Use of physical exertion to enhance objective testing following mild traumatic brain injury: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Assessment of recovery from mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is complex and challenging. Post-exertion testing, where individuals undergo objective testing following physical exercise, has shown promise in identifying mTBI-related impairments that may not be evident at rest, but could hinder a safe return to sport. OBJECTIVES: To conduct a systematic review to determine if physical exertion affects objective physiological or sensorimotor tests differently in individuals with mTBI compared with healthy controls. METHODS: A systematic search of 11 databases and five trial registr

Resting vagal tone, alpha amylase and cortisol levels in women with eating disorders before and after psychotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Eating disorders such as Anorexia Nervosa (AN) and Bulimia Nervosa (BN) were previously found to partly entail alterations in stress physiology including salivary cortisol (sC), and salivary alpha amylase (sAA) at rest and basal vagal tone (HF-HRV), compared to individuals without mental disorders or with mixed mental disorders (anxiety and depressive disorders), but corresponding data remain scarce and are not entirely consistent. METHOD: HF-HRV, sC and sAA at rest were assessed in a female sample of 58 individuals with AN and 54 individuals with BN before and after psychotherapy

Biomechanical analysis on total knee replacement patients during gait: Medial pivot or posterior stabilized design?

BACKGROUND: Total Knee Replacement surgery restores joint function in patients with advanced osteoarthritis. There are several prostheses available based on different mechanisms, which guarantee knee stability during Activities of Daily Living. The aim of this study is to compare ball-in-socket (or Medial Pivot) and post-cam mechanisms to detect possible differences in terms of biomechanical parameters between these two prosthesis designs and to evaluate which design is closer to physiological biomechanics. METHODS: A kinematics, kinetics and electromyography lower limb analyses were performe

Sniffing behaviour-related changes in cardiac and cortical activity in rats.

KEY POINTS: High-frequency (HF) sniffing represents active odour sampling and an increase in the animal's motivation. We examined how HF sniffing affects the physiological activity of the brain-body system. During HF sniffing, heart rates and the ratio of theta to delta critical local field potential power were comparable to those observed during motion periods. Vagus nerve spike rates did not vary depending on HF sniffing. Our results suggest that physiological factors in the central nervous system and the periphery are not simply determined by locomotion but are crucially associated with HF

Outcomes of extremely low birth weight infants with bronchopulmonary dysplasia: impact of the physiologic definition.

AIMS: We compared neurodevelopmental outcomes of extremely low birth weight (ELBW) infants with and without bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), using the physiologic definition. STUDY DESIGN: ELBW (birth weights<1000 g) infants admitted to the Neonatal Research Network centers and hospitalized at 36 weeks postmenstrual age (n=1189) were classified using the physiologic definition of BPD. Infants underwent Bayley III assessment at 18-22 months corrected age. Multivariable logistic regression was used to determine the association between physiologic BPD and cognitive impairment (score<70). RESUL

Non-invasive measurement of oxygen saturation in the spinal vein using SWI: quantitative evaluation under conditions of physiological and caffeine load.

Susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) has been used for quantitative and non-invasive measurement of blood oxygen saturation in the brain. In this study, we used SWI for quantitative measurement of oxygen saturation in the spinal vein to look for physiological- or caffeine-induced changes in venous oxygenation. SWI measurements were obtained for 5 healthy volunteers using 1.5-T MR units, under 1) 3 kinds of physiological load (breath holding, Bh; hyperventilation, Hv; and inspiration of highly concentrated oxygen, Ox) and 2) caffeine load. Oxygen saturation in the anterior spinal vein (ASV) wa

Physiology assessment in bifurcation percutaneous coronary intervention: Insights from PROGRESS-BIFURCATION registry.

Fractional flow reserve (FFR) and non-hyperemic pressure ratios (NHPR) are established physiologic indices that can help inform the need for percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), however, their use in patients undergoing bifurcation PCI is uncertain. The PROGRESS-BIFURCATION study is an ongoing multi-center, international registry conducted across six centers. Among 2494 bifurcation lesions treated (2271 patients), only 158 (6.3 %) had pressure-wire based physiology assessment. Pre-PCI, 127 (5.1 %) lesions had assessments of the main vessel (MV), 32 (1.3 %) of the side branches (SB), and 1

A Natural-Position X-Ray for Evaluating Cervical Vertebra Physiology Curvature Before and After Conservative Treatment.

BACKGROUND Abnormal physiological curvature is one of the symptoms of early cervical spondylosis. An X-ray taken with the patient standing in a natural position can best reflect the real cervical vertebra physiological curvature. The purpose of this research was to study the value of natural-position X-ray in evaluating cervical vertebra physiology curvature before and after conservative treatment. MATERIAL AND METHODS This study included 135 participants of different ages diagnosed with cervical disease and who received conservative treatment for more than 12 months. The natural- and regular-

Hyperoxia Reprogrammes Microvascular Endothelial Cell Response to Hypoxia in an Organ-Specific Manner.

Organ function relies on microvascular networks to maintain homeostatic equilibrium, which varies widely in different organs and during different physiological challenges. The endothelium role in this critical process can only be evaluated in physiologically relevant contexts. Comparing the responses to oxygen flux in primary murine microvascular EC (MVEC) obtained from brain and lung tissue reveals that supra-physiological oxygen tensions can compromise MVEC viability. Brain MVEC lose mitochondrial activity and undergo significant alterations in electron transport chain (ETC) composition when

Comparison of race-specific and race-neutral spirometry equations on the classification of restrictive lung physiology, interstitial lung disease, and lung transplant referral eligibility.

BACKGROUND: Race-specific reference equations for spirometry, including forced vital capacity (FVC), are under scrutiny in interstitial lung disease (ILD). Their influence on ILD and transplant decision-making warrants study. METHODS: We performed a retrospective cohort study of adults with FVC measurements at Duke University Medical Center between October 1, 2014 and February 1, 2023. Using Global Lung Initiative 2012 reference equations, we compared how race-specific and race-neutral equations classified FVC with potential restrictive physiology (z-score < -2). In the subgroup of patients d

Magnetic Resonance Imaging Evaluation of Functional Differences Between In Vivo Human Kidneys and Discarded Human Kidneys During Ex Vivo Normothermic Machine Perfusion.

BACKGROUND: With increasing interest in renal normothermic machine perfusion (NMP), a deeper understanding of ex vivo renal physiology is essential to establish NMP as a robust pre-transplant assessment platform. This study utilized magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to compare in vivo renal physiology in healthy volunteers with ex vivo renal function of human donor kidneys during NMP. METHODS: Multiparametric MRI maps assessing water diffusion, oxygenation, tissue characteristics, and perfusion were obtained from 11 healthy volunteers to define an in vivo renal reference frame. Ultrafast complex-valued 4D fMRI reveals sleep-induced brain respiratory pulsation changes in both magnitude and phase signals.

Physiological brain pulsations play a critical role in sleep physiology, but their underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. To study these pulsations more deeply, we employed ultrafast magnetic resonance encephalography (MREG) to capture complex-valued 4D fMRI brain data at a critical 10 Hz sampling rate in healthy volunteers during wakefulness and sleep. We compared the phase and magnitude components of the MREG signal, as the phase component is known to be particularly sensitive to subtle flow and susceptibility changes, offering insights beyond magnitude-only analysis. This approach

Estradiol Protects against Noise-Induced Hearing Loss and Modulates Auditory Physiology in Female Mice.

Recent studies have identified sex-differences in auditory physiology and in the susceptibility to noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). We hypothesize that 17β-estradiol (E2), a known modulator of auditory physiology, may underpin sex-differences in the response to noise trauma. Here, we gonadectomized B6CBAF1/J mice and used a combination of electrophysiological and histological techniques to study the effects of estrogen replacement on peripheral auditory physiology in the absence of noise exposure and on protection from NIHL. Functional analysis of auditory physiology in gonadectomized female

Physiological assessment of coronary microvascular dysfunction and short-term outcomes in severely calcified coronary lesions: a comparison between rotational atherectomy and intravascular lithotripsy.

Coronary artery calcification (CAC), one of the greatest challenges of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), is associated with a poor prognosis. We therefore conducted a wire-derived physiological evaluation to investigate the influence of CAC modification using intravascular lithotripsy (IVL) and rotational atherectomy (RA) on the coronary circulation. A total of 154 patients with CAC requiring IVL or RA were enrolled in this single-center, retrospective study. Physiological assessments, particularly Index of microcirculatory resistance (IMR), coronary flow reserve (CFR), resistive reser

Distinct implications of body mass index in different subgroups of nonobese patients with heart failure with preserved ejection fraction: a latent class analysis of data from the TOPCAT trial.

BACKGROUND: Obesity is a well-defined risk factor for heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF), but it is associated with a better prognosis in patients with diagnosed HFpEF. The paradoxically poor prognosis in nonobese patients with HFpEF may be driven by a subset of high-risk patients, which suggests that the nonobese HFpEF subpopulation is heterogeneous. METHODS: Latent class analysis (LCA) was adopted to identify the potential subgroups of 623 nonobese patients enrolled in the TOPCAT trial. The baseline characteristics of the identified nonobese subgroups were compared with

Mitigating the adverse effects of urban environmental stress on individuals through piano performance with a natural theme: a case study from biophilia to soundscape healing.

Urban traffic-related air pollution and noise not only exert direct adverse effects on human health but also influence how individuals perceive and respond to these environmental stressors. The low-intervention strategies (e.g., outdoor music) have attracted increasing attention for their potential to alleviate physiological responses and discomfort induced by traffic-emitted pollution. The present study focuses on the mitigating effects of outdoor piano performance on the physiological responses of individuals exposed to traffic-related air pollution and noise. Field measurements are conducte
