Development and Validation of Algorithms to Predict Activity, Mobility, and Memory Limitations Using Medicare Claims and Post-Acute Care Assessments.

Functional impairment predicts mortality and health care utilization. However, validated measures of functional impairment are not routinely collected during clinical encounters and are impractical to use for large-scale risk-adjustment or targeting interventions. This study's purpose was to develop and validate claims-based algorithms to predict functional impairment using Medicare Fee-for-Service (FFS) 2014-2017 claims data linked with post-acute care (PAC) assessment data and weighted to better represent the overall Medicare FFS population. Using supervised machine learning, predictors were

A proof of concept of a machine learning algorithm to predict late-onset 21-hydroxylase deficiency in children with premature pubic hair.

In children with premature pubarche (PP), late onset 21-hydroxylase deficiency (21-OHD), also known as non-classical congenital adrenal hyperplasia (NCCAH), can be routinely ruled out by an adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) test. Using liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS), a quantitative assay of the circulating steroidome can be obtained from a single blood sample. We hypothesized that, by applying multivariate machine learning (ML) models to basal steroid profiles and clinical parameters of 97 patients, we could distinguish children with PP from those with NCCAH, withou

Applying the Rapid OPPERA Algorithm to Predict Persistent Pain Outcomes Among a Cohort of Women Undergoing Breast Cancer Surgery.

Persistent postmastectomy pain after breast surgery is variable in duration and severity across patients, due in part to interindividual variability in pain processing. The Rapid OPPERA Algorithm (ROPA) empirically identified 3 clusters of patients with different risk of chronic pain based on 4 key psychophysical and psychosocial characteristics. We aimed to test this type of group-based clustering within in a perioperative cohort undergoing breast surgery to investigate differences in postsurgical pain outcomes. Women (N = 228) scheduled for breast cancer surgery were prospectively enrolled i

Incident atrial fibrillation and its risk prediction in patients developing COVID-19: A machine learning based algorithm approach.

BACKGROUND: The elderly multi-morbid patient is at high risk of adverse outcomes with COVID-19 complications, and in the general population, the development of incident AF is associated with worse outcomes in such patients. There is therefore the need to identify those patients with COVID-19 who are at highest risk of developing incident AF. We therefore investigated incident AF risks in a large prospective population of elderly patients with/without incident COVID-19 cases and baseline cardiovascular/non-cardiovascular multi-morbidities. We used two approaches: main effect modeling and second

Predicting the crystal structure of [Formula: see text] high energy density material using ab initio evolutionary algorithms.

[Formula: see text] is the first successfully synthesized salt that has a polymeric nitrogen moeity ([Formula: see text]). Although 12 other [Formula: see text] salts followed, with [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] being the most stable, the crystal structure of [Formula: see text] remains unknown. Currently, it is impossible to experimentally determine the structures of [Formula: see text] due to its marginal stability and explosive nature. Here, following an ab initio evolutionary prediction and using only the stoichiometry of [Formula: see text] as a starting point, we were able

An enhanced methodology for predicting protein-protein interactions between human and hepatitis C virus via ensemble learning algorithms.

Hepatitis C virus (HCV) is responsible for a variety of human life-threatening diseases, which include liver cirrhosis, chronic hepatitis, fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) . Computational study of protein-protein interactions between human and HCV could boost the findings of antiviral drugs in HCV therapy and might optimize the treatment procedures for HCV infections. In this analysis, we constructed a prediction model for protein-protein interactions between HCV and human by incorporating the features generated by pseudo amino acid compositions, which were then carried out at two l

Optimized Neural Network Based on Genetic Algorithm to Construct Hand-Foot-and-Mouth Disease Prediction and Early-Warning Model.

Accompanied by the rapid economic and social development, there is a phenomenon of the crazy spread of many infectious diseases. It has brought the rapid growth of the number of people infected with hand-foot-and-mouth disease (HFMD), and children, especially infants and young children's health is at great risk. So it is very important to predict the number of HFMD infections and realize the regional early-warning of HFMD based on big data. However, in the current field of infectious diseases, the research on the prevalence of HFMD mainly predicts the number of future cases based on the number
