The Impact of Setting Characteristics on Community Health Worker Roles and COVID-19 Activities: An Examination of the Community Health Workers for COVID Response and Resilient Communities Program.

Objectives. To examine the roles and activities performed by community health workers (CHWs) involved in the national Community Health Workers for COVID Response and Resilient Communities (CCR) program and examine differences based on setting characteristics. Methods. We used data from a CHW self-report survey (n = 689) conducted February through March 2024 in the United States. We ran a series of ordered logistic regression models to examine the association between setting characteristics (i.e., type of organizational setting, organizational experience with CHWs, and populations of focus) and

METHODS: The research employed a simulated patient methodology, involving 296 pharmacists, to assess their ability to identify prohibited substances and provide appropriate anti-doping advice. KEY FINDINGS: The findings reveal that 46.6% of pharmacists could identify salbutamol as a prohibited substance, with only 23.3% providing comprehensive anti-doping guidance. The study highlights a significant knowledge gap, emphasizing the need for enhanced educational progr

The ICU pharmacist's contribution to antimicrobial optimization through routine pharmacist interventions.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobials are among the medication groups most frequently involved in medication errors and adverse drug events in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU). Despite growing evidence supporting the role of Critical Care Pharmacists (CCPs) in antimicrobial stewardship, their integration into ICU teams remains inconsistent across European healthcare systems. METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted over five months in an 18-bed medical-surgical ICU at a tertiary-level hospital in Spain. All admitted patients were included. A specialist pharmacist reviewed daily antimicrobia

The integration of hospital pharmacists into primary care settings in Shenzhen, China: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Integrating hospital pharmacists into primary care settings can enhance the quality of patient care. However, the challenges vary across countries. China has piloted such collaborations between hospital pharmacists and primary care practitioners in recent years, but research on this subject is limited. This study aims to examine the integration of hospital pharmacists into primary care settings in Shenzhen, China, and identify the perceived barriers and facilitators. METHODS: From May 1 to November 30, 2022, a qualitative study gathered key informant interviews and on-site observa

Impact of a pharmacist-led elective caesarean section pre-admission clinic on efficiency of pharmacist workflow and patient preparedness for post-operative discharge medication supply: a retrospective observational study.

INTRODUCTION: Rapid patient throughput on maternity wards results in pharmacist resources being directed towards discharge processes, primarily focused on patients who have undergone caesarean section (CS) due to their discharge medication requirements. This occurs at the expense of admission processes, including best possible medication history (BPMH) documentation. AIM: To evaluate the impact of a pharmacist-led elective caesarean section (ELCS) pre-admission clinic (PAC) on efficiency of pharmacist workflows, BPMH documentation, and patient preparedness for analgesic supply on discharge.

Pharmacist tailored monitoring for patients initiating encorafenib and binimetinib combination therapy.

Introduction: Combination therapy with protein kinase B-raf (BRAF) inhibitor, encorafenib, and mitogen-activated extracellular kinase (MEK) inhibitor, binimetinib, is associated with adverse events (AEs) that can lead to therapy changes early in treatment. This study assessed the impact of pharmacist tailored monitoring on therapy changes during the first 90 days after initiation. Methods: This single center, pre-post intervention study included adult patients initiating encorafenib and binimetinib for unresectable or metastatic melanoma, with prescriptions filled through the center's specialt

Detection of Adverse Medicine Events by Pharmacists in Residential Aged Care Facilities: Secondary Analysis of Data From ReMInDAR Trial.

BACKGROUND: Pharmacists often identify symptoms during medication reviews that may or may not be adverse medicine events (AMEs), but these have not yet been quantified. This study aimed to quantify the extent of these symptoms representing AMEs by comparing them with a known set of AMEs and symptoms listed in existing medicine-related symptom assessment tools. METHOD: A secondary analysis of data from the Reducing Medicine-Induced Deterioration and Adverse Reactions (ReMInDAR) trial was conducted. Adverse events or symptoms were extracted from pharmacists' progress notes, and their frequency

Impact of a pharmacist-led intervention on prostate cancer illness perception.

PURPOSE: Illness perception (IP) significantly determines illness outcomes. This study determined the impact of a pharmacist educational intervention on IP and the predictors of IP in patients with prostate cancer (PCa). METHODS: Using a brief IP questionnaire, an interventional study of patients with PCa was conducted in all cancer reference hospitals in one Nigerian state. After a pre-post assessment of patients' IP, descriptive and inferential statistical analyses were performed. The impact of pharmacists' intervention on IP was determined by paired-sample statistics and correlation analys

Pharmacist assessments and care to improve adult vaccination rates: A report from project IMPACT vaccine confidence.

BACKGROUND: Neglect of vaccination needs among adults results in a needless burden of hospitalization, suffering, and death. America's community pharmacists deliver a substantial portion of adult vaccinations, yet many Americans still have unmet vaccination needs. OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated rates of vaccine contraindications, acceptance, and willingness to be vaccinated among ambulatory adults. PRACTICE DESCRIPTION: This was a prospective, multisite, multistate, observational study conducted in three waves between October 2021 and August 2023. PRACTICE INNOVATION: Pharmacists conducte

Role of new vaccinators/pharmacists in life-course vaccination.

BACKGROUND: Vaccines against diseases such as herpes zoster, pneumococcus and influenza are broadly recommended for older adults, but uptake is frequently low. VACCINATION BOTTLENECK: Part of the reason may be that access to adult vaccination can be problematic, particularly for minorities and other under-served populations. Potential barriers include complex procedures, limited resources in healthcare systems and lack of structured infrastructure. STRESS-TESTING EXPENDED VACCINATION: The Covid-19 pandemic necessitated rapid expansion of the infrastructure to deliver adult vaccination, and t

Development and pharmacist-mediated use of tools for monitoring atypical antipsychotic-induced side effects related to blood glucose levels.

PURPOSE: Drug side effects often lead to serious outcomes. Administration of second-generation antipsychotics has resulted in diabetic ketoacidosis and diabetic coma leading to death. Therefore, pharmacists are required to collect information on clinical test values, determine the appropriate test timing, and coordinate with doctors for further clinical laboratory orders, all of which are labor-intensive and time-intensive tasks. In this study, we developed a side effect-monitoring tool and aimed to clarify the influence and efficiency of monitoring side effects by using the tool in patients t

METHOD: Elderly cancer patients (age ≥65) who were at least on one chronic medication would be eligible for the MTM service. Any DRP that was detected would be recorded and steps to resolve it were taken. Pre- and post-service patient satisfaction surveys (PSS) were

[Determination of death in mobile intensive care units operating without a physician].

Determination of the death of a person is one of the most complex issues in modern medicine. Therefore, in Israel (like many other countries), the authority to determine death belongs solely to medical doctors. Determination of death is a process built from 3 components: the declaration of death, certification of death and registration of death. Declaration of death is based on well established protocols, and is used as the normative basis for ending or avoiding resuscitation efforts in the pre-hospital setting. Certification and registration of death are essential for completion of the proces
