Epidemiology of the Hill Tribe HIV/AIDS Populations, Thailand.

OBJECTIVE: A retrospective cohort study was conducted to determine the situation and factors related to the death among the HIV/AIDS Hill tribe in Northern Thailand. MATERIAL AND METHOD: A systematic data-reviewing approach was used to identify the information from the rosters of ARV clinics, OPD cards, and laboratory reports from 16 hospitals in Chiang Rai Province, Thailand. The data were collected from the first reported HIV/AIDS case of the Hill tribe to the end of 2010. A logistic regression models were used to identify associations. A p-value <0.05 was considered as a statistical signif

Indigenous housing and health in the Canadian North: Revisiting cultural safety.

In this article, I explore the relationship between housing, home and health amongst Indigenous homeless people living in the Canadian North. In particular, I examine the ways in which Indigenous homemaking practices conflict with housing policy, and exacerbate individual pathways to homelessness. I argue that integral components in northern Indigenous conceptualizations of home and, in turn, health are not only unrecognized in housing policy, but actively discouraged. The potential for homemaking to inform health and housing policy speaks to the relevance of cultural safety not only to Indige

[Problems in the genetics of peptic ulcer. II. An analysis of the associations of the disease with certain simply heritable traits].

The research of distribution of blood group ABO, Rhesus, Lewis, Secretor, C5+-component of choline esterase and the ability to taste PTC among Moscow population patients suffering from duodenal ulcer is carried out in comparison with the control. Statistically authentic association of the disease with 0(I) blood group, unsecretor and the association of joint signs (coefficients of association are 1.32, 2.17 and 2.62 respectively) is found. Authenticity of relation with disease is not proved during the investigation of other signs. The values of risk to fall ill for the patients possessing and

[Population migration and the epidemic process in opisthorchiasis].

A correlation between opisthorchiasis epidemic process and population migration is reviewed at the third stage of the migration process (the formation of the migration flow, resettlement as such, and settlement of migrants in a new place) in view of the prevention of infection in conditions of the population migration. The endemic situation in the areas between which there is population migration is considered as the initial point. A simplified method for the calculation of the number of infected persons among the migrants from the endemic territories is described.

Impact of Social Vulnerability, Race, and Urbanicity on Surgical Timing for Patients With Craniosynostosis.

BackgroundPrior studies have linked the timing of craniosynostosis surgeries to several postoperative outcomes. However, less is known regarding the influence of sociodemographic factors on surgical timing for this population. This study investigates the influence of social vulnerability index (SVI), race, and urbanicity on the timing of craniosynostosis surgery.MethodsRetrospective data from 2013 to 2023 were queried from Cosmos, a national deidentified database from Epic electronic health record. Patients were stratified into sociodemographic cohorts, and chi-square tests were used to compar

Health status of particularly vulnerable tribal groups (PVTGs) of Odisha: a narrative review.

There are 75 identified Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) in India of which the highest numbers i.e., 13 PVTGs reside in Odisha. Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups (PVTGs) are indigenous communities distinguished by their unique cultural practices, traditional lifestyles, and geographical isolation. Their health status is often precarious due to strong traditional health practices, limited access to healthcare, inadequate nutrition, and exposure to community-acquired diseases. This review aims to explore the health status of all 13 PVTGs in Odisha, analyzing 67 studies from vari

The War on Drugs That Wasn't: Wasted Whiteness, "Dirty Doctors," and Race in Media Coverage of Prescription Opioid Misuse.

The past decade in the U.S. has been marked by a media fascination with the white prescription opioid cum heroin user. In this paper, we contrast media coverage of white non-medical opioid users with that of black and brown heroin users to show how divergent representations lead to different public and policy responses. A content analysis of 100 popular press articles from 2001 and 2011 in which half describe heroin users and half describe prescription opioid users revealed a consistent contrast between criminalized urban black and Latino heroin injectors with sympathetic portrayals of suburba

Lactase persistence-related genetic variant: population substructure and health outcomes.

Lactase persistence is an autosomal-dominant trait that is common in European-derived populations. A basic tendency for lactase persistence to increase from the southeast to the northwest across European populations has been noted, but such trends within countries have not been extensively studied. We genotyped the C/T(-13910) variant (rs4988235) that constitutes the putatively causal allele for lactase persistence (T allele representing persistence) in a general population sample of 3344 women aged 60-79 years from 23 towns across Britain. We found an overall frequency of 0.253 for the C (lac

Seasonal variation in prevalence of Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and Neoehrlichia mikurensis in Ixodes ricinus nymphs in southern Norway.

BACKGROUND: Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (s. l.) and Neoehrlichia mikurensis are the most prevalent pathogenic bacteria found in Ixodes ricinus in Norway. Here we evaluate the prevalence of both bacteria and the density of infected ticks, key factors to assess the human infection risk. The study was performed in one location in southern Norway. RESULTS: An overall prevalence of 12% for B. burgdorferi s. l. and 8% for N. mikurensis was found. The most prevalent B. burgdorferi s. l. genospecies was Borrelia afzelii, followed by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu stricto and Borrelia garinii. The hig

Disaster colonialism: indigenous tribal community responses to Typhoon Morakot in southern Taiwan.

Limited research has been conducted to date on how disaster colonialism shapes, maintains, or destroys social organisations and relationships within indigenous societies. This study was conducted within the Hot Spring Tribal Community (HSTC) of the Rukai people, one of 16 indigenous groups in Taiwan, in the aftermath of Typhoon Morakot in 2009. Based on ethnographic research, the study reveals that the HSTC had endured more than a century of colonialism, resulting in an 'unnatural' disaster long before the storm struck the island. The impact of colonial forces intensified through a variety of

Situational analysis of pesticide poisoning and perceptions of autoinjector devices in rural communities in Sri Lanka - a study protocol.

Intentional and unintentional pesticide poisoning is an important public health problem, especially in low- and middle-income countries. Individuals who have been exposed to toxic pesticides, particularly organophosphorus insecticides, need early treatment. Atropine autoinjector devices offer a potential solution, allowing storage of effective treatment near agricultural workers' fields and homes that could be reached within minutes by the worker or fellow villagers to provide first-line emergency care. Here we present the design of a qualitative, formative study that will constitute the first

Arts-Based Research Methods to Explore Cancer in Indigenous Communities.

BACKGROUND: Indigenous peoples experience an inequitable burden of cancer compared with other populations. The arts can serve as a culturally relevant cancer intervention and research method. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted to determine how arts-based research methods have been used to address cancer in Indigenous peoples. Literature searches identified 129 publications; 32 were selected for review. The following data were extracted: communities employing arts-based cancer research, cancer control continuum stages, cancer types, art forms, and methodologies. RESULTS: Most studies wer

Trauma-informed Approaches to Substance Use Interventions with Indigenous Peoples: A Scoping Review.

Indigenous Peoples experience disproportionately higher rates of problematic substance use. These problems are situated in a context of individual and intergenerational trauma from colonization, residential schools, and racist and discriminatory practices, policies, and services. Therefore, substance use interventions need to adopt a trauma-informed approach. We aimed to synthesize and report the current literature exploring the intersection of trauma and substance use interventions for Indigenous Peoples. Fourteen databases were searched using keywords for Indigenous Peoples, trauma, and subs

A systematic review and meta-analysis of the prevalence of human papillomavirus infection in Indigenous populations - A Global Picture.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Recent trends have shown a decline in the rates of human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated cervical cancer in the vaccinated population but there has been a spike in the HPV-associated oropharyngeal, anal and penile cancers in the majority of the unvaccinated population which are young and middle-aged males. Indigenous populations at an international level carry a disproportionate burden of most diseases. The aim of this meta-analysis was to ascertain the worldwide prevalence of HPV infection in Indigenous populations stratified by sex and site and to document the most common

Understanding hard-to-reach communities: local perspectives and experiences of trachoma control among the pastoralist Maasai in northern Tanzania.

As progress to eliminate trachoma is made, addressing hard-to-reach communities becomes of greater significance. Areas in Tanzania, inhabited by the Maasai, remain endemic for trachoma. This study assessed the effectiveness of Mass Drug Administration (MDA) through an ethnographic study of trachoma amongst a Maasai community. The MDA experience in the context of the livelihoods of the Maasai in a changing political economy was explored using participant observation and household interviews. Factors influencing MDA effectiveness within five domains were analysed. 1) Terrain of intervention: Hum
