A rapid review of variation in the use of dental general anaesthetics in children.

Introduction The use of dental general anaesthetics (DGAs) remains a cause for concern due to additional strains placed on health services. There are numerous factors influencing the prevalence and use of DGAs, and understanding these is an important first step in addressing the issue.Aim Conduct a rapid review of current peer-reviewed and grey literature on the variation in the use of DGAs in children. Methods Electronic searching using Medline via Ovid covering DGA articles from 1998 onwards, written in English. Emotional abuse as a predictor of early maladaptive schemas in adolescents: contributions to the development of depressive and social anxiety symptoms.

The schema therapy model posits that maltreatment generates early maladaptive schemas (EMSs) that lead to the development of emotional disorders throughout the life span. The model also stipulates that temperament moderates the influence of maltreatment on EMSs. This study examines (a) whether emotional abuse perpetrated by parents and peers, both alone and interactively with temperament, predicts the worsening of EMSs; and (b) whether EMSs in turn predict an increase in depressive and social anxiety symptoms in adolescents. A total of 1,052 adolescents (Mage=13.43; SD=1.29) were assessed at t

Quality of social relationships and the development of depression in parentally-bereaved youth.

Fear of abandonment has been found to be associated with mental health problems for youth who have experienced a parent's death. This article examines how youth's fears of abandonment following the death of a parent lead to later depressive symptoms by influencing relationships with caregivers, peers, and romantic partners. Participants were 109 youth ages 7-16 (50% male), assessed 4 times over a 6-year period. The ethnic composition of the sample was non-Hispanic Caucasian (67%), Hispanic (16%), African American (7%), Native American (3%), Asian (1%), and Other (6%). Youth's fears of abandonm

Parenting Practices and Adolescent Boys' Health and Well-being in Ethiopia: Exploratory Analysis.

PURPOSE: Although there is universal recognition of the critical role that parents play in influencing the well-being of adolescents, there is sparse evidence that documents this relationship in low- and middle-income countries. Drawing on cross-sectional data from Ethiopia, this article explores how parenting practices shape the well-being of very young adolescent boys, and how these patterns differ in urban and rural contexts. METHODS: We analyze both quantitative and qualitative survey data (2017-2018) from the Gender and Adolescence: Global Evidence study among very young adolescents (age

Injection network drivers of HIV prevention service utilization among people who inject drugs: results of a community-based sociometric network cohort in New Delhi, India.

INTRODUCTION: Injection drug networks may influence their network members' health-seeking behaviours. Using data from a sociometric injecting partner network of people who inject drugs (PWID) in New Delhi, India, we assessed the role of injecting partner (alter) behaviours on individual engagement in HIV prevention services. METHODS: We enumerated injecting partner linkages among 2512 PWID using coupon referrals and biometric data from November 2017 to March 2020. Participants completed interviewer-administered questionnaires and provided information on injection behaviours, injecting partner

Exploring Tobacco Use in Young Childhood Cancer Survivors: the Role of Social Acceptance, Workplace Environments, and Stress Reduction.

Recent advancements in childhood cancer treatment have significantly improved survival rates, yet survivors continue to face considerable morbidity and mortality, rendering them a vulnerable population. Tobacco use, linked to heightened cancer risk, is discouraged among survivors for long-term health preservation; however, many persist in its use, mirroring rates among their non-cancer peers. Through 25 in-depth interviews, we explored the interplay of perceived risk and social integration on tobacco use post-treatment among both Latine and non-Latine young adult survivors. Sixty percent of re

Sex Behaviors as Social Cues Motivating Social Venue Patronage Among Young Black Men Who Have Sex with Men.

HIV prevention programs often focus on the physical social venues where men who have sex with men (MSM) frequent as sites where sex behaviors are assumed to be practiced and risk is conferred. But, how exactly these behaviors influence venue patronage is not well understood. In this study, we present a two-mode network analysis that determines the extent that three types of sex behaviors-condomless sex, sex-drug use, and group sex-influence the patronage of different types of social venues among a population sample of young Black MSM (YBMSM) (N = 623). A network analytic technique called expon

Effects of Simulated Hearing Loss on Bilingual Children's Consonant Recognition in Noise.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the possible impact of simulated hearing loss on speech perception in Spanish-English bilingual children. To avoid confound between individual differences in hearing-loss configuration and linguistic experience, threshold-elevating noise simulating a mild-to-moderate sloping hearing loss was used with normal-hearing listeners. The hypotheses were that: (1) bilingual children can perform similarly to English-speaking monolingual peers in quiet; (2) for both bilingual and monolingual children, noise and simulated hearing loss would have detrimental impacts cons

Attitudes and behaviours on driving under the influence of drugs: a multigroup analysis of non-drug users and people who use methamphetamine.

BACKGROUND: Stimulant-affected drivers are overrepresented in global road trauma statistics, however, studies to date have not accurately defined how drug consumption contributes to increased risk of road trauma. This study examined whether attitudes toward drug driving predicts dangerous driving behaviour among people who currently use methamphetamine, and whether this differs to individuals with no history of any drug use. METHOD: Three attitude factors (favourable attitudes toward risks, unfavourable attitudes toward sanctions, and favourable peer attitudes) were explored using an adapted

Beyond social disorganization: Family SES, neighborhood context, and adolescent alcohol use.

The relationship between contextual factors, including neighborhood characteristics, and adolescent alcohol use remains unclear, with studies finding either no effect or associations in either direction. The current study used data from a subset of a Czech longitudinal cohort (ELSPAC; analytic N = 1528) to examine how family socioeconomic status (SES), neighborhood advantage (administrative data), and perceived neighborhood disorder (subjective ratings) jointly influence alcohol use at age 15 (latent factor using three reports as indicators). Parental drinking, maternal monitoring, and peer al

ACR Appropriateness Criteria® Indolent Lung Cancer.

Persistent or slow-growing subsolid nodules and atypical lung cysts often represent indolent forms of lung cancer. These nodules require careful assessment by a multidisciplinary tumor board to determine risk, natural history, treatment options, and patient preferences. When the preferred management is imaging surveillance rather than active intervention, the main objective is to detect significant changes that could alter patient management. The choice of imaging modality should be based on its accuracy and whether the findings will influence the decision to pursue treatment. If the team dete

ADHD Symptomatology is Associated with Alcohol Use and Consequences via Drinking Norms.

Background: Research suggests individuals with ADHD are at risk for alcohol use and related problems and are more susceptible to peer influence. Although previous research has focused on the relationship between alcohol use, related problems, and ADHD symptomatology, scant research has examined whether descriptive drinking norms (i.e., perception of others quantity of drinking) and level of alcohol use mediate this association. Objectives: Consequently, the current study tested a sequential mediation model to examine whether ADHD symptoms were associated with alcohol-related problems via drink…

Factors Associated With Intended Utilization of Home-Based Long-Term Care Among Older Adults in China: The Moderating Effect of Community Support.

OBJECTIVES: Guided by Andersen's behavioral model, the objectives of this study were to (a) examine the associations between individual factors and the intended utilization of home-based long-term care (LTC) services among older adults in China and (b) explore the influence of community support, if any, on these associations. METHODS: Using a multistage random sampling approach, we recruited 1,064 older adults in Chengdu, China. Hierarchical regression was employed to investigate the direct effects of individual predictors and community support on the intended use of home-based LTC services.
