Face perception is mediated by a distributed cortical network.

The neural system associated with face perception in the human brain was investigated using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). In contrast to many studies that focused on discreet face-responsive regions, the objective of the current study was to demonstrate that regardless of stimulus format, emotional valence, or task demands, face perception evokes activation in a distributed cortical network. Subjects viewed various stimuli (line drawings of unfamiliar faces and photographs of unfamiliar, famous, and emotional faces) and their phase scrambled versions. A network of face-responsi…

Assessment of cyclodisparity-induced slant perception with a synoptophore.

PURPOSE: To evaluate with a synoptophore slant perception induced by binocular cyclodisparities in normal subjects and to argue for the possibility of abnormal slant perception in patients with cyclo-vertical strabismus. METHODS: A vertical line with cyclodisparities that ranged from 0 degrees to +/- 10 degrees was presented to 17 normal subjects (mean +/- SD age, 28.4 +/- 5.6 years; 11 men and 6 women) with a synoptophore, and the perceived slant of the line in the pitch plane was measured by a matching method. Cyclodisparity thresholds for top-away and top-forward slants were also evaluated…

Neural correlates of conscious perception in the attentional blink.

If attending to a target in a rapid stream of visual stimuli within the next 400 ms or so, a second target in the stream is frequently not detected by an observer. This so-called attentional blink can provide a comparison of neural signals elicited by identical stimuli that, in one condition, reach conscious awareness and, in the other, fail to be selected for awareness. In the present study, using event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), differences of neural activation were studied in an attentional blink experiment in order to identify brain regions putatively involved in

Functioning of olivocochlear bundle and speech perception in noise.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of contralateral acoustic stimuli on speech identification scores and to correlate this effect to contral … l acoustic stimuli. RESULTS: Findings revealed that contralateral acoustic stimuli enhanced speech perception when ipsilateral signal to noise ratios was +10 dB and +15 dB. This enhancement had significant positive correlation with contralateral suppression of OAE. CONCLUSIONS: The results of the present study support the hypothesis that medial olivocochle …

Deficits in beat perception and dyslexia: evidence from French.

Recent research has suggested a novel link between deficits in the perception of cues relevant to speech rhythm (i.e., deficits in amplitude envelope rise time processing, or beat perception) and the phonological deficits seen in most dyslexic children. In this research, we investigated whether these beat perception deficits were specific to a stress-timed language, such as English, or whether they would generalize to languages with different rhythmic properties, such as French. Eighteen dyslexics, 18 reading level controls, and 20 chronological age controls were tested on a battery of phonolo…

Effect of petroleum derivatives and solvents on colour perception.

BACKGROUND: Occupational exposure to various neurotoxic chemicals has been shown to be associated with colour vision impairment. It seems that this can occur at low exposure levels, sometimes well below the recommended occupational threshold limits. This study was undertaken to determine the effect of exposure to petroleum derivatives (polyethylene, polystyrene) and solvents (perchloroethylene) on colour perception. METHODS: Colour vision was assessed using the Ishihara plates, the D-15 test and the Farnsworth Munsell 100 Hue test. Two factories using petroleum derivatives and three dry clean…

The epidemiologic evolution and present perception of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Patients with rare diseases are confronted by limited attention from the scientific community, a delayed diagnosis, a limited availability of resources and high costs of treatment. Although hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) does not meet the criteria for rare diseases, many physicians are uncomfortable with the disease, and patients still pay a price for the perceived "rarity" of HCM. In the year 2000, as part of a large research project on cardiovascular disease prevention (Progetto Cuore), the Italian Institute of Health has approved and funded a National Registry of HCM. The aims of the reg

Optimal visual perception and detection of oral cavity neoplasia.

The most common way to detect disease is by visual inspection of the suspect tissue. However, the human eye is not optimized for this task because the perceived spectrum of light is divided into three channels, all of which have overlapping spectral sensitivity curves. Here, we present new methods to optimize visually perceived contrast based on spectral differences between normal and abnormal tissue. We apply these methods to the perception of fluorescence emission from the oral cavity. Abnormalities in the oral cavity are optimally perceived when the excitation is between nm. To optimally vi…

An exploration of district nurses' perception of occupational stress.

Many studies in nurse occupational stress have been carried out on high-dependency areas in general nursing, while community nursing has bee … ing quantitative and qualitative approaches. Data were collected using the Community Health Nurses' Perceptions of Work-Related Stressors Questionnaire (Walcott-McQuigg and Ervin, 1992). Results revealed that the most stressful aspects of work for this group of district nurses were: work overload; climate of change; nursing patients with complex care needs; …

What visual perception tells us about mind and brain.

Recent studies of visual perception have begun to reveal the connection between neuronal activity in the brain and conscious visual experience. Transcranial magnetic stimulation of the human occipital lobe disrupts the normal perception of objects in ways suggesting that important aspects of visual perception are based on activity in early visual cortical areas. Recordings made with microelectrodes in animals suggest that the perception of the lightness and depth of visual surfaces develops through computations performed across multiple brain areas. Activity in earlier areas is more tightly co…

The stationarity hypothesis: an allocentric criterion in visual perception.

Having long considered that extraretinal information plays little or no role in spatial vision, the study of structure from motion (SfM) has confounded a moving observer perceiving a stationary object with a non-moving observer perceiving a rigid object undergoing equal and opposite motion. However, recently it has been shown that extraretinal information does play an important role in the extraction of structure from motion by enhancing motion cues for objects that are stationary in an allocentric, world-fixed reference frame (Nature 409 (2001) 85). Here, we test whether stationarity per se i

Quantitative thermal perception thresholds relative to exposure to vibration.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the risk of disturbed thermal perception relative to exposure to vibration, to investigate a possible exposure-response relation and to analyse a possible relation between thermal perception and sensory symptoms. METHODS: The study was based on a cross section of 123 male workers exposed to vibration and 62 male workers who were not exposed. Thermal perception of cold, warmth, and heat pain was bilaterally determined from the thenar eminence by the method of limits. Perception of cold and warmth were also tested in the second digit. Personal energy equivalent exposure to…

Vaccine safety--vaccine benefits: science and the public's perception.

The development of cowpox vaccination by Jenner led to the development of immunology as a scientific discipline. The subsequent eradication of smallpox and the remarkable effects of other vaccines are among the most important contributions of biomedical science to human health. Today, the need for new vaccines has never been greater. However, in developed countries, the public's fear of vaccine-preventable diseases has waned, and awareness of potential adverse effects has increased, which is threatening vaccine acceptance. To further the control of disease by vaccination, we must develop safe

The overstimulated state of dyslexia: perception, knowledge, and learning.

Dyslexia is far more than a learning disorder; it has significant impact on personality organization. While dyslexia usually begins to manifest most clearly in early latency when the challenge of learning to read is at its height, often the dyslexic child's ego development and functioning has already been adversely affected. The literature from neuropsychology suggests that dyslexia is a subtle language-processing disorder that affects emotional, cognitive, and social development. The neuroanatomical literature also suggests a significant correlation between the neurodevelopmental basis for dy

Perception of self-generated movement following left parietal lesion.

Three apraxic patients with lesions in the left parietal cortex were required to execute finger movements with either hand, while the visual feedback they received about the movement was manipulated systematically. We used a device which allowed us to present on a video monitor either the patient's hand or the examiner's hand simultaneously performing an identical or a different movement. In each trial, patients were required to decide whether the hand shown on the screen was their own or not. Hand movements produced in response to verbal command included simple (single-finger extension) and c

Face perception in children with autism and Asperger's syndrome.

Children with diagnoses of either autism or Asperger's syndrome were matched on measures of verbal mental age with nonautistic control children. They were tested on their abilities to process both facial and nonfacial stimuli. There were no significant differences between the low ability autistic and control groups, but the high ability autistic and Asperger's children performed significantly worse than controls across all tests. Group averages masked substantial individual variation. The results are seen as indicating a general perceptual deficit that is not specific to faces or emotions. Thi
