Risk of herpes zoster among patients with psychiatric diseases: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Psychiatric disorders have been shown to be associated with impaired immune response, including decreased cellular immunity to varicella-zoster virus. However, the risk of herpes zoster (HZ) in psychiatric patients is, to date, unknown. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the risk of herpes zoster (HZ) in psychiatric patients compared with the general population. METHODS: We used data from the Taiwan Longitudinal Health Insurance Database from 2004 to 2006. Our study cohort consisted of patients aged 18 years and older diagnosed with psychiatric disorders in 2004 (N

Nicotine dependence and major depression. New evidence from a prospective investigation.

We examined prospectively the association between nicotine dependence and major depression (MDD). The following questions were addressed: (1) Are smokers with a history of MDD at increased risk for progression to nicotine dependence and more severe levels of dependence? (2) Are persons with a history of nicotine dependence at increased risk for MDD? A sample of 995 young adults were interviewed in 1989 and reinterviewed in 1990, 14 months later. The revised National Institute of Mental Health-Diagnostic Interview Schedule was used to ascertain DSM-III-R nicotine dependence and other substance

Sex differences in clinically diagnosed psychiatric disorders over the lifespan: a nationwide register-based study in Sweden.

BACKGROUND: Limited studies exist on sex differences in incidence rates of psychiatric disorders across the lifespan. This study aims to analyze sex differences in the incidence rates of clinically diagnosed psychiatric disorders over the lifespan. METHODS: We conducted a nationwide register-based cohort study, including all individuals who were born in Sweden and lived in Sweden between 2003 and 2019, including 4,818,071 females and 4,837,829 males. We calculated sex- and age-specific standardized incidence rates for any and 10 major types of psychiatric disorders. Multivariable-adjusted inc

Premorbid psychiatric risk factors for postictal psychosis.

Postictal psychosis (PIP) is a common and clinically significant sequela of inpatient epilepsy monitoring. A series of 622 patients with complex partial epilepsy undergoing video-EEG evaluations as candidates for epilepsy surgery were evaluated, by structured psychiatric interview, for individual and family psychiatric histories, depression, anxiety, and features of personality disorders. No patient had psychotic symptoms at baseline. Twenty-nine developed a PIP episode during monitoring. The a priori hypotheses were that patients with PIP would have higher baseline schizotypal and paranoid pe

Psychiatric, psychosocial, and physical health correlates of co-occurring cannabis use disorders and nicotine dependence.

BACKGROUND: Several gaps in the literature on individuals with co-occurring cannabis and tobacco use exist, including the extent of psychiatric, psychosocial, and physical health problems. We examine these gaps in an epidemiological study, the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC), of a large, nationally representative sample. METHODS: The sample was drawn from Wave 2 NESARC respondents (N=34,653). Adults with current cannabis use disorders and nicotine dependence (CUD+ND) (n=74), CUD only (n=100), and ND only (n=3424) were compared on psychiatric disorders,

Validity of the family history method for diagnosing schizophrenia, schizophrenia-related psychoses, and schizophrenia-spectrum personality disorders in first-degree relatives of schizophrenia probands.

This study examined the validity of the family history method for diagnosing schizophrenia, schizophrenia-related psychoses, and schizophrenia-spectrum personality disorders in first-degree relatives of schizophrenia probands. This is the first large-scale study that examined the validity of the family history method for diagnosing DSM-III-R personality disorders. The best estimate DSM-III-R diagnoses of 264 first-degree relatives of 117 adult-onset schizophrenia probands based on direct structured diagnostic interviews, family history interview, and medical records were compared to Family His

Psychiatric disorders comorbid with general medical illnesses and functional somatic disorders: The Lifelines cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: It is not clear why psychiatric disorders are more prevalent in the functional somatic syndromes than other general medical illnesses. This study assessed the correlates of psychiatric disorders in 3 functional syndromes and 3 general medical illnesses in a population-based sample. METHODS: The Lifelines cohort study included 122,366 adults with relevant data for 6 self-reported conditions: irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and diabetes. For each condition the proportion with a

Increase in nonhepatic diagnoses among persons with hepatitis C hospitalized for any cause, United States, 2004-2011.

Although persons with hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection may experience nonhepatic illnesses, little is known about the frequency of and trends in such conditions in a population-based sample of HCV-infected persons. Using hospitalization data collected during 2004-2011 from the Nationwide Inpatient Sample of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project, we examined trends in comorbidities among all hospitalizations that included either a principal or secondary HCV diagnostic code (i.e., HCV was not necessarily the cause for hospitalization). We also compared comorbidities among all persons aged

Involuntary Psychiatric Holds in Acute Care Settings: Implications for Emergency Department Capacity and Care - A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: Involuntary psychiatric holds, commonly limited to 72 hours, serve as a critical intervention for individuals experiencing acute mental health crises. These holds aim to prevent immediate harm and facilitate crisis stabilization, yet their effectiveness, legal variability, and long-term impact remain inadequately studied. Despite widespread implementation, the 72-hour standard lacks strong empirical justification, and significant inconsistencies exist in its application across jurisdictions. OBJECTIVE: This narrative review examines the factors leading to the initiation of involun

Hospital break. An eight-year review of escapes and absconds from two high security forensic centers.

BACKGROUND: Increasing freedom of movement and community reintegration is a vital part of recovery for forensic service users. Clinical teams realize that risk of unauthorized leave exists when granting leave, tasking them with balancing the recovery-based treatment needs of the patients with the larger obligation to protect the public from undue risk of harm. While considerable literature exists on unauthorized leave from acute psychiatric units, there is still little research specific to unauthorized leave from forensic settings. AIMS: The aim of this study is twofold. First, to examine the

[Support for families with a mentally ill parent : Which forms of help do mentally ill parents utilize and which would they like to have?].

BACKGROUND: In Germany different offers of social support are available for families that are provided by different sectors, e.g., the youth welfare and the healthcare systems. OBJECTIVE: Documentation of the utilized help, child-related factors that are associated with the utilization and the parental desires for support. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Survey of 160 parents undergoing (partial) inpatient treatment in psychiatric hospitals via an oral interview using standardized and semi-standardized instruments. RESULTS: The results show that nonprofessional help by family and friends as well as s

[Involuntary psychiatric care for incarcerated people: a descriptive study of 73 consecutive judge-ordered discharges from psychiatric hospitalisation in France].

INTRODUCTION: The procedure of involuntary psychiatric hospitalization has been recently modified in France. Indeed, since 2011, a liberty and custody judge is appointed for each measure, to guarantee the rights of psychiatric inpatients and to prevent abusive hospitalizations. As a result, if procedural errors are noted, the liberty and custody judge may order the immediate ending of the psychiatric hospitalization. To date, only two studies described the reasons for judiciary discharge from involuntary psychiatric hospitalizations, but no study has been conducted in forensic psychiatric unit

[Involuntary admission to psychiatry at the request of caregivers: The point of view of caregivers].

OBJECTIVES: In France, the family and friends of a patient with a psychiatric disorder can legally be involved in the decision to involuntary admission to psychiatry through care at the request of a third party. This involvement has been questioned in recent years, notably to protect this third party. The main objective of this work was to assess whether providing the third party with information on care without consent when providing care at the request of a third party (SDT) had an impact on the third party's experience. The secondary objectives were to identify other factors that might impa

A behavioral economic perspective on smoking persistence in serious mental illness.

Serious mental illness (SMI) is associated with disproportionately high rates of cigarette smoking. The identification of factors that contribute to persistent smoking in people with SMI may lead to the development and adoption of tobacco control policies and treatment approaches that help these smokers quit. This commentary examines factors underlying smoking persistence in people with SMI from the perspective of behavioral economics, a discipline that applies economic principles to understanding drug abuse and dependence. Studies, conducted in the Northeastern US within the past 30years, tha

Appeals against detention in excessive security (outcomes of appeals against detention in conditions of excessive security in Scotland).

The Mental Health (Care and Treatment) (Scotland) Act 2003 introduced the right for patients in high-security psychiatric care to appeal against detention in conditions of excessive security. A previous study examined the first 100 patients to appeal under this provision. In this study we compare them with the next cohort of 110 patients to lodge an appeal, finding, contrary to expectations, no change in patient characteristics or the outcome of their appeals. The clinical, legal and demographic features of successful and unsuccessful appellants, who made up 38% and 27% of the 110 patients, re

Precision diagnosis of cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's disease for therapeutic interventions.

With the advent of anti-amyloid monoclonal antibody (AAMA) therapy, precision diagnosis is necessary for identifying appropriate patients with cognitive disorders due to Alzheimer's disease. Therapy with AAMAs requires that candidates be diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment or mild dementia, have elevated brain amyloid-β, have good physical, psychiatric, and medical health, and lack clinical or biomarker evidence of potentially impactful non-Alzheimer brain disorders. The first three diagnostic activities are the core of the Clinical Practice Guidelines, but the last element of the precisi

Social phobia in immune-mediated inflammatory diseases.

OBJECTIVE: Immune-mediated inflammatory diseases (IMID) such as multiple sclerosis (MS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are associated with a high prevalence of psychiatric comorbidity but little is known about the prevalence of social phobia in IMID, or the factors associated with social phobia. We aimed to determine the prevalence of social phobia in MS, IBD and RA, and the factors associated with social phobia in these IMID. METHODS: We obtained data from the enrollment visit of a cohort study in IMID of whom 654 participants were eligible for this analysis
