To determine if alterations in extraocular muscle morphology occur after subchronic oral administration of pyridostigmine bromide, rats were continuously fed 90 mg/kg in meal and examined at 1, 2, 4, 7, and 15 days. Within the first day, blood acetylcholinesterase activity was reduced by 87% and remained inhibited by 74-91% during the study. A technique is described to expand the subglottis by anterior cricoid split (ACS) combined with external cricoid distraction (ECD) using a posterior belly of digastric muscle sling. This technique was used on 5-week-old rats that were killed 6 weeks after surgery, and the larynges were examined histologically and compared with those of rats who underwent ACS alone. Information was available from ten animals in the ECD group and five in the ACS alone group. Orchiopexy with division of the spermatic artery and veins is a commonly used technique for correcting the high undescended testis, although the longterm results have not been clearly defined. Post-mortem changes in barbiturate concentrations were evidenced using a rat-secobarbital model. The method used for the extraction and HPLC assay of barbiturates is suitable for all biologic fluids and post-mortem tissues. Kinetic data obtained is of excellent quality. Various modelization constants were defined. This experimental work emphasizes the difficulty of post-mortem toxicology, as concentrations found at the time of autopsy may be different from concentrations at the time of death, in blood as well as in tissues.

Five secondary amines and secondary amino acids were reacted with carbon disulfide to yield dithiocarbamates. These compounds were tested for their influence on biochemical parameters and on some biological effects of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA). The following results were found. (i) All dithiocarbamates tested reduced the activity of N-nitrosodiethylamine-deethylase and completely inhibited the N-nitrosodimethylamine-demethylase in the rat liver. Carbonic anhydrase III has been localized using the avidin-biotin-glucose oxidase complex (ABC) method in the submandibular gland of the rat and hamster. This isozyme, which is predominant in skeletal muscle, was observed in intercalated duct, striated duct and excretory duct cells in the rat submandibular glands. Histopathological and ultrastructural changes due to a zinc low diet were investigated in buccal, palatal and tongue mucosa of male 15 weeks rats of Sprague Dawley. Experimental rats were fed with zinc low diet (1.3 ppm Zn) for 16 weeks. After 16 weeks, experimental rats were then kept on zinc-sufficient diet (50 ppm Zn) for 4 weeks during recovery experiment. Results were as follows: 1. Zinc concentrations of serum and submandibular gland were decreased significantly (P less than 0.01) from 2 to 16 weeks respectively. The healing process of acetic acid-induced gastric ulcer in rats was observed with an endoscope for 365 d after ulcer induction. The ulcers were induced by acetic acid solutions of various concentrations (2.5 (I), 5.0 (II), 10 (III) and 20% (IV); 0.05 ml). This experiment investigated the reason for disturbances of tooth eruption through hydroxylapatite (HA) granules. HA granules of compact and porous structure were implanted in the pathway of erupting teeth in 14 five-day-old rats. The results demonstrate that the use of this material can result in tooth retention and malformed tooth crowns. Tooth crown malformation can be traced to the formation of ceramo-dentinous complexes which promote bacterial invasion of the pulp cavity, resulting in arrest of the tooth eruption process.
