Sickle cell disease (SCD) is associated with severe systemic complications and increased mortality risk. Predicting SCD severity is currently difficult because of a lack of biomarkers. Here, we measured 5411 plasma proteins in 376 patients with SCD and 103 participants without SCD to find new predictors of SCD mortality. We report the case of a 66-year-old man with a known history of IgD multiple myeloma (MM) which was admitted to hospital because of acute renal failure. Routine PCR testing on admission yielded a positive result for SARS-CoV-2 infection. Plasma cell disorders are a heterogeneous group caused by the monoclonal proliferation of lymphoplasmacytic cells in the bone marrow. Multiple Myeloma (MM) is the most serious and prevalent plasma cell dyscrasia, with a median age of onset of 60 years.MM displays significant genetic, biological and clinical heterogeneity with subsequent imaging heterogeneity, evident in contemporary imaging modalities (PET/CT and MRI). Evidence suggests that MM is always preceded by precursor stages of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS) and smoldering multiple myeloma.
