Radiation Overuse in Intensive Care Units.

Radiological imaging is essential for acute patient management in Intensive Care Units (ICUs); however, it introduces the risk of exposure to ionizing radiation. This review synthesizes research on radiation exposure in ICU settings, highlighting its rise during the COVID-19 pandemic and the rise in repetitive imaging. Our analysis extends to radiation safety thresholds, revealing that some ICU patients exceed the diagnostic reference level, emphasizing the need to balance diagnostic utility against potential long-term risks, such as cancer. Prospective studies have demonstrated an increase in

The Role of Imaging in Health Screening: Overview, Rationale of Screening, and Screening Economics.

Imaging screening examinations are growing in their indications and volume to identify conditions at an early, treatable stage. The Radiology Research Alliance's 'Role of Imaging in Health Screening' Task Force provides a review of imaging-based screening rationale, economics, and describes established guidelines by various organizations. Various imaging modalities can be employed in screening, and are often chosen based on the specific pathology and patient characteristics. Prevalent disease processes with identifiable progression patterns that benefit from early potentially curative interven

Fragmentation of extracellular DNA by long-term exposure to radiation from uranium in aquatic environments.

Persistent harmful scenarios associated with disposal of radioactive waste, high-background radiation areas and severe nuclear accidents are of great concern regarding consequences to both human health and the environment. Of particular concern is the extracellular DNA in aquatic environments contaminated by radiological substances. Strand breaks induced by radiation promote decrease in the transformation efficiency for extracellular DNA. The focus of this study is the quantification of DNA damage following long-term exposure (over one year) to low doses of natural uranium (an alpha particle e

Accuracy of admitting diagnosis in acute surgical patients by non consultant hospital doctors.

The incidence of accurate diagnosis made by non-consultant hospital doctors (NCHDs) is unknown in acute surgical admissions. There is a common assumption that reliance is made on excessive and inappropriate investigations. The aim of study was to assess the accuracy of admitting diagnosis by the NCHDs and the appropriateness of radiological investigations ordered. Data were collected on 100 consecutive acute surgical admissions. A final diagnosis was made in all the patients. 79 patients had accurate initial diagnosis (NCHDs). 23 scans were performed which confirmed the initial diagnosis. Out

Impact of the introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccination on invasive pneumococcal disease and pneumonia in The Gambia: 10 years of population-based surveillance.

BACKGROUND: The Gambia introduced seven-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV7) in August 2009, followed by PCV13 in May, 2011, using a schedule of three primary doses without a booster dose or catch-up immunisation. We aimed to assess the long-term impact of PCV on disease incidence. METHODS: We did 10 years of population-based surveillance for invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) and WHO defined radiological pneumonia with consolidation in rural Gambia. The surveillance population included all Basse Health and Demographic Surveillance System residents aged 2 months or older. Nurses scre

Artificial intelligence and personalised medicine in liver cancer.

Primary liver cancers, including hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma, represent a growing global health burden marked by rising incidence and high mortality. Clinical management requires integration of tumour stage, liver function, and patient-related factors to guide treatment decisions, yet current frameworks capture only a fraction of underlying disease complexity. In this setting, artificial intelligence (AI) is emerging as a key enabler of precision medicine in liver oncology. AI encompasses machine learning and deep learning approaches capable of identifying complex, non-line

Vaping-Related Acute Parenchymal Lung Injury: A Systematic Review.

The outbreak of vaping-related acute lung injury in the United States, named EVALI (e-cigarette or vaping product use associated acute lung injury), has reignited concerns about the health effects of vaping. Initial case reports of vaping-related lung injury date back to 2012, but the ongoing outbreak of EVALI began in the summer of 2019 and has been implicated in 2,807 cases and 68 deaths as of this writing. Review of the scientific literature revealed 216 patient cases that spanned 41 reports of parenchymal lung injury attributed to vaping. In this review, we detail the clinical, radiographi

Age at presentation and management of pediatric intussusception: A Pediatric Health Information System database study.

BACKGROUND: Intussusception is uncommon in children older than 3 years, and use of enema reduction in older children is controversial. We sought to determine whether older children are at greater risk of requiring operative intervention and/or having pathology causing lead points, such that enema reduction should not be attempted. METHODS: The Pediatric Health Information System database was reviewed from January 1, 2009-June 30, 2014. Patients were followed for 6 months from initial presentation or until bowel resection occurred. Successful enema reduction was defined as having radiologic re

Get the Lead off Our Backs!

Many interventionalists face physical challenges almost daily for years or decades. The burden of assuming awkward positions while carrying extra weight can take its toll on the musculoskeletal system to such an extent that the career is ended or modified to exclude procedural aspects. The proliferation of lighter aprons has unfortunately resulted in reduced protection with poor correlation of protection to labeling due to the inadequacies of testing methods for nonlead materials. The protective quality of the non-leads is not superior to lead-containing composites on a weight basis, and the u
