Reduction in severity of radiation-induced dermatitis in head and neck cancer patients treated with topical aloe vera gel: A randomized multicenter double-blind placebo-controlled trial.

PURPOSE: To assess the efficacy of topical aloe vera gel on radiation induced dermatitis (RID) in head and neck cancer (HNC) patients. METHOD: In this multicenter randomized double-blind controlled study, HNC patients treated with concurrent chemoradiation (CCRT) received either aloe vera gel or placebo gel. Adverse skin toxicity levels were evaluated with the radiation-induced skin reaction assessment scale (RISRAS). RESULTS: One hundred-twenty patients were enrolled in this study. Analysis of the baseline characteristics did not reveal any differences between the groups. The median RISRAS

Long-Term Results of Postoperative Hypofractionated Accelerated Breast and Lymph Node Radiotherapy (HypoAR) with Hypofractionated Boost.

We report long-term results (median follow-up 12 years) of hypofractionated accelerated radiotherapy (HypoAR) in patients treated with breast-conserving surgery. In total, 367 women were treated with HypoAR. Axillary and supraclavicular area (ASA) were treated in patients with involved nodes. In total, 290 patients (scheme A) received 3.5 Gy/day ×10 fractions (breast/ASA) followed by two 4 Gy fractions with electrons to the affected breast quadrant within 16 days. In total, 77 patients (Scheme B) received 2.7 Gy/day for 16 consecutive fractions (breast/ASA) within 22 days, while concurrently,

Prophylactic treatment with transdermal deferoxamine mitigates radiation-induced skin fibrosis.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Radiation therapy can result in pathological fibrosis of healthy soft tissue. The iron chelator deferoxamine (DFO) has been shown to improve skin vascularization when injected into radiated tissue prior to fat grafting. Here, we evaluated whether topical DFO administration using a transdermal drug delivery system prior to and immediately following irradiation (IR) can mitigate the chronic effects of radiation damage to the skin. CD-1 nude immunodeficient mice were split into four experimental groups: (1) IR alone (IR only), (2) DFO treatment for two weeks after recovery from IR (DFO post-IR),

Idiopathic mast cell activation syndrome and radiation therapy: a case study, literature review, and discussion of mast cell disorders and radiotherapy.

BACKGROUND: Mast Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS) is classified as an idiopathic mast cell disorder where inconsistent or unknown triggers release inflammatory mediators and cause a constellation of symptoms. Studies demonstrate mast cells increase histamine, tryptase, and inflammatory cytokine expression following ionizing radiation. Additionally, there are cases of cutaneous mastocytosis developing within the initial radiation field suggesting mast cells play a role in local tissue reactions. Literature is sparse on radiation induced toxicity in patients with mast cell disorders. CASE PRESEN

Docetaxel-induced radiation recall dermatitis with atypical features: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Radiation recall dermatitis (RRD) associated with actinomycin D was first described by in 1959, followed by the reporting of several RRD-inducing drugs. In 1994, a study demonstrated docetaxel-induced RRD for the first time; however, despite some case studies reporting RRD, a little has been reported on it since then. Here we present a rare case of atypical docetaxel-induced RRD. CASE PRESENTATION: The patient in his 60s was administered radiotherapy for high-risk prostate cancer. He continued receiving hormonal therapy for 2 years because of being in a high-risk group and becam

A prospective picture collection study for a grading atlas of radiation dermatitis for clinical trials in head-and-neck cancer patients.

Radiation dermatitis is one of the most common acute toxicities of both radiotherapy and chemoradiotherapy. Many clinical trials have evaluated the level of toxicity using the Common Terminology Criteria for Adverse Events ver. 4.03. This criterion accounts for severity in a single sentence only, and no visual classification guide has been available. Thus, there is a risk of subjective interpretation by the individual investigator. This contrasts with the situation with hematologic toxicities, which can be interpreted objectively. The aim of this prospective picture collection study was to dev

Radiotherapy-induced skin reactions: assessment and management.

Patients undergoing radiotherapy often experience a skin reaction to their treatment. In an attempt to assist clinicians in the recognition and care of these radiotherapy-induced skin reactions, an assessment and management tool has been designed for use. This patient-focused assessment tool has been distributed across the counties that the authors' trust serves. It has standardised the care of patients with these skin reactions, so that the patients can be treated with the same interventions whether they visit their GP, hospital or district nurse.

Acute skin toxicity associated with a 1-week schedule of whole breast radiotherapy compared with a standard 3-week regimen delivered in the UK FAST-Forward Trial.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: FAST-Forward is a phase 3 clinical trial testing a 1-week course of whole breast radiotherapy against the UK standard 3-week regimen after primary surgery for early breast cancer. Two acute skin toxicity substudies were undertaken to test the safety of the test schedules with respect to early skin reactions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Patients were randomly allocated to 40Gy/15 fractions (F)/3-weeks, 27Gy/5F/1-week or 26Gy/5F/1-week. Acute breast skin reactions were graded using RTOG (first substudy) and CTCAE criteria v4.03 (second substudy) weekly during treatment and for

Radiation Recall Dermatitis Secondary to Dactinomycin.

Radiation recall dermatitis (RRD) is an uncommon reaction typically triggered by the use of chemotherapeutic agents in the months after treatment with radiation therapy. It usually presents as dermatitis in the irradiated field with prominent intertriginous involvement, and because internal involvement occurs in up to one-third of cases, early recognition is important. RRD has rarely been reported in the pediatric literature. We report the case of a 15-month-old boy with RRD to dactinomycin.

[Mid-dermal elastolysis].

Mid-dermal elastolysis is a rare dermatosis of still unknown etiology with a characteristic mid-dermal loss of elastic tissue on histopatholoy. Papular and plaque-like wrinkling of the skin as well as inflammatory and non-inflammatory variants have been described. We present a 39-year-old patient with extended skin wrinkling of the trunk and upper extremities after extensive UV light exposure and describe the clinical and histopathological findings. Based on our case, differential diagnoses are discussed and the literature is reviewed.

Fluoroscopy-induced chronic radiation skin injury: a disease perhaps often overlooked.

BACKGROUND: Fluoroscopy-induced chronic radiation dermatitis (FICRD) resulting from prolonged exposure to ionizing radiation during interventional procedures has been documented in the radiology and cardiology literature. However, the phenomenon has been rarely reported in the dermatologic literature. Since patients with FICRD often see a dermatologist or a primary care physician to treat their injuries, the diagnosis of FICRD is perhaps often overlooked. OBSERVATIONS: A 62-year-old man with type 2 diabetes mellitus and severe coronary artery disease was seen with a 2-year history of a prurit

Radiation keratosis associated with exposure to a gold ring.

A radiation keratosis occurred in a woman who wore a radioactive gold ring forty-three years ago. Clinicians should be aware that not all "warty lesions" on the hands are actinic keratosis, seborrheic keratosis, or warts. Radioactive gold rings still exist. Diagnosis requires a high index of suspicion, since patients may no longer be wearing the offending ring.
