OBJECTIVES: Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) was used worldwide until the 1970s, when concerns about its toxic effects, its environmental persistence, and its concentration in the food supply led to use restrictions and prohibitions. In 2001, more than 100 countries signed the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs), committing to eliminate the use of 12 POPs of greatest concern. However, DDT use was allowed for disease vector control. In 2006, the World Health Organization and the U.S. Agency for International Development endorsed indoor DDT spraying to control malar…

Traditionally, engineering and environment-based interventions have contributed to the prevention of malaria in Asia. However, with the intr … he implementation of residual-spraying programs and the environmental concerns linked to the use of persistent organic pollutants. To guide future research and operational agendas focusing on environmental-control interventions, it is necessary to learn from the successes and failures from the time before the introduction of insecticides. The objective of this paper is to desc …

Coastal ecosystems are frequently subjected to complex mixtures of pollutants. However, the combined ecological effects of different pollutant types, such as heavy metals and persistent organic compounds, remain poorly understood in natural environments. To investigate the combined ecological effects of copper (Cu) and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) on phytoplankton in natural marine environments, a mesocosm experiment was conducted in the Jiaozhou Bay in autumn 2024. Changes in phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a, Chl-a), community structure, and nutrients were monitored in response to exposure to Cu

Carbon tetrachloride (CT, CCl₄) is one typical persistent organochlorine pollutant, which is refractory to be degraded in environment due to its strong chemical inertness. In this study, organic acids were introduced into the thermal activated persulfate (PS) system, which would react with oxidative radicals to generate reductive radicals, promoting the rapid degradation of CT. The results showed that formic acid (FA) enhanced the degradation rate by 3.38 times compared to the PS system alone, and the reductive degradation dominated in this process. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectr

Research on sulfur metabolism in plants has historically been undertaken within the context of industrial pollution. Resolution of the problem of sulfur pollution has led to sulfur deficiency in many soils. Key questions remain concerning how different plant organs deal with reactive and potentially toxic sulfur metabolites. In this review, we discuss sulfur dioxide/sulfite assimilation in grape berries in relation to gene expression and quality traits, features that remain significant to the food industry. We consider the intrinsic metabolism of sulfite and its consequences for fruit biology

Personal Care Products (PCPs) have been one of the most studied chemicals in the last twenty years since they were identified as pseudo-persistent pollutants by the European Union in the early 2000s. The accumulation of PCPs in the aquatic environment and their effects on non-target species make it necessary to find new, less harmful, substances. Polyethylene glycol (PEGs) and polyvinyl alcohol (PVAs) are two polymers that have increased their presence in the composition of PCPs in recent years, but little is known about the effect of their accumulation in the environment on non-target species

Tri-(2,3-dibromopropyl) isocyanate (TBC), a new emerged persistent organic pollutant, is widely used in fields of flame retardant, textile, rubber and plastic with strong hepatotoxicity. Purple Sweet Potato Polysaccharide (PSPP) has antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects. This study aims to answer the scientific question whether PSPP has a protective effect on TBC induced liver injury. The effect of PSPP on the apoptosis of HepG2 cells was detected by MTT assay, the morphological changes were observed by morphological observation, and the apoptosis rate was determined by flow cytometry. Inorganic cyanide and nitrile compounds are distributed widely in the environment, chiefly as a result of anthropogenic activity but also through cyanide synthesis by a range of organisms including higher plants, fungi and bacteria. The major source of cyanide in soil and water is through the discharge of effluents containing a variety of inorganic cyanide and nitriles. Here the fate of cyanide compounds in soil and water is reviewed, identifying those factors that affect their persistence and which determine whether they are amenable to biological degradation. The exploitation of cyanides by

Illicit drug abuse and addiction are universal issues requiring international cooperation and interdisciplinary and multisectoral solutions. These addictive substances are utilized for recreational purposes worldwide, including in sub-Saharan Africa. On the other hand, conventional wastewater treatment facilities such as waste stabilization ponds lack the design to remove the most recent classes of pollutants such as illicit drug abuse. As a result, effluents from these treatment schemes contaminate the entire ecosystem. Public health officials are concerned about detecting these pollutants at

Metabolic-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD), linked to lipid dysregulation, poses global health risks. 2,2',3,4,4',5'-hexachlorobiphenyl (PCB138) is a persistent organic pollutant that poses potential threats to liver health due to its environmental persistence and bioaccumulation. Theabrown (TB), a natural compound extracted from black tea, exhibits lipid-lowering and antioxidant properties, but its protective effects on PCB138-induced liver injury have not been thoroughly investigated. Following a biphasic experimental design, juvenile male C57BL/6J mice were subjected to chronic PCB138

Environmental pollution, driven by industrialization, urbanization, and intensive agriculture, has unleashed a cascade of hazardous contaminants, heavy metals, synthetic dyes, persistent organic pollutants, and emerging micropollutants, into air, water, and soil. These agents pose profound risks to ecosystems and human health due to their toxicity, bioaccumulation, and resilience to natural degradation. Conventional remediation methods, though partially effective, are often hindered by high costs, poor selectivity, secondary pollution, and excessive energy demands. In response, the development…

Asthma represents one of the most common medical issues in the modern world. It is a chronic inflammatory disease characterized by persistent inflammation of the airways and disturbances in redox status, leading to hyperresponsiveness of bronchi and airway obstruction. Apart from classical risk factors such as air pollution, family history, allergies, or obesity, disturbances of the levels of micronutrients lead to impairments in the defense mechanisms of the affected organism against oxidative stress and proinflammatory stimuli. In the present review, the impact of micronutrients on the preva

As a persistent organic pollutant, pentachlorophenol (PCP) has serious impacts on human health. However, its presence in animal source food products sold in the Guangdong Province (GD) of China, and the resultant dietary exposure have not been elucidated. To address this gap, 3,100 samples from seven food categories, including beef, pork, mutton, offals, broilers, hen eggs, and farmed freshwater fish, marketed throughout four geographical regions of GD, were collected from 2015 to 2018. Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry was employed to detect PCP levels in these food matrices.

CONTEXT: Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) such as bisphenol A (BPA) and atrazine (ATR) are persistent organic pollutants that pose severe environmental and health risks even at ultra-trace concentrations. Although graphene oxide (GO)-based nanoadsorbents exhibit high adsorption capability toward organic contaminants, the balance between adsorption strength and adsorbent regenerability remains poorly understood at the molecular level. In this work, a comprehensive multiscale computational investigation was conducted to elucidate the adsorption, electronic interaction, thermal stability, an…

BACKGROUND: African Americans (AAs) experience higher rates of preterm birth and fetal growth restriction relative to other pregnant populations. Differential in utero exposure to environmental chemicals may partially explain these health disparities, as AAs are disproportionately exposed to environmental hazards.
OBJECTIVE: We examined the individual and mixture effects of non-persistent chemicals and persistent organic pollutants (POPs) on gestational age at birth and birthweight for gestational age z-scores within a prospective cohort of pregnant AAs.
METHODS: First-trimester serum and ur…

Mercury (Hg) is a persistent and highly toxic pollutant that poses significant threats to ecosystems and human health. Its long-range transport, bioaccumulation, biomagnification, and complex environmental cycling amplify these risks. This review provides a comprehensive overview of mercury's sources, transformations, impacts, health risks, remediation strategies, and regulatory frameworks. Mercury enters the environment from natural sources, such as volcanic eruptions, rock weathering, forest fires, and ocean emissions, as well as from anthropogenic sources, such as coal combustion, mining, i

Sediment tends to accumulate inorganic and persistent hydrophobic organic contaminants representing one of the main sinks and sources of pollution. Generally, contaminated sediment poses medium- and long-term risks to humans and ecosystem health; dredging activities or natural resuspension phenomena (i.e., strongly adverse weather conditions) can remobilize pollution releasing it into the water column. Thus, ex situ traditional remediation activities (i.e., dredging) can be hazardous compared to in situ techniques that try to keep to a minimum sediment mobilization, unless dredging is compulso

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are persistent and toxic organic pollutants to which humans are exposed via inhalation, dermal absorption, and ingestion, increasing cancer risk, particularly among smokers and occupationally exposed individuals. This research aims to expand current knowledge by identifying the oral mucosae as an additional gateway for PAHs, owing to their high lipophilicity and the greater permeability of oral mucosae to xenobiotics, a finding that is particularly relevant given the established correlation between tobacco-derived PAHs and oral, head, and neck cancers.
