"If I see somebody…I'll immediately scope them out": anorexia nervosa clients' perceptions of their therapists' body.

Although people with eating disorders are known to observe and assess body related stimuli, research has yet to explore these behaviors in the therapy room. Consequently, practitioners do not know if their bodies are having an impact on their clients or the therapy process. This lack of knowledge is problematic given the poor recovery rates and high levels of drop-out in eating disorders treatment. Using semi-structured interviews this study investigated the beliefs and experiences of 11 women diagnosed with anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa with a history of restricting, who had received co

Internet-based treatment for panic disorder: does frequency of therapist contact make a difference?

Internet-based interventions with therapist support have proven effective for treating a range of mental health conditions. This study examined whether frequency of therapist contact affected treatment outcomes. Fifty-seven people with panic disorder (including 32 with agoraphobia) were randomly allocated to an 8-week Internet-based cognitive behavioural treatment intervention (Panic Online) with either frequent (three e-mails per week) or infrequent (one e-mail per week) support from a psychologist. Posttreatment, intention-to-treat analyses revealed that both treatments were effective at imp

A Nutrition Journal and Diabetes Shopping Experience to improve pharmacy students' empathy and cultural competence.

OBJECTIVES: To implement and assess the effectiveness of an exercise designed to develop pharmacy students' empathy toward patients regarding diabetes and obesity and encourage cultural and "economic" competence. DESIGN: Students in the Nutrition Journal and Diabetes Shopping Experience attended a nutrition and weight management lecture, monitored their own nutritional intake by maintaining an online nutrition and exercise journal, and grocery shopped based on an assigned patient scenario. Scenarios varied in terms of income, ethnicity, insurance coverage, family size, grocery store, and medi

Introduction to the special issue on personality assessment in medical settings.

This special issue of the Journal of Personality Assessment brings together 3 review articles and 5 research studies on personality assessment in medical settings that should help clinicians become more familiar with the current status of this field. In 1 review article, Sirri, Fabbri, Fava, and Sonino (2007/this issue) summarize evidence of a new approach to the assessment of psychological syndromes in somatizing patients based on the Diagnostic Criteria for Psychosomatic Research (Fava et al., 1995). The other reviews focus on 2 personality constructs widely used in investigations with medic

Broverman's methodology reversed: assessing university students' perceptions of the gender-role characteristics of counselors.

This study examined university students' perceptions of which gender-role characteristics described helpful counselors for 137 nonmajors from an introduction to counseling class. Using a modification of the Broverman, et al. method (1970) and a modified version of their Stereotype Questionnaire, participants were randomly assigned to one of three conditions. Participants indicated the characteristics of a helpful counselor, a helpful female counselor, or a helpful male counselor using 20 bipolar items of gender-role characteristics. t tests were applied to whether agreement of the pole conside

Violence against women in North America.

Although North America is viewed as a place where women have equal rights and status, violence against women is still rampant. Forty to 51% of women experience some type of violence in their lifetime including child abuse, physical violence, rape and domestic violence. The perpetrator is most likely to be a current or former partner. Such violence stems from historical views of women as property and may flourish because of the public's reluctance to get involved in family matters. The concept of violence has been expanded to include non-traditional types such as sexual harassment, breeches of

The gynecological care experience of adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse: a preliminary investigation.

The gynecological care experiences of 44 adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse and 30 non-abused controls were investigated and compared. On a self-administered survey, survivors rated the gynecological care experience more negatively than the controls, experienced more intensely negative feelings, and reported being more uncomfortable during almost every stage of the gynecological examination than did the controls. Survivors also reported more trauma-like responses during the gynecological examination, including overwhelming emotions, intrusive or unwanted thoughts, memories, body memorie

Elder abuse and dementia--a pilot study.

An anonymous postal questionnaire was distributed to 200 members of a voluntary organisation providing information and support for the carers of dementia sufferers. Carers were asked about the possible occurrence of verbal, physical abuse and neglect. Those carers who admitted to any form of abuse were compared with those who did not and risk factors in both carers and patients were analysed to determine risk factors for abuse. Fifty-five per cent of carers admitted to some form of abuse with verbal abuse being the most common form. Verbal abuse was associated with a poor premorbid relationshi

An analysis of a group teaching procedure for persons with developmental disabilities.

This study evaluated whether a concurrent group teaching procedure, in which all students respond simultaneously, could be used for persons with moderate or severe mental retardation. The teaching procedure used was the Task Demonstration Model, a program based on stimulus-control research and the fading techniques of behavioral psychology. Three teachers and three groups of students participated. Results showed that the teachers increased their rates of questions and instructions, positive feedback, and use of functional materials, but they reduced their rate of prompts to almost zero. Studen

[Psychosocial problems and needs of cancer patients].

A Swedish-American epidemiological study of the psychosocial problems and needs of cancer patients have shown that the personal needs of such individuals are frequently ignored. The Swedish patients requested psychological support more often than the Americans, who instead reported a need for financial assistance. Swedish patients were very rarely offered psychiatric or psychological counselling, while many Americans felt that they had received good support from physicians and other medical personnel. Fourteen per cent of the Swedes and 2.7 per cent of the American patients had no-one to whom

Disguised countertransference in institutions.

The manifest reason for the hospitalization of psychiatric patients is that someone decides that they are in danger of suicide or homicide, or that they are unable sufficiently to care for or manage themselves. From another perspective, however, hospitalization can be understood as a consequence of limitations on the part of the family, the community, or the therapist in managing the affects generated in relation to these patients' behavior and communications. In other words, it is possible that patients may be hospitalized primarily because people in their lives (and often they themselves) ca

Rescue fantasies.

The concept of "rescue fantasy" is examined as it has evolved since Freud introduced it in 1910. Originally designating the wish in certain men to rescue "fallen women," the term has more recently come to refer primarily to the therapist's conscious or unconscious aims with regard to his patient, particularly in the context of child analysis or therapy. The varying drive elements and defensive operations at work in this compromise formation are discussed, and some recent sociocultural influences and analogues are suggested.

Trust, talk and touch in Balkan folk healing.

Broadly based in long-term anthropological fieldwork in the Balkans (in Serbia, Macedonia and Bulgaria), this discussion of folk healing techniques illustrates how convergence in the patient/practitioner relationship is of prime importance in effecting a positive outcome. Sumadija in central Serbia is selected as an example, and treatment for erysipelas, a common health problem which villagers call 'the red wind', is described and analyzed. Against a sociocultural background in which the collective wisdom of the past is retained and transmitted orally to contemporary healers, especially to the

Standardized interviews in psychiatry.

Although they have a long history of use, standardized or structured interviews for the gathering of clinical data in psychiatry have become increasingly popular in the last 10 years. Some definitions of structured interviews and a brief historical review of their use are presented. In addition to enhancing the reliability of symptoms and diagnoses in research, there is evidence that structured interviews improve the comprehensiveness of the data base, and reduce examiner bias. Even in the routine clinical setting, completeness of data collection and accuracy of diagnosis would appear to outwe
