Incidence, predictors and health outcomes of delirium in very old hospitalized patients: a prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Delirium is a common complication that leads to poor health outcomes in older patients undergoing treatment. Due to severe consequences, early recognition of high-risk patients and risk factors for delirium are crucial in the prompt initiation of prevention measures. However, research in medically hospitalized patients aged ≥80 years remains limited. This study aimed to determine the incidence, predictors and health outcomes of delirium in very old (aged ≥80 years) hospitalized patients in China. METHODS: A prospective study was conducted in individuals aged ≥80 years admitted to

Hepatic sEH drives stress-induced neuroinflammation via IL-6 and liver-brain axis.

INTRODUCTION: Restraint stress is known to induce damage to vital organs. Previous work indicates that acute restraint stress (ARS) causes significant hepatic injury in mice. Interestingly, while the liver gradually recovered following removal of the stressor, stress-induced behavioral abnormalities persisted for up to 7 days after stress cessation. Soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) plays a key regulatory role in neuroinflammation and mood disorders. However, whether and how hepatic sEH upregulation contributes to ARS-induced neurological damage remains unknown. METHODS: In a mouse model of ARS

An Open-Source Restraint System for Magnetic Resonance Imaging in Awake Rats.

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a critical tool for translational neuroscience, but preclinical studies frequently rely on anesthesia, which alters neural activity and limits comparison with human studies. Awake rodent functional MRI (fMRI) enables investigation of brain function under physiologically relevant conditions; however, its implementation is constrained by the need for anesthesia during restraint setup. We developed and evaluated a restraint system and habituation protocol for awake rat fMRI. Ten rats were studied: an awake group and an anesthetized group (three males and two fe

Serotonin receptor 4 in the ventral CA3 regulates agomelatine-induced anxiolytic-like behaviors.

Agomelatine, an atypical antidepressant, offers combined effects of sleep regulation, antidepressant action, and anxiolysis, making it particularly suitable for patients with insomnia and mood disorders. In this study, we investigated the mechanisms underlying the anxiolytic effects of agomelatine in mice. Mice were subjected to chronic restraint stress (CRS) for 14 consecutive days. The mice were treated with agomelatine (10 mg·kg-1·d-1, i.p.) for 30 days. Afterward, anxiety-related behavioral tests (OFT, EPM, TST, and FST) or c-Fos immunohistochemical analysis were conducted. The results fro

ISRIB inhibits endoplasmic reticulum stress to ameliorate chronic restraint stress-induced intestinal inflammation.

Prolonged psychological stress can cause intestinal barrier dysfunction, increasing its permeability and allowing harmful substances present in the gut, such as bacteria and toxins, to readily traverse the intestinal barrier and enter the bloodstream, ultimately precipitating systemic inflammation. This study used the chronic restraint stress (CRS) model to stimulate intestinal inflammation induced by prolonged psychological stress in humans. Endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress is closely linked to intestinal diseases. Unresolved and persistent ER stress can damage the intestinal barrier, activa

Sex-specific Effects of Acute Stress on Emergence from Isoflurane Anesthesia via Brainstem Circuitry in Mice.

BACKGROUND: Preoperative stress is a well documented phenomenon in surgical patients and leads to clinically significant variability in anesthetic requirements. This variability poses important challenges for safe anesthesia practice, as stress may alter the function of neural circuits targeted by general anesthetics. However, the specific mechanisms linking stress to changes in anesthetic efficacy remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate how acute stress affects the efficacy of isoflurane anesthesia and to uncover the associated neural circuitry and receptor mechanisms. METHODS: Using

Neuroprotective Role of Selenium Nanoparticles Against Behavioral, Neurobiochemical and Histological Alterations in Rats Subjected to Chronic Restraint Stress.

Chronic stress induces changes in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) showed promising results in several neurological animal models. The implementation of SeNPs in chronic restraint stress (CRS) remains to be elucidated. This study was done to determine the possible protective effects of selenium nanoparticles on behavioral changes and brain oxidative stress markers in a rat model of CRS. 50 rats were divided into three groups; control group (n = 10), untreated CRS group (n = 10) and CRS-SeNPs treated group (n = 30). Restraint stress was performed 6 h./day fo

Dynamics of somatostatin 4 receptor expression during chronic-stress loading and its potential as a chronic-stress marker.

Chronic stress has been implicated in mental illnesses and depressive behaviors. Somatostatin 4 receptor (SSTR4) has been shown to mediate anxiolytic and depression-like effects. Here, we aimed to explore the potential of SSTR4 as a diagnostic marker for chronic stress in mice. The mice were divided into single stress, chronic restraint stress, and control groups, and Sstr4 mRNA expression in the pituitary, lungs, and thymus, its protein expression in the thymus, were analyzed. Compared to controls, Sstr4 mRNA expression decreased significantly in the pituitary gland of the chronic and single-

Silent information regulator 1 mediates H 2 S-inhibited chronic restraint stress-induced depressive-like behaviors by regulating hippocampal autophagy.

OBJECTIVES: Our previous study has demonstrated that hydrogen sulfide (H 2 S), a novel gasotransmitter, attenuates excessive autophagy and depressive-like behaviors in chronic restraint stress (CRS)-exposed rats, but the underlying molecular mechanism remains to be elucidated. Silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1), a deacetylase at the consumption of NAD+ plays an important regulatory role in depression. Hence, this study aimed to investigate whether SIRT1 mediates the protective effect of H 2 S on CRS-induced depressive-like behaviors by regulating hippocampal autophagy. METHODS: Adult male

Capture, immobilization, and Global Positioning System collaring of olive baboons (Papio anubis) and vervets (Chlorocebus pygerythrus): Lessons learned and suggested best practices.

As the value of Global Positioning System (GPS) technology in addressing primatological questions becomes more obvious, more studies will include capturing and collaring primates, with concomitant increased risk of adverse consequences to primate subjects. Here we detail our experiences in capturing, immobilizing, and placing GPS collars on six olive baboons (Papio anubis) in four groups and 12 vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) in five groups in Kenya. We captured baboons with cage traps and vervets with box traps, immobilized them, and attached GPS collars that were to be worn for 1 ye

[Recognising positional asphyxia: not always the cause of death in victims in an unusual position].

Deceased individuals may be found in a position that raises the question of whether or not the individual died from being in that position. We describe 3 victims of 35, 84 and 54 years of age, respectively. All were found in an unusual position that may have impeded breathing. Breathing may be impaired by compression of the thoracic wall or by extrathoracic airway obstruction caused by the position. Reduced independence, with causes varying from dementia to inebriation, is a risk factor for positional asphyxia. Restraining a person in the so-called "hogtie position" does not lead to positional

Chronic stress-induced mechanical hyperalgesia is controlled by capsaicin-sensitive neurones in the mouse.

BACKGROUND: Clinical studies demonstrated peripheral nociceptor deficit in stress-related chronic pain states, such as fibromyalgia. The interactions of stress and nociceptive systems have special relevance in chronic pain, but the underlying mechanisms including the role of specific nociceptor populations remain unknown. We investigated the role of capsaicin-sensitive neurones in chronic stress-related nociceptive changes. METHOD: Capsaicin-sensitive neurones were desensitized by the capsaicin analogue resiniferatoxin (RTX) in CD1 mice. The effects of desensitization on chronic restraint str

Minimally invasive highly precise monitoring of respiratory rhythm in the mouse using an epithelial temperature probe.

BACKGROUND: Respiration is one of the essential rhythms of life. The precise measurement of respiratory behavior is of great importance in studies addressing olfactory sensory processing or the coordination of orofacial movements with respiration. An ideal method of measurement should reliably capture the distinct phases of respiration without interfering with behavior. NEW METHOD: This new method involves chronic implantation of a thermistor probe in a previously undescribed hollow space located above the anterior portion of the nasal cavity without penetrating any soft epithelial tissues.

Dose-dependent effects of the antiprogestin, RU486, on sexual behavior of naturally cycling Fischer rats.

Regularly cycling Fischer female rats were treated with either a low (5mg/kg) or high (5mg/RAT; approximately 30mg/kg) dose of the antiprogestin, RU486, before the morning of proestrus or on the morning of proestrus. The emergence of sexual behavior after treatment with RU486 was examined in a mating test with a sexually active male rat. Lordosis behavior was remarkably resistant to the effects of RU486. Only the high dose of RU486 given the evening before proestrus, approximately 22h before mating, reduced lordosis behavior. Independent of dose or time of treatment, proceptivity was reduced a

Head restraint backset during routine automobile driving: drivers usually exceed the recommended guidelines.

OBJECTIVE: Although several previous studies have evaluated horizontal head restraint backset distances, few studies have evaluated them during driving. The purpose of this study was to measure this backset during routine automobile driving and to specifically evaluate the backset during individual driving tasks such as turning, stopping, starting, and lane changes. METHODS: Fourteen subjects drove around a specified route through the city of Guelph, Ontario, Canada, that included residential, thruway, and highway driving; additional minor driving tasks, such as lane changes, were evaluated.

Examination techniques and therapeutic regimens for the ruminant and camelid eye.

A step-wise procedure and necessary equipment for examination of the ruminant and camelid eye are detailed. Restraint techniques and usage of local anesthetics to facilitate examination are described. Common examination findings and their significance are discussed. Finally, therapeutic options for keratoconjunctivitis and uveitis are explored. A complete ocular examination of ruminants is often not performed in the field because of lack of time, lack of appropriate facilities, and/or lack of equipment. Although individual ophthalmic examinations are not frequently performed as part of a herd

Clinical practice guideline: 1-hour face-to-face assessment of a patient in a mechanical restraint.

Face-to-face assessment within 1 hour after placing a patient in a restraint has been the standard of care following regulatory requirements set forth by the federal government in 1999. This rule, although widely followed and applauded as optimum patient care, has little evidence of a standardized format for what constitutes the examination. Health care providers agree that a face-to-face assessment is warranted; however, no set parameters exist for what constitutes the key elements of such an assessment. This clinical practice guideline offers a specific outline to follow that emphasizes the

Salvage of a free flap by cephalic suspension with Tessier's diadem.

The authors present a case of a patient with a large occipital meningioma, treated by embolisation and surgery, in which skin necrosis occurred overlying the craniotomy bone flap. A free Latissimus dorsi flap was used to cover the tissue loss but poor healing and flap condition occurred due to contact with the anti-sore bed system making it impossible to maintain the patient on dorsal position. A cephalic suspension was carried out by Tessier's diadem making it possible to salvage the flap and to treat the patient.
