Crossmodal interactions: lessons from synesthesia.

Synesthesia is a condition in which stimulation in one modality also gives rise to a perceptual experience in a second modality. In two recent studies we found that the condition is more common than previously reported; up to 5% of the population may experience at least one type of synesthesia. Although the condition has been traditionally viewed as an anomaly (e.g., breakdown in modularity), it seems that at least some of the mechanisms underlying synesthesia do reflect universal crossmodal mechanisms. We review here a number of examples of crossmodal correspondences found in both synesthetes

Dynamic aspects of accommodation: age and presbyopia.

There has been no comprehensive study involving each of the primary dynamic components of accommodation in the same cohort as related to age and presbyopic onset; furthermore, the current findings are equivocal. Dynamic monocular components of accommodation (latency, time constant, peak velocity/amplitude relationship, and microfluctuations) were assessed objectively using an infrared optometer within the linear region of accommodation in 30 visually-normal human subjects aged 21-50 years. The time constant and the peak velocity/amplitude relationship did not change with age. However, latency

Deficits of motion transparency perception in adult developmental dyslexics with normal unidirectional motion sensitivity.

We assessed motion integration ability in seven adult developmental dyslexics using unidirectional and bidirectional (transparent) random dot kinematograms (RDKs) that varied in the number of frames. All adult dyslexics performed as well as normally reading age-matched controls with unidirectional RDKs, regardless of frame number. However, using orthogonal motion transparent stimuli, deficits were obvious in six dyslexics and depended on frame number. Whereas controls needed on average only 4.4 frames (144 ms) to identify both directions correctly on 75% of presentations, dyslexics needed on a

The stationarity hypothesis: an allocentric criterion in visual perception.

Having long considered that extraretinal information plays little or no role in spatial vision, the study of structure from motion (SfM) has confounded a moving observer perceiving a stationary object with a non-moving observer perceiving a rigid object undergoing equal and opposite motion. However, recently it has been shown that extraretinal information does play an important role in the extraction of structure from motion by enhancing motion cues for objects that are stationary in an allocentric, world-fixed reference frame (Nature 409 (2001) 85). Here, we test whether stationarity per se i

Perceptual learning in primary and secondary motion vision.

Specific improvements of perceptual capabilities with practise are thought to give some clues about cortical plasticity and the localisation of cortical processing. In the present study, perceptual learning is used as a paradigm to separate mechanisms underlying the perception of different classes of motion stimuli. Primary motion stimuli (phi-motion), are characterised by displacements of the luminance distribution. However, for secondary motion stimuli the movement is not accompanied by a corresponding luminance shift. Instead, moving objects are defined by their temporal frequency compositi

[Effect of vibrational factors on the evaluation of whole-body vibrational intensity].

The aim of this study is to obtain basic data useful to evaluate the riding comfort of railway vehicles. The apparatus used in the present experiment made it possible to simulate various vibrations of railway vehicles. Twenty-two adult subjects participated in this experiment. They were exposed to lateral vibration with varying peak and root mean square (rms) accelerations and frequencies. The types and ranges of vibrations used in this experiment approximated to the typical vibrations of railway vehicles. The subjects were asked to rate the intensity of each vibration given to them successive

The interaction of perceived distance with the perceived direction of visual motion during movements of the eyes and the head.

A horizontally moving target was followed by rotation of the eyes alone or by a lateral movement of the head. These movements resulted in the retinal displacement of a vertically moving target from its perceived path, the amplitude of which was determined by the phase and amplitude of the object motion and of the eye or head movements. In two experiments, we tested the prediction from our model of spatial motion (Swanston, Wade, & Day, 1987) that perceived distance interacts with compensation for head movements, but not with compensation for eye movements with respect to a stationary head. In

Dyslexia; ophthalmological aspects 1991.

Dyslexia or specific reading disability is an important and frequent handicap afflicting 5-10% of the population. It is basically a disorder of acquisition of written language, probably due to a poorly developed phonological awareness, which in turn may be neurologically related. As anatomical correlates symmetry of the planum temporale and ectopies in the cerebral cortex have been suggested. Functional correlates are discovered with brain electrical mapping and stimulation of brain structures during neuro surgery. From an ophthalmological point of view there are no relations between dyslexia

New consumption trends in the use of social networks and video games, problematic consumption, and the phenomenon of online gambling.

The inappropriate use of electronic devices can affect the psychological and physical health of children and adolescents. Therefore, it is essential to accompany them and promote media literacy to ensure a healthy and responsible use of technology. On occasions that depend on a multifactorial complex, the inappropriate use of networks can trigger problematic consumption and seriously affect the lives of young people. In 2022, the World Health Organization recognized, through ICD-11, the addiction to video games and used the term "problematic use" for the Internet and social networks. This arti

The pattern of retinal ganglion cell dysfunction in Leber hereditary optic neuropathy.

Leber inherited optic neuropathy (LHON) is characterized by subacute bilateral loss of central vision due to dysfunction and loss of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs). Comprehensive visual electrophysiological investigations (including pattern reversal visual evoked potentials, pattern electroretinography and the photopic negative response) performed on 13 patients with acute and chronic LHON indicate early impairment of RGC cell body function and severe axonal dysfunction. Temporal, spatial and chromatic psychophysical tests performed on 7 patients with acute LHON and 4 patients with chronic LHON

Visual processing in amblyopia: animal studies.

In the past five years, substantial progress has been made in our knowledge of the neural basis of amblyopia. Recent advances based on animal models are described, along with new psychophysical data showing perceptual deficits in amblyopic animals that are not explained by simple losses in contrast sensitivity. Studies of contour integration and integration of motion and form signals in the presence of noise show that 1) there are fundamental losses in temporal as well as spatial vision, 2) the losses extend to the fellow eye in many cases, 3) amblyopic animals are especially impaired in the p

Smell disorders in ENT clinic.

Olfactory disorders may have several causes. Nasal polyposis or chronic sinusitis can result in nasal obstructions that block the access of odorants to the olfactory epithelium, and this can explain the development of olfactory disorders. On the other hand, when nasal endoscopy has revealed that the nasal cleft is free of inflammatory or tumoural disease, olfactory disorders may be explained by neuroepithelial or central nervous system disturbances. This paper will provide information about current approaches to smell disorders in otorhinolaryngology. Major causes will be reviewed as outcomes

Deluding the motor system.

How do we know that our own actions belong to us? How are we able to distinguish self-generated sensory events from those that arise externally? In this paper, I will briefly discuss experiments that were designed to investigate these questions. In particular, I will review psychophysical and neuroimaging studies that have investigated how we recognise the consequences of our own actions, and why patients with delusions of control confuse self-produced and externally produced actions and sensations. Studies investigating the failure of this 'self-monitoring' mechanism in patients with delusion

Dichotic pitch: a new stimulus distinguishes normal and dyslexic auditory function.

Two patterns of appropriately filtered acoustic white noise can be binaurally fused by the human auditory system to extract pitch and location information that is not available to either ear alone. This phenomenon is called dichotic pitch. Here we present a new method for generating more effective and useful dichotic pitch stimuli. These novel stimuli allow the psychophysical assessment of dichotic pitch detection thresholds. We show that dichotic pitch detection is significantly impaired in individuals with developmental dyslexia, as compared to average readers. These results suggest a low-le

Abnormalities of visual function in hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy.

Visual function was studied in a group of 15 patients with hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy (HMSN). Psychophysical measures of luminance and chromatic threshold and temporal contrast sensitivity were undertaken, together with visual evoked potentials (VEPs), visual fields and clinical neuro-ophthalmological examination. A patchy loss of visual function was found in individual cases of HMSN. In the group analysis there was evidence of a selective loss of luminance threshold and temporal contrast sensitivity at low temporal frequencies; the VEP P100 latency was not significantly prolonged

Autosomal dominant congenital stationary night blindness and normal fundus with an electronegative electroretinogram.

We studied three members of three successive generations of a family with autosomal dominant congenital stationary night blindness and normal fundi. Psychophysical studies on two members showed normal final cone thresholds and mildly increased rod thresholds. Full-field electroretinograms on all three members showed normal photopic b-wave amplitudes and implicit times. Under scotopic conditions, the rod response was absent, and with a bright flash stimulus, there was a normal a-wave with no b-wave. This electronegative dark-adapted electroretinogram resembled the Schubert-Bornschein type seen

Loss of human photoreceptor sensitivity associated with chronic exposure to ultraviolet radiation.

The crystalline lens of the human eye absorbs most of the incident ultraviolet radiation (UVR), but when the lens is removed, this radiation can reach the photoreceptors. The consequences of UVR exposure on cone receptor sensitivity were determined from psychophysical measurements in patients who had undergone bilateral cataract extraction and implantation of intraocular lenses (IOLs). The IOL implanted in one eye contained chromophores that absorb incident UVR, whereas that implanted in the other eye transmitted UVR. Five years of exposure to ambient UVR was associated with a selective loss i

Methylphenidate-induced information processing dysfunction in nonschizophrenic patients.

To examine the relationship of aminergic overactivity to information processing, we gave methylphenidate hydrochloride, oxazepam, or placebo to 12 nonpsychotic patients in one-week blocks in a double-blind, randomized design. Methylphenidate induced a pattern of information processing dysfunction similar to that seen in schizophrenic patients, strengthening the linkage of the schizophrenia-information processing dysfunction-aminergic overactivity relationship. Further, the time course of the observed deficits in both schizophrenic and methylphenidate-induced states is strikingly compatible wit

Linear phoneme boundaries for German synthetic two-formant vowels.

The phonetic boundaries of variable, synthetic two-formant vowels were studied in psychophysical tests. In the F1 versus F2 formant plane, vowel boundaries appeared to be straight and all but one were parallel to the formant axes. Discrimination of two of the eight German vowels examined relied within certain boundaries upon information of the frequency of the first formant (F1) independent of that of the second (F2) or vice versa. Two vertical F1 boundaries were common to six vowels and one horizontal F2 boundary was common to five vowels. Interpreted in the light of recent neurophysiological

Anosmia and hypogeusia in Churg-Strauss syndrome.

Churg-Strauss syndrome is a rare disorder that is often misdiagnosed. In this report we describe a 57-year-old man with Churg-Strauss syndrome who presented with symptoms of lessened smell and taste function that occurred approximately 3 months before the onset of his neurological symptoms. Psychophysical testing using a battery of well-validated smell and taste tests revealed that the patient had total anosmia and marked hypogeusia. While one anecdotal report exists in the Spanish literature that alludes to the presence of anosmia in a single case of this syndrome, no further confirmation of
