Liver structure and function in print workers exposed to toluene.

An unresolved controversy is whether exposure to organic solvents in the workplace causes hepatotoxicity. From a medical surveillance study of 289 printing factory employees who were exposed primarily to toluene, we identified eight workers who had persistently abnormal serum transaminase and/or alkaline phosphatase values. The eight men were generally healthy and gave no history of taking medications or of drinking ethanol to excess. None was obese or diabetic. Six patients had hepatomegaly based on physical examination. All eight had mild elevations (less than 2 to 3 times the upper value of…

3D printing combined with pH-induced 4D printed iron(III)-oxidized starch gels for controlled iron delivery and enhanced iron supplementation.

Iron deficiency anemia (IDA) necessitates effective iron supplementation with high bioavailability and controlled release. This study developed 4D-printed ferric-oxidized starch gels (4D-FeOMS) as a stimulus-responsive platform for targeted iron delivery. By combining hot-extrusion 3D printing with pH-triggered 4D transformation, Fe3+ was effectively coordinated within oxidized starch networks via ionic crosslinking. Rheological analysis revealed Fe3+ hydrolysis disrupted starch molecular hydrogen bonding and reducing molecular weight, leading to diminished gel network uniformity and density. …

High-Performance SnO2 Ink for Detecting Low-Temperature H2S Gas with Advanced Dispensing Printing Technology.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a highly toxic and environmentally hazardous gas, necessitating sensitive and reliable detection at trace concentrations. In this study, a dispensing-printed SnO2-based MEMS gas sensor was developed using a sol-gel-derived SnO2 precursor ink deposited directly onto a Pt-interdigitated micro-hotplate. The precursor ink was optimized for dispensing printing and subsequently annealed at 450 °C to produce a crystalline SnO2 sensing layer. XRD and FTIR analyses confirmed the formation of crystalline tetragonal rutile SnO2 and characteristic Sn-O bonding, while FE-SEM revea…

Direct Laser Printing of 3D Porous Ni(OH)2/NiO Microarchitectures via Confined Interfacial Nucleation.

Transition-metal hydroxides and oxides are widely used in optoelectronic and electrochemical devices, yet precise control over their three-dimensional (3D) microarchitecture and morphology remains a major challenge for microscale device fabrication. Here, we report a laser-confined interfacial nucleation and hierarchical growth (LCING) strategy that enables direct laser printing of Ni(OH)2/NiO microarchitectures with high spatial resolution and programmable porous structures. The localized photothermal field drives interfacial nucleation and hierarchical growth, allowing conformal integration …

Multi-Scale 3D Printing of Magnetic Polymer Nanocomposites with Controlled Particle Dispersion and Hyperthermic Response.

The ability to encode well-defined physical properties and spatiotemporally controlled responses into multifunctional nanocomposites is enabling a new generation of advanced responsive systems. We describe the synthesis of magnetic nanoflowers (NFs) and their full dispersion in PEG-based trimethylolpropane ethoxylate triacrylate (TET) to generate photo-curable nanocomposites. NF-loaded magnetic photocurable TET (Mol. Wt. 912 g mol-1, NF-TET912) is shown to provide full particle dispersion and hence crosslinked polymers with full retention of the AC-field heating response. We demonstrate that t

Engineering Emulgel-Based Inks for 3D Printing Scaffolds with Enhanced Porosity for Supporting Cell Proliferation.

Highly porous hydrogel scaffolds are critical for advancing three-dimensional printing in tissue engineering. Interconnected porous networks facilitate nutrient diffusion, waste removal, and cell infiltration, necessary processes for tissue regeneration. Emulgel-based inks are developed using oil-in-water Pickering emulsions, in which mineral oil serves as a sacrificial porogen within a carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC)/Laponite matrix, with Laponite providing stabilization of the emulsion. Nine formulations are prepared by varying CMC (0.5-1.0 wt %) and mineral oil (10-20 wt %) concentrations at …

Packed Hydrogel Microfibers as Scaffolds Supporting Dynamic Cellular Behavior and Biomaterial Inks in 3D Printing.

Particle-based hydrogels have been used as injectable scaffolds, biomaterial inks for extrusion bioprinting, and permissive systems for 3D cell culture owing to their unique physical properties, including bulk yielding and porosity. These properties are in part governed by interparticle interactions and spatial organization, with limited potential to design these properties in systems based on spherical hydrogel microparticles. Here, we engineer particle-based hydrogels where each particle is a discrete electrospun hydrogel microfiber that has been segmented to a length of 93 ± 51 µm, with a d…

Ethylene-glycol-assisted inkjet printing for controllable CVD growth of 2D MoS2 single-crystal arrays.

High-quality patterned growth of two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) holds significant promise for next-generation electronics. In particular, inkjet printing combined with chemical vapor deposition (CVD) offers distinct advantages such as eliminating the need for seed crystals and masks. However, this method struggles to precisely control nucleation at predetermined sites at high temperatures, hindering concurrent improvements in single-crystal quality and array uniformity. To address this, we developed an ethylene glycol (EG)-assisted nucleation strategy coupled with…

In Situ Casting Integrated with FDM 3D Printing: Curing Behavior, Process Constraints, and Mechanical Demonstration.

Dispensing-based in situ casting offers a practical route for introducing dense or mechanically distinct polymer regions into fused deposition modeling (FDM) parts during fabrication. This study investigates the curing-dependent process constraints governing stable integration of in situ casting within an FDM workflow. In the proposed process, FDM is used to fabricate thermoplastic confinement geometries, after which liquid polymer is dispensed into selected cavities and cured before printing resumes. Two representative curing systems were examined: a UV-curable photopolymer and a two-componen…

High-resolution inkjet printing of polymerized chiral liquid crystal droplets on periodically rotating photoalignment layers.

This research addresses the challenge of controlling complex director fields in confined chiral liquid crystal (CLC) geometries. CLC droplets were inkjet-printed onto high-resolution photoalignment patterns to study the competition among chiral pitch, geometric confinement, and surface-alignment periodicity. Polarized microscopy analysis and conceptual 3D modeling reveal that surface photoalignment dictates the droplet structure, steering the director field independently of the curved droplet's profile. Findings show that at small periods Λ, surface anchoring suppresses domain curvature in fav
