In a series of 542 conservatively-treated fractures of the distal radius 30 patients (5,5%) developed compression neuropathy: of the median nerve (n = 23), of the ulnar nerve (n = 5), and of the radial nerve (n = 2). Three patients required decompression of the carpal tunnel, and one patient's ulnar symptoms were relieved after shortening osteotomy of the ulna. The remaining neuropathies resolved spontaneously over a period of three months. Five patients developed typical reflex sympathetic dystrophy with diffuse pain, loss of hand function, and significant autonomic dysfunction. None of them

The long-term results of the conservative treatment of wrist fractures were observed in a follow-up study of 297 cases over a period of one and one-half years to six years. The evaluation of the results was based on clinical parameters, both subjective and objective, as well as radiological features. The results were: excellent in 38% of cases, good in 49%, fair in 11.5%, and poor in 1.5%; considerably worse were the subjective results (20% fair to poor). No statistically significant relation could be found between results and type of fracture. Clinical deformities and pain in the area of the

In the treatment of unstable comminuted and intra-articular fractures of the lower end of the radius, we have found that is is essential to reconstitute the normal anatomical relationship of the radius to the carpus and to the ulna. This is possible by performing an open reduction and by maintaining the fractured fragments by Kirschner wires and adding a tension band. Patients treated thus are reported. There have been no complications and the patients regained full function of the wrist without unsightly deformity.

Corrective osteotomy is indicated in young manual workers with significant malalignment after fracture of the distal radius without associated degenerative changes in the wrist joint. Chronic pain, limited motion and impaired power can be avoided and the cosmetic appearance of the hand improved, by restoration of the functional anatomy of the wrist. The operation consists of an opening-wedge osteotomy at the fracture site, sometimes combined with resection of the distal ulna. The approach may be dorsal or volar. A small iliac cortico-cancellous bone graft is inserted at the osteotomy site. Fix

PURPOSE: Pediatric proximal radius fractures frequently lead to complications and unsatisfactory results, yet the medium- to long-term outcomes of these injuries remain insufficiently studied.
METHODS: We treated 140 proximal radius fractures in 138 children (median age 10, range 1-16 years) between 2014 and 2019. Fracture characteristics, treatment, complications, patient-reported, and functional outcomes were assessed at a median follow-up of 6.8 years (range 5-10 years) through clinical assessment or telephone interview in 110 patients (80%).
RESULTS: Less severe fractures (Judet types I-…

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study was to determine whether associated nonunion of ulnar styloid fracture following plate-and-screw fixation of a distal radius fracture (DRF) has any effect on wrist functional outcomes, ulnar-sided wrist pain or distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) instability.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 91 consecutive patients with a DRF and an accompanying ulnar styloid fracture treated by open reduction and volar locking plate fixation were included in this study. In the first part of the analysis, the 91 study subjects were subdivided according to the presence or no

PURPOSE: Ulnar styloid fractures commonly occur with distal radius fractures (DRFs). Ulnar styloid fractures that involve the insertion of the radioulnar ligaments can cause distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ) instability, and the literature suggests that these fractures should be treated with open reduction internal fixation (ORIF). However, in the absence of DRUJ instability, the effects of ulnar styloid fractures are unknown. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the outcome of ulnar styloid fractures without DRUJ instability on patient-rated outcomes after DRF ORIF.
METHODS: Between 2003 an…

Distal radius fractures are very common injuries. Majority of these fractures are transverse or oblique in nature. Isolated vertical fractures of the distal radius in the sagittal plane are rare injuries. The management of these vertical fractures is therefore different from the usual transverse or oblique fractures of the distal radius. We report on a 53-year-old right-handed gentleman who fell from his bicycle and sustained a vertical fracture of the distal radius. His distal radius fracture was fixed surgically using two interfragmentary screws. A direct lateral approach of the distal radiu…

INTRODUCTION: median nerve neuropathy accompanying a distal radius fracture is common. Differential diagnosis includes nerve contusion, acute carpal tunnel syndrome, forearm compartment syndrome or exacerbation of an idiopathic carpal tunnel syndrome.
CASE REPORT: a 44-year-old male presented with a right distal radius fracture after a motorcycle accident. He presented a 1.3 cm blunt wound situated proximal to the radiocarpal flexion crease and complained of well-defined numbness in the median nerve territory. The fracture was reduced and fixed using a volar plate and the median nerve was exp

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are common fracture types and elderly patients often struggle to achieve functional recovery, which could be overcome by precise rehabilitation. This study aims to develop an innovative approach for acquiring patient-specific musculoskeletal models to provide guidelines for therapists to tailor rehabilitation plans individually.
METHOD: A wearable EMG detector (Myo armband) and a dynamometer (KDG grip strength tester, EH101) were used to collect EMG signals and grip forces from 20 volunteers at 0, 30, 50, 70, and 100 N, which were considered low-leve…

AIM: The aim of this study was to assess whether some patients had clear distalradioulnar joint (DRUJ) subluxation at radiological follow-up following an extra-articular distal radius fracture testing the null hypothesis that there would be no cases of ulnar head subluxation.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed wrist radiographs of 192 consecutive, extra-articular (metaphyseal) distal radius fractures in 190 adults (13 men and 179 women) who presented to our hospital. We looked at the fracture patterns based upon the direction of the fractures on the postero-anterior (PA) and lateral radiograp…

BACKGROUND: Disparities in social determinants of health (SDH) have been shown to play an increasingly important role in the equitable delivery of health care. Distal radius fractures (DRFs) are among the most common upper-extremity injuries encountered. This study aims to examine the influence of economic, educational, social, environmental, and healthcare disparities on management of these injuries.
METHODS: PearlDiver Mariner insurance claims database was analyzed for treatment patterns of DRF in patients aged 18 to 65 years based on the presence or absence of social determinants of health…

BACKGROUND: Distal radius fractures are extremely common. Patients routinely undergo early imaging (around 2 weeks) after open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of distal radius fractures despite no clinical concerns. We analyzed the need for these radiographs by evaluating when imaging identifies complications after surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: All distal radius fractures treated with ORIF via a volar approach by the senior surgeon were included. Intraoperative and postoperative images were analyzed for maintenance of reduction and complications. Demographic data, fracture characteri…

Fractures of the distal radius are a common fracture with an increasing incidence. However, the underlying factors for distal radius fractures (DRFs) remain unclear. A total of 123 patients with distal radial fractures were recruited. To document clinical and follow-up data, and measure the levels of white blood cells, hemoglobin, platelets, and red blood cells in the bloodstream for qualitative observation of their expression effects within the human body, specifically assessing whether the magnitudes of these indicators are associated with potential factors influencing DRF. Pearson chi-squar…

The distal radius fracture is a common fracture with a prevalence of 17% on the emergency departments. The conservative treatment of distal radius fractures usually consists of three to six weeks of plaster immobilization. Several studies show that one week of plaster immobilization is safe for non- or minimally displaced distal radius fractures that do not need reduction. A shorter period of immobilization may lead to a better functional outcome, faster reintegration and participation in daily activities. Due to upcoming innovations such as three-dimensional printed splints for distal radius …

A 35-year-old right hand dominant male sustained a high energy closed right distal radius fracture with associated generalized paresthesias. Following closed reduction, the patient was found to have an atypical low ulnar nerve palsy upon outpatient follow-up. After continued symptoms and an equivocal wrist MRI the patient underwent surgical exploration. Intraoperatively, the ulnar nerve as well as the ring and small finger flexor digitorum superficialis tendons were found to be translocated around the ulnar head. The nerve and tendons were reduced, the median nerve was decompressed, and the fr
