Ligand-Engineered Methylammonium Lead Bromide Nanoplatelets: Single-Photon Emission and Strong Light-Matter Coupling.

Lead halide perovskite nanoplatelets (LHP NPLs) are of immense interest in the materials science and optoelectronics communities owing to their strong quantum confinement leading to narrow emission peaks, thickness-dependent tunable photoluminescence, and large exciton binding energies. Thus far, their further development and photophysical investigations at ensemble and single-particle levels have been impeded by suboptimal ligand passivation, inferior environmental and colloidal stability compared to their 3D nanocrystal counterparts, and limited compositional diversity. Here, we report highl

Tunable polaritonic topologies generated by non-local photonic modes.

Photonic skyrmions are topological textures that exhibit remarkable resilience to environmental perturbations and support deeply subwavelength features, making them promising candidates for high-resolution microscopy, optical computing devices and ultrahigh-density information encoding. However, in contrast to free-space optical skyrmions, all existing approaches to generate polaritonic field skyrmions are limited by a lack of dynamic tunability. In general, without engineering the phase of the incident light, both their lattice site diameter and total topological charges remain fixed after fa

Wavelength-Multiplexed PUFs Through Single-Host Multicolor Switching in Cs2NaTbCl6: Eu3+ Double Perovskites.

Physical unclonable functions (PUFs) based on multi-wavelength emission hold significant promise for advancing high-capacity hardware security by harnessing intrinsic physical randomness. However, achieving spectrally isolated multi-channel emission within a single matrix remains a daunting challenge. Herein, we demonstrate a single matrix platform using Cs2NaTbCl6: Eu3+ double perovskite that enables excitation-programmable multicolor switching through orthogonal optical activation of Tb3+ and Eu3+ centers. This monolithic system exhibits dominant green emission (Tb3+: 5D4→7F5, 6) under 275 n

3D Unconventional Superconductivity in Bulk LaO.

Lanthanum-based compounds are cornerstones of superconductivity research, yet the La 5d orbitals typically remain empty spectator states far above the Fermi level (EF). While superconductivity has been induced in LaO up to 5.37 K in tensile epitaxy films, the intrinsic ground state of the bulk phase has remained controversial mostly due to synthetic challenges, with early reports suggesting a metallic nature. Here we report the high-pressure and high-temperature synthesis of pure bulk rock-salt LaO and unveil its intrinsic type-II superconductivity with a transition temperature (TC) of ∼6 K at

Prediction of Nontrivial Topological Phases and Rashba Spin-Splitting in BaABTe4 Janus Monolayers (A, B = Al, Ga, In, or Tl).

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have emerged as a significant focus in materials research due to their tunable properties on thermoelectricity, spin-splitting, and nontrivial topology. Specifically, Janus-type 2D materials are interesting due to their additional breaking of inversion or mirror symmetry in the atomic structure. Based on the recently synthesized monolayer MoSi2N4 and previously studied BaIn2Te4 with the chemical formula of MA2Z4, we derive a family of 2D Janus compounds, namely BaABTe4. Using first-principles calculations, a total of six Janus BaABTe4 monolayers (BaAlGaTe4, BaAlI

Raman and Infrared Signatures of Layered Boron Nitride Polytypes: A First-Principles Study.

We present a study based on first-principles calculations of the vibrational and spectroscopic properties of four types of layered boron nitride (BN) polymorphs: e-BN (AA), h-BN (AA'), r-BN (ABC), and b-BN (AB). By using density functional perturbation theory with van der Waals corrections, we calculate phonon frequencies and Raman/infrared (IR) activities at the Γ point and extract specific spectral fingerprints for each stack. In e-BN, we observe a sharp, isolated high-frequency E' mode at 1420.9cm-1 that is active in both Raman and IR. For h-BN, the characteristic Raman E2g line occurs at 1

Data-driven exploration of Na-Bi compounds: a first-principles and machine learning approach to topological thermoelectrics.

We conduct an in-depth investigation of the structural, electronic, vibrational, thermodynamic, and thermoelectric characteristics of Na-Bi-based compounds, specifically tetragonal NaBi, hexagonal NaBi3, and cubic Na3Bi, using advanced first-principles calculations in conjunction with machine learning (ML) models. We used density functional theory (DFT) with spin-orbit coupling (SOC) to figure out the electronic structure, phonon dispersions, and thermoelectric transport using Boltzmann transport theory. Our findings validate the Dirac semimetal nature of cubic Na3Bi and demonstrate varied top

Unravelling the potential of a hybrid borocarbonitride biphenylene 2D network for thermoelectric applications: a first principles study.

In this study, we investigate a novel hybrid borocarbonitride (bpn-BCN) 2D material inspired by recent advances in carbon biphenylene synthesis, using first-principles calculations and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. Our analysis confirms the structural stability of bpn-BCN through formation energy, elastic coefficients, phonon dispersion, and molecular dynamics simulations at 300 K and 800 K. The material exhibits an indirect band gap of 0.19 eV (PBE) between the X and Y points and a direct band gap of 0.58 eV (HSE) at the X point. Thermoelectric properties reveal a high Seebeck co

Ab Initio Predictions of Spin Relaxation, Dephasing, and Diffusion in Solids.

Spin relaxation, dephasing, and diffusion are at the heart of spin-based information technology. Accurate theoretical approaches to simulate spin lifetimes (τs), determining how fast the spin polarization and phase information will be lost, are important to the understanding of the underlying mechanism of these spin processes, and invaluable in searching for promising candidates of spintronic materials. Recently, we develop a first-principles real-time density-matrix (FPDM) approach to simulate spin dynamics for general solid-state systems. Through the complete first-principles descriptions of

Computational Insights into Electronic Excitations, Spin-Orbit Coupling Effects, and Spin Decoherence in Cr(IV)-Based Molecular Qubits.

The great success of point defects and dopants in semiconductors for quantum information processing has invigorated a search for molecules with analogous properties. Flexibility and tunability of desired properties in a large chemical space have great advantages over solid-state systems. The properties analogous to point defects were demonstrated in the Cr(IV)-based molecular family, Cr(IV)(aryl)4, where the electronic spin states were optically initialized, read out, and controlled. Despite this kick-start, there is still a large room for enhancing properties crucial for molecular qubits. Her

First-Principles Predictions of Out-of-Plane Group IV and V Dimers as High-Symmetry, High-Spin Defects in Hexagonal Boron Nitride.

Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) has been recently found to host a variety of quantum point defects, which are promising candidates as single-photon sources for solid-state quantum nanophotonic applications. Most recently, optically addressable spin qubits in h-BN have been the focus of intensive research due to their unique potential in quantum computation, communication, and sensing. However, the number of high-symmetry, high-spin defects that are desirable for developing spin qubits in h-BN is highly limited. Here, we combine density functional theory (DFT) and quantum embedding theories to s

Emission transformation in CdSe/ZnS quantum dots conjugated to biomolecules.

The variation of photoluminescence (PL) spectra in CdSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) at the conjugation to antibodies (ABs) has been investigated and discussed in this paper. Two types of CdSe/ZnS QDs with different CdSe core sizes (5.4 and 6.4nm) and emissions (605 and 655nm) were studied before and after the conjugation to anti-Interleukin-10 (IL-10) and anti-Pseudo rabies virus (PRV) ABs. The PL high energy shift and asymmetric shape of PL bands have been detected in bioconjugated QDs. Note that the bioconjugation impact on spectral characteristics of CdSe/ZnS QD emission has been not studied yet

Inelastic cross sections for low-energy electrons in liquid water: exchange and correlation effects.

Low-energy electrons play a prominent role in radiation therapy and biology as they are the largest contributor to the absorbed dose. However, no tractable theory exists to describe the interaction of low-energy electrons with condensed media. This article presents a new approach to include exchange and correlation (XC) effects in inelastic electron scattering at low energies (below ∼10 keV) in the context of the dielectric theory. Specifically, an optical-data model of the dielectric response function of liquid water is developed that goes beyond the random phase approximation (RPA) by accoun

Revisiting some chalcogenides for thermoelectricity.

Thermoelectric materials that are efficient well above ambient temperature are needed to convert waste-heat into electricity. Many thermoelectric oxides were investigated for this purpose, but their power factor (PF) values were too small (∼10-4 W m-1 K-2) to yield a satisfactory figure of merit zT. Changing the anions from O2- to S2- and then to Se2- is a way to increase the covalency. In this review, some examples of sulfides (binary Cr-S or derived from layered TiS2) and an example of selenides, AgCrSe2, have been selected to illustrate the characteristic features of their physical properti

Interface engineering and strain-tuned half-metallicity, magnetic anisotropy and spin transport in VI3-based van der Waals heterostructures.

Two-dimensional van der Waals (vdW) magnetic heterostructures provide a versatile platform for engineering spin-dependent phenomena. Despite growing interest in intrinsic 2D magnets, VI3-based vdW heterostructures remain largely unexplored. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate that interlayer coupling in VI3-based heterostructures induces intrinsic half-metallicity, enhances magnetic anisotropy, and enables strain-tunable spin transport. Among the considered stacking configurations, AB-stacked VI3/CrGeTe3 is the most stable, whereas AB-stacked VI3/FeI3 is the least stable. Phono

Substrate-driven modulation of interfacial charge transfer dynamics in cobalt phthalocyanine-2D material van der Waals heterostructures.

The substrate-driven modulation of interfacial charge transfer in redox-active cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc)-two-dimensional (2D) material heterostructures was investigated using Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS), and resonant photoemission spectroscopy (RPES). Graphene (Gr), tungsten disulfide (WS2), and rhenium disulfide (ReS2) were selected as representative 2D substrates with distinct electronic structures and morphologies. Raman mapping confirmed the formation of vertically stacked CoPc-2D architectures. The broad
