Acantholytic foci have been reported several times in pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP). Lichenoid tissue reactions were also mentioned in the literature regarding PRP. We report a 58-year-old patient who, after having colon cancer, had PRP with biopsies showing acantholytic lesions and a heavy lichenoid lymphocytic infiltration. The purpose of this study was to investigate the epidemiological features of pityriasis rosea (PR) in the Eastern Anatolia, Turkey. Three hundred ninety-one patients (214 females, 177 males) with PR seen during the years 1992-1995 were analyzed for annual incidence among dermatologic outpatients, sex, age, and distribution by month and year. The average annual incidence was 0.75 per 100 dermatologic patients. PR was reported to be slightly more common in women by margin of 1.2:1.0. A rapid plasma reagin (RPR) test was performed in fifty patients with a clinical diagnosis of pityriasis rosea to determine the frequency of syphilis as the underlying cause of the eruption. In none of the fifty patients was syphilis the cause. Experience in diagnosing skin diseases, frequency of syphilis in the community served, and the characteristics of the individual eruption are important factors in the decision to perform an RPR test.

Plasma cortisol levels were estimated in 49 patients having pityriasis versicolor and compared with the values obtained in 50 healthy controls and 23 Patients (matched for age) with dermatological problems other than Pityriasis versicolor. Only healthy patients systemic disease and history of drug intake, were taken for this study. Mean plasma cortisol levels in the patients with pityriasis versicolor, (38.43 + 25.27 ug.dl) were significantly elevated as compared with normal Controls (18,8 + 3.16ug/dl) and dermatological patients without pityriasis versicolor (16.11 + 5.64 ug/dl).

The association of pityriasis rubra pilaris (PRP) with an underlying disease is unusual. A case of a PRP-like eruption presenting as the initial manifestation of acute stem cell leukemia is reported. Other noncutaneous diseases previously reported in association with PRP are reviewed. Other cutaneous lesions associated with leukemia are also briefly described.

A population-based epidemiologic study of pityriasis rosea was developed for Rochester, MN, for a recent 10-year period. Nine hundred thirty-nine patients with pityriasis rosea (340 male patients and 599 female patients) who resided within Rochester city limits at the time the diagnosis was made were included. A patient with clinical and histologic features of epidermolysis bullosa dystrophica-recessive (EBD-R) developed superimposed clinical lesions of pityriasis rosea (PR). Electron microscopy showed distinct "blebbing" of basal cells at the basement membrane zone in clinically normal skin of a non-predilected area, as well as in scarred skin from a predilected area and a lesion of PR. An increased susceptibility of the basement membrane zone to proteolytic enzymes is suggested as a possible hypothesis to explain these observations.

The age and seasonal incidence of 2610 patients with pityriasis versicolor in Greece were studied. Determination of the pH of Na and K ions of the sweat and the microbiol flora of the skin of pityriasis versicolor patients was undertaken.
