An interpretable machine-learning framework for screening psychological distress in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis.

BACKGROUND: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is associated with a substantial psychological burden, yet tools for identifying patients with psychological distress are lacking in otolaryngologic practice. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate an interpretable machine-learning model for screening psychological distress in patients with CRS. METHODS: This multicenter study used preoperative data from 408 adults with CRS undergoing endoscopic sinus surgery and an independent external validation cohort of 61 patients. Psychological distress was assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale. A

The effects of paced breathing on psychological distress vulnerability and heart rate variability in adults sustaining traumatic injury.

BACKGROUND: Traumatic physical injuries can lead to psychological distress and increased risk of psychiatric disorders, often reflected in dysregulated autonomic responses measurable through heart rate variability (HRV). Slow-paced breathing has shown potential in enhancing HRV, but its effectiveness in injured survivors remains unexplored. This study investigates the effect of slow-paced breathing on HRV among injured survivors compared to non-injured individuals and explores the influence of psychological distress and spontaneous respiratory rate on this effect. METHODS: The study involved

Screening for Psychological Distress and Risk of Cardiovascular Disease and Related Mortality: A SYSTEMATIZED REVIEW, META-ANALYSIS, AND CASE FOR PREVENTION.

BACKGROUND: Psychological distress-elevated symptoms of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or psychosocial stress-has been associated with risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Despite increasing attention to the importance of these factors for CVD prevention, the state of this science requires updated synthesis to enable practice recommendations. Moreover, it is unknown whether psychological distress based on screeners, validated self-report instruments that efficiently identify those who may require mental health services or additional support, is associated with in

How do lifestyle choices affect the link between living alone and psychological distress in older age? Results from the AgeHeaPsyWel-HeaSeeB study.

BACKGROUND: Social isolation is widespread and strongly associated with worsening health-related outcomes across the life-course. Despite this broad base of knowledge, there is a paucity of research on the interactive effect of lifestyle choices and living arrangements on later life psychological state particularly in low- and middle-income settings. The aim of this study is to examine the influence of living alone on psychological distress in older people and to explore the protective roles of social participation and physical activity participation. METHODS: We used cross-sectional data fro

Psychological responses and coping strategies among patients with malignant melanoma: a systematic review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: To conduct a systematic review of the literature to identify the prevalence of, and demonstrated risk factors for, psychological distress among individuals affected by, or at high risk of developing, melanoma. For a substantial subset of patients, the diagnosis and/or treatment of cutaneous malignant melanoma may cause significant psychological distress. DATA SOURCES: Using the MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and CINAHL databases, published studies (1988 to March 2008) of individuals affected by melanoma were included if they examined the demographic, clinical, psychological, and/or social corr

Masculinity and Mental Health: The Mediating Role of Normative Male Alexithymia.

The study of psychology of men and masculinity received scientific attention through a more recent focus on its connection with the expression of emotions in men. There had been a long held proposition regarding the conformity to stereotypic masculine beliefs among men and its effect on their mental health. Therefore, the present study was designed to explore the impact of masculinity and normative male alexithymia (NMA) on the mental health of men from Pakistani origin. Assessment measures included a demographic form, the Masculine Behavior Scale (MBS), the Normative Male Alexithymia Scale (N

The prevalence, severity and chronicity of abuse towards older men: Insights from a multinational European survey.

BACKGROUND: Elder abuse is a growing public health question among policy makers and practitioners in many countries. Research findings usually indicate women as victims, whereas male elder abuse still remains under-detected and under-reported. We aimed to investigate the prevalence, severity and chronicity of abuse (psychological, physical, physical injury, sexual, and financial) against older men, and to scrutinize factors (e.g. demographics) associated with high chronicity of any abuse. METHODS: Randomly selected older men (n = 1908) aged 60-84 years from seven European cities (Ancona, Athe

Of the total sample, 74.4% ( n = 134) of the addicted women had been victims of abuse. Psychological abuse affected 66.1% ( n = 119) of the patients, followed by physical abuse (51.7%; n = 93) and sexual abuse (31.7%;

Fear-related psychological experiences in people with Parkinson's disease: a systematic review of qualitative studies.

BACKGROUND: Fear is a multifaceted and pervasive phenomenon among people with Parkinson's disease. Although some qualitative studies have explored fear-related psychological experiences in this population, there remains a lack of comprehensive integration of these insights. This study aimed to synthesize existing qualitative research on fear-related emotional experiences in people with Parkinson's disease, and to provide a theoretical basis for developing effective psychological interventions in clinical practice. METHODS: A comprehensive computer-based search was conducted across 11 database

A Mixed Methods Evaluation of Psychological Skills Training for Level 1 Cancer Care Staff.

BACKGROUND: The need for psychological skills training among the cancer workforce has been recognised since NHS recommendations (2004) suggested that more holistic support is needed to address the psychosocial impact of cancer. Previous research has focused on the development of training for clinical staff, however with supportive roles (such as Care Navigators) developing to include increased patient contact. This service evaluation aims to address the gaps in training for this staff group. AIMS: We aimed to evaluate a one-day training package developed and delivered at Calderdale and Hudder

Videoconferencing psychological therapy and anxiety: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: The growing worldwide prevalence of individuals with anxiety disorders has increased needs for mental health services. Due to limited number of mental health providers and community resources, especially in low-income countries, individuals often seek services from primary care settings. Through collaborative care models, services via telemedicine address the mental health provider shortage. While previous reviews show telemedicine effectively treats mental illness, a gap exists for reviews on videoconferencing psychological therapy for anxiety treatment. OBJECTIVE: This systemati

Implications of a paediatrician-psychologist tandem for sickle cell disease care and impact on cognitive functioning.

UNLABELLED: Sickle cell disease (SCD), a life-threatening chronic disease, necessitates a paediatric treatment plan that considers the influence of psychological, family and intercultural factors. At the Louis-Mourier Hospital (APHP) in Colombes, France, we introduced an original paediatric-psychological partnership where a clinical psychologist accompanies the paediatrician at programmed consultations. We evaluated children and their parents treated in Colombes and in two other paediatric units using standardized culture-free tools and clinical interviews to evaluate the psychological repercu

The tense, the hostile and the distressed: multidimensional psychosocial risk profiles based on the ESC interview in coronary artery disease patients - the THORESCI study.

BACKGROUND: While single psychosocial factors have been associated with cardiovascular outcomes, it is still unclear how they cluster. Therefore, we examined whether latent multidimensional psychosocial risk profiles could be identified in the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) psychosocial screening interview. Additionally we examined whether these profiles were associated with specific sociodemographic, clinical, and psychosocial characteristics. METHOD: 681 coronary artery disease patients (age=64.9±10.6; 80% men) completed the ESC interview, comprising 15 items on 7 predefined component
