Testosterone, facial symmetry and cooperation in the prisoners' dilemma.

Recent research has analyzed how individual characteristics, like the exposure to different hormones and symmetry, affect decision-making and strategic behaviour. The present article investigates the effect of symmetry, of exposure to testosterone (T) in utero and during puberty and of current T on cooperation in a Prisoners' Dilemma Game (PDG). T is a hormone with well known effect on males' behaviour, and that promotes activities that seek to increase reproductive success. Fluctuating Asymmetry (FA) reflects the ability of the organism to maintain a stable development and it is usually emplo

Frequent complaints of testicular lumps by young prisoners.

The definition of the age of young offenders was changed by an Act of Parliament (The Crime and Disorder Act 1998), which was implemented by the Home Office on 1 April 2000. This Act brought down the upper-age limit of young offenders from 20 to 17. Our objective was to investigate the sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among this redefined group of young offenders. Among various types of STIs, we observed that a significant number of young prisoners had complaints of testicular lumps (35%), which were not reported in the past. We tried to find out the reason for this common complaint and

Physical victimization in prison: the role of mental illness.

This study compares prison physical victimization rates (inmate-on-inmate and staff-on-inmate) for people with mental disorder to those without mental disorder in a state prison system. Inmate subjects were drawn from 14 adult prisons operated by a single mid-Atlantic State. A sample of 7,528 subjects aged 18 or older (7,221 men and 564 women) completed an audio-computer administered survey instrument. Mental disorder was based on self-reported mental health treatment ever for particular mental disorders. Approximately one-quarter of the sample reported some prior treatment for schizophrenia, …

Pulmonary tuberculosis in the Central Prison of Douala, Cameroon.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of and factors associated with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) in an urban prison in sub-Saharan Africa. DESIGN: A cross-sectional survey. SETTING: The Central Prison of Douala, Cameroon. RESULTS: Two thousand four hundred and seventy four (87.4%) out of 2830 inmates underwent screening. Twenty seven (1.1%) of the inmates were under treatment for smear-positive PTB on commencement of the survey while 60 (2.4%) were diagnosed with smear and/or culture-positive PTB during the active case finding, resulting in a point prevalence of PTB of 3.5%. HIV seropreva

Oral ivermectin for the treatment and prophylaxis of scabies in prison.

INTRODUCTION: Oral ivermectin has been widely used to treat various human diseases, such as filariasis, myiasis, larva migrans, strongyloidiasis and scabies (both the common and crusted forms). However, there are only a small number of papers on the effects of this drug for the control of scabies in infested environments. The current study shows the results obtained with the collective treatment of inmates of a public jail. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 123 inmates living in a restricted and contaminated environment were evaluated clinically by experienced dermatologists for the assessmen

[Prevalence of tuberculosis infection prevalence in a provincial prison].

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis in prisons is a serious public health problem. In those penitentiaries with a high prevalence of co-infection by M. tuberculosis and HIV infection, the treatment of the tubercular infection can be an important tool for prevention and control. Ascertaining the prevalence of tubercular infection, the access and adherence to the treatment of tubercular infection in a prison population without a history of treatment of tubercular disease or infection could be of great interest in order to assess the efficacy of this measure. METHODS: A cross study was made of the populati…

[The demand for emergency medical care by the prison population].

BACKGROUND: Urgent medical claim from recluse population shows some special traits due to firstly, the reclusion situation itself and the high prevalence of certain diseases in this population, as the infections ones, such as HIV infection, hepatitis B and tuberculosis. Moreover, emergency rooms constitute for this patients, a common previous admission place. Thus, a high and a complex medical care claim must be expected from this population in hospital emergency rooms. METHODS: Consultations from ill prisoners examined in emergency room of Hospital Clinic Internal Medicine department during

Anonymous HIV surveillance in Saughton Prison, Edinburgh.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the prevalence of HIV by anonymous saliva testing in Her Majesty's Prison, Saughton (Saughton Prison), Edinburgh, UK. To elicit linked anonymous risk factor information from which to estimate risk scores for those who had taken an HIV blood test and, among drug injectors, for those who were HIV-1-antibody-positive on saliva testing. SETTING: Saughton Prison on 15 and 16 August 1991; HIV Immunology and Regional Virus Laboratories, Edinburgh, and the Medical Research Council Biostatistics Unit, Cambridge, UK. PARTICIPANTS: Male inmates (378 out of a total of 499) of Sau

History of injection drug use in the month preceding incarceration in Iranian prisons.

This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and pattern of injecting drug use (IDU) in Iranian incarcerated people one month before their imprisonment. This cross-sectional study used data from the national Bio-Behavioral Surveillance Surveys conducted from a random sample of people incarcerated in 33 prisons covering the major geographical areas of Iran in 2017 (n = 5,785). A multivariable logistic regression model was used to determine factors related to IDU one month before imprisonment. The lifetime prevalence of IDU among Iranian incarcerated people was 12.2% (95% confidence interval […

Suicide and self-harm in prisons: The challenge of service evaluation and prevention.

Very high rates of suicide and self-harm in prisons worldwide emphasise the need for evidence-based approaches to prevention. Real world evaluations of organisational changes and service developments within prisons could yield important insights, but there are challenges to achieving this, as we found from an evaluation in a single UK institution.

Cold-related Mortality in US State and Private Prisons: A Case-Crossover Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Cold temperatures are associated with increased risk for cardiovascular and respiratory disease mortality. Due to limited temperature regulation in prisons, incarcerated populations may be particularly vulnerable to cold-related mortality. METHODS: We analyzed mortality data in US prisons from 2001 to 2019. Using a case-crossover approach, we estimated the association of a 10 °F decrease in cold temperature and extreme cold (days below the 10th percentile) with the risk of total mortality and deaths from heart disease, respiratory disease, and suicide. We assessed effect modificat…

Detection of the synthetic cathinone N,N-dimethylpentylone in seized samples from prisons.

Drug use is prevalent in prisons with drugs associated with depressant effects found to be more prevalent than stimulants. Synthetic cathinones (SCats; often sold as "bath salts", "ecstasy", "molly", and "monkey dust") are the second largest category of new psychoactive substances (NPS) currently monitored by the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) and are commonly used as substitutes for regulated stimulants, such as amphetamine, cocaine, and MDMA. N,N-dimethylpentylone (also known as dimethylpentylone, dipentylone, and bk-DMBDP) was detected for the first time in…

Phylogeography and transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis spanning prisons and surrounding communities in Paraguay.

Recent rises in incident tuberculosis (TB) cases in Paraguay and the increasing concentration of TB within prisons highlight the urgency of targeting strategies to interrupt transmission and prevent new infections. However, whether specific cities or carceral institutions play a disproportionate role in transmission remains unknown. We conducted prospective genomic surveillance, sequencing 471 Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex genomes, from inside and outside prisons in Paraguay's two largest urban areas, Asunción and Ciudad del Este, from 2016 to 2021. We found genomic evidence of frequent r…
