology and outcome among preterm births. METHODS: Medical records and placental pathology results of 165 preterm infants (gestational age pound 34 weeks) were used to analyze the development of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH), bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), retinopathy of prematurity (ROP), patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) and sepsis, in association with placental findings in the gestational age categories of 22-27 (n=71) and 28-33 (n=93) weeks. RESULTS: Significant differences were found in placental findings…

Placental pathology and cerebral palsy.

Recent classification systems of cerebral palsy call for an assessment of the timing and etiology of brain injury. The placenta is an underused resource for addressing these important questions. An expert assessment of the placental pathology can provide temporally and mechanistically specific data not available from any other source. Key concepts for an understanding of the role of placental pathology are the "sentinel lesion," the high prevalence of thromboinflammatory lesions affecting large fetal placental vessels, the significance of underlying placental reserve, and the realization that …

[Pathology of the ocular surface].

The ocular surface is a new concept including the cornea, the conjunctiva, the lids and the lachrymal tear film in a new approach as an anatomic, physiologic and physiopathologic entity. The goal of the ocular surface, in a functional approach, is the maintenance of the corneal transparency. Ocular surface diseases are very frequent with numerous aspects and aetiologies and with no specificity for functional or clinical signs, particularly in chronical forms. Inflammation is most frequently associated in chronical diseases, subclinically as in keratoconjunctivitis sicca or, predominantly in al

Pathology of the gastroesophageal junction.

The gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) is a poorly defined anatomic area that represents the junction etween the distal esophagus and the proximal stomach (cardia). The true anatomic GEJ corresponds to the most proximal aspect of the gastric folds, which represents an endoscopically apparent transition oint in most individuals. Many, if not most, adults, particularly those with either physiologic or logic GERD, have a proximally displaced Z-line indicating that the histologic squamocolumnar nction (SCJ) is located above the anatomic GEJ. The histologic characteristics of short segments of columna

Pathology of upper gastrointestinal malignancies.

This review describes the most important macroscopic, histological, and molecular biological features of carcinomas of the esophagus, the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ), and the stomach. The three most frequent histological subtypes of upper GI tract carcinoma, ie, adenocarcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, and small cell carcinoma, are considered. Important histological classifications of upper GI tract adenocarcinomas such as Lauren's classification and the World Health Organization (WHO) classification, as well as rare histological variants of esophageal and gastric cancer, are described. Placental pathology in fetal thrombophilia.

The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that placental vascular lesions of the fetal circulation are caused by fetal thrombophilic mutations. The study included 64 newborns of women with one or more of the following pregnancy complications: preeclampsia, placental abruption, and intrauterine growth restriction. The most prevalent inherited thrombophilias--factor V Leiden, factor II (prothrombin) G20210A, and homozygosity for methyltetrahydrofolate reductase C677T--were examined in maternal blood and fetal umbilical cord blood. One pathologist reviewed all of the slides for fetal vascu

The pathology of diverticulosis coli.

Left-sided diverticulosis coli is a common condition in western communities, with 30% to 50% of adults over the age of 60 being affected. It predominantly involves the sigmoid colon. The diverticula (pseudodiverticula) are pockets of mucosa bounded by muscularis mucosae and invested with a thin layer of submucosa, that are forced out through weak points in the muscularis propria, the tips ending in the colonic subserosa. The weak points in the muscle coat are the sites of entry of the nutrient vessels of the colonic mucosa. Diverticulosis is attributed to increased colonic intraluminal pressur

[Neuroradiologic emergencies in infectious pathology].

The main goal of urgent imaging evaluation of patients with suspected CNS infection is to differentiate infectious from tumoral or vascular lesions in order to provide appropriate management. MR imaging, including diffusion weighted imaging and spectroscopy, is superior to CT imaging to characterize lesion location and etiology. The CT and MRI features of the more frequent bacterial, viral and parasitic CNS infections will be described.

Hyperparathyroidism associated with thyroid pathology.

BACKGROUND: The pathological association between thyroid and parathyroid gland disease is here discussed. The multiphase analyzer has revealed a new type of subclinical primary hyperparathyroidism (HPP) and the role of surgery in these cases is not clear. METHODS: This is a prospective study of all cases of thyroid disease in association with parathyroid disease treated surgically in our Institute from July 1999 to June 2001. RESULTS: Of the 221 thyroidectomies carried out, 29 patients had an elevated preoperative serum level of parathyroid hormone (PTH). An ultrasonography examination was p

Endoscopic treatment of hindfoot pathology.

The arthroscope has served the orthopaedic surgeon as a diagnostic and operative tool since 1931. Several reports on its use in the treatment of extra-articular injuries have been published over the past few years. The surgical approach to the posterior ankle region is associated with some complications stemming from the poor blood supply to this region that can lead to wound complications and the formation of painful scars that later cause irritation when shoes are worn. We describe our experience in treating 3 hindfoot pathologic conditions, chronic Achilles tendonitis, os trigonum syndrome,

Pathology of gestational trophoblastic diseases.

Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) is a heterogeneous group of diseases. This used to include partial and complete hydatidiform moles, invasive mole, choriocarcinoma and placental site trophoblastic tumour. In recent years, new entities, including epithelioid trophoblastic tumour, have been added to this family. Non-neoplastic and neoplastic lesions derived from implantation site and chorion intermediate trophoblast have been gaining attention in the literature. New markers for trophoblasts have been identified facilitating histological diagnosis in cases with unusual clinical or patholog
