The five factor model of personality applied to adults who stutter.

UNLABELLED: Previous research has not explored the Five Factor Model of personality among adults who stutter. Therefore, the present study investigated the five personality domains of Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness, Agreeableness and Conscientiousness, as measured by the NEO Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI), in a sample of 93 adults seeking speech treatment for stuttering, and compared these scores with normative data from an Australian and a United States sample. Results revealed that NEO-FFI scores for the stuttering group were within the 'average' range for all five personality domains.

The mediating effect of symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder and depression on the relationship between personality traits and quality of life in emergency service workers.

BACKGROUND: Emergency service workers are often exposed to fatalities during accidents or disasters. Therefore, they may be more prone to experiencing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and depression. It has been shown that these comorbid disorders are related to personality traits and quality of life (QOL). METHODS: We hypothesized that mental disorders, such as symptoms of PTSD and depression, mediate the relationship between personality traits, as measured on the 10-Item Personality Inventory (TIPI), and QOL, as measured on the MOS 36-item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). RESULTS: Par…

Functional and dysfunctional impulsivity in childhood and adolescence.

There are few self-reports of impulsivity dealing with children, although this personality trait has been related to many behaviour problems in both children and adolescents. The appropriateness of the Dickman Impulsivity Inventory for Children (DII-c) and the Dickman Impulsivity Inventory (DII) to measure impulsivity in children and adolescents was assessed. The factorial structure of the DII-c and the internal consistencies for both inventories suggest the measured dimensions are not consistent until adulthood. These self-report measures are not appropriate for children and adolescents.

Correlates of pathological gambling propensity in prison inmates.

The South Oaks Gambling Inventory was administered to 136 consecutively admitted inmates in a medium-security prison in Nevada. According to the criteria of the authors of this instrument, 22.79% of these inmates had some problem and 26% were probable pathological gamblers. Significant positive correlations with the F, depression, psychopathic deviate, psychasthenia, paranoia, schizophrenia, and Mac Andrew alcoholism scales of the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) were found. Gambling score was negatively correlated with the Raven's Standard Progressive Matrices measure of int…

The Egocentricity Index as a measure of self-esteem and egocentric personality style for inpatient adolescents.

The Egocentricity Index (EI) was assessed as a measure of self-esteem, egocentric behavior, and a basic statistic in a population of 60 predominantly behavior disordered, inpatient adolescents. Millon Adolescent Personality Inventory (MAPI) scales served as criterion measures. A low mean EI was found in these youngsters but was not mediated by low self-esteem as the Index was uncorrelated with self-esteem/self-concept measures. The Index did correlate with an histrionic type of egocentric personality style. The purported association between the EI components of pair and reflection responses wa…

Psychometric evaluation of the Multidimensional Schizotypy Scale-Brief (MSS-B) in Spanish and Mexican samples: A cross-cultural study.

This study investigates the (a) underlying factor structure and (b) convergent and discriminant validity of the Multidimensional Schizotypy Scale-Brief (MSS-B), a novel measure for assessing positive, negative, and disorganized schizotypy in nonclinically ascertained samples of Mexican and Spanish adults. Two independent studies were conducted. Study 1 involved two independent samples of Castilian Spanish speakers from Spain (Sample 1: n = 1,049; Mage = 23.0, 76% female; Sample 2: n = 542; Mage = 26.5, 83% female), whereas Study 2 assessed a Mexican sample (n = 1,437; Mage = 30.5, 80.1% female

Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition, personality disorders and the alternative model: Prediction of naturalistically observed behavior, interpersonal functioning, and psychiatric symptoms, 1 year later.

Traditional personality disorders (PDs; e.g., Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition [DSM-5] Section II PDs), as well as dimensional traits (e.g., alternative model for PD [AMPD]), offer unique advantages in personality pathology assessment. However, very little is known about how these systems compare in predicting observable behavior. This study compares self-report ratings of PD symptoms (i.e., Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV PD) with self-reports of AMPD traits (i.e., Personality Inventory for DSM-5) in predicting clinical outcomes, 1 year later, via …

Dyadic effects of coping strategies, time perspectives, and personality on the quality of life of cancer patients and their caregivers.

OBJECTIVE: Researchers are interested in studying whether the quality of life (QoL) of cancer patients and caregivers is influenced by internal psychobehavioral processes (temporality and coping strategies) and the personality traits that they or their relatives experience. We examined these associations in a sample of patient-caregiver dyads by using the actor-partner interdependence model. METHODS: This cross-sectional study involved 156 cancer patient-caregiver dyads. The self-reported data included QoL (Short-Form 36), coping strategies (Brief Coping Orientation to Problems Experienced Sc

Social appearance anxiety among the dark tetrad and self-concealment.

This study analyzed the effects of the Dark Tetrad (narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, sadism) and self-concealment on social appearance anxiety. Empirical investigations on which personality traits influence social appearance anxiety are yet missing. In this study, a sample of N = 1186 Chinese students performed a questionnaire-based survey assessing different personality facets and social appearance anxiety tendencies. Measures included the Narcissistic Personality Inventory, the Levenson Self-Report Psychopathy Scale, the Machiavellian Personality Scale, the Short Sadistic Impulse S…

Associations between MMPI-3 scale scores and the DSM-5 personality disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The current study examined associations between Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-3 (MMPI-3) scales and self-reported DSM-5 Section II personality disorder (PD) symptoms. A priori hypotheses were generated for which MMPI-3 scales would be most highly associated with each PD. METHODS: We used a large sample (n = 489) of university students, who completed the MMPI-3 and two established self-report measures of personality disorders. RESULTS: The results were generally consistent with theoretical expectations and previous research utilizing the MMPI-2-RF. Specifically, most …

The relationship between a diagnosis of antisocial personality and hostility: development of an Antisocial Hostility scale.

An antisocial hostility scale was developed by correlating items of the Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory with a diagnosis of antisocial personality (ASP) as determined by a computerized version of the DSM-III. Fifty-two male volunteers for drug-related studies at the Addiction Research Center were used for a preliminary test development sample. The scale developed thereby was related significantly to a diagnosis of antisocial personality in a cross-validation sample of 28 drug abusers. A final scale was developed by obtaining correlations between ASP and Buss-Durkee items using the subjects fro

The interaction of narcissism, agreeableness and conscientiousness in entrepreneurial mentoring: Implications for learning outcomes.

The personality configuration of mentors and mentees is important in understanding mentoring outcomes. While the best mentors appear to have higher degrees of agreeableness and conscientiousness, entrepreneurs generally score lower on agreeableness and have higher degrees of narcissism, a personality trait that could be detrimental to mentoring. We investigated the interaction of narcissism with two traits from the Big Five Inventory, namely agreeableness and conscientiousness, to see how this interaction influenced learning from the relationship of mentee entrepreneurs. Our findings suggest t

Borderline personality organization and psychopathic traits in nonclinical adolescents: relationships of identity diffusion, primitive defense mechanisms and reality testing with callousness and impulsivity traits.

Although psychotherapeutic observation and empirical data suggest a link between borderline and antisocial personality disorder or traits in adolescents, there is no study on the relationships of borderline personality organization (BPO) and psychopathic traits in adolescents. The aim of this study was to explore the relationship of structural criteria of (BPO) as assessed by the French version of the Borderline Personality Inventory (BPI), with psychopathic traits, as assessed by the French version of the Levenson Self-Report Psychopathy Scale (LSRP), in a nonclinical sample of 243 adolescent…

Validity of three measures of antisociality in predicting HIV risk behaviors in methadone-maintenance patients.

Most opiate users are injection drug users (IDUs). A significant percentage of IDUs have antisocial personality disorder (APD). APD has been found by some researchers to be an additional risk factor for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection in IDUs. The present study evaluated the association of sociodemographic characteristics, substance abuse history, and several measures of antisociality including the DSM-III-R diagnosis made by the Personality Disorder Examination, the California Psychological Inventory-Socialization Scale, and Hare's Revised Psychopathy Checklist, to behaviors asso

Sleepiness may predict hypnotizability, while personality traits do not.

Sleepiness and personality traits have been controversially reported as associated to individual hypnotizability level i.e. receptiveness to hypnotic suggestions and behave accordingly. In this study, we further investigate the relationship between the level of general daytime sleepiness and personality traits with the level of hypnotizability. Seventy-eight healthy young volunteers (34 women) completed the fast assessment of general daytime sleepiness and personality with the Epworth Sleepiness Scale and the 10-item Big Five Inventory respectively, and underwent hypnotic evaluation through th

Personality Pathology and Interpersonal Problem Stability.

Personality disorders (PDs) are often described as stable, which ignores the important dynamic processes and shifts that are observed clinically in individuals with PD. The current study examined patterns of variability in problematic interpersonal functioning, a core feature of personality pathology. Participants (N = 150) were assessed for personality pathology at baseline and also completed the Inventory of Interpersonal Problems-Circumplex Scales at baseline and every 3 months over the course of a year. Baseline PD was used to predict individual means and variability parameters in generali

Comparing English-Language and Chinese-Language Assessment of DSM-5 Personality Disorders and Interpersonal Problems in Chinese Bilingual Speakers.

A review of the literature on Chinese translations of Western self-report personality disorder assessment measures indicates the need to empirically evaluate the validity of assessing Western personality disorder constructs in Chinese language and culture. The current study presents a novel approach to examining this critical question in cross-cultural clinical assessment science and practice. One hundred and ninety-nine (199) Mandarin Chinese and English bilingual participants (92 males and 107 females) provided both English and Chinese self-report ratings on the Inventory of Interpersonal Pr

Avoidant Personality Traits and Avoidant Coping in Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy vs. Short-Term Psychodynamic Psychotherapy for Adult Depression.

Research on the significance of comorbid personality disorders (PD) on the outcome of depression treatment has shown inconsistent findings. In addition, it is still unclear whether treatment choice based on personality traits and coping can enhance the efficacy of depression treatment. Aiming to deliver clinically representative results, we use dimensional measures to examine avoidant personality and coping as moderators for the efficacy of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) versus short-term psychodynamic psychotherapy (STPP) for depression. Furthermore, we explored whether these depression t
