The aim of this study is to report the coexistence of retinal arterial macroaneurysms (RAMs) and cerebral aneurysms (CAs) in a 58-year-old woman with hypertension. She was noted as having a 1-week history of vision loss in her left eye, along with a 2-month history of a nonspecific headache. Visual acuity was 20/32 in her left eye and 20/20 in her right eye. A fundus examination revealed multiple areas of retinal hemorrhages that were surrounded by circinate exudation in her left eye, as well as the generalized attenuation of the retinal arteries in both of her eyes. Angiographically, hyperflu

OBJECTIVE: To assess the relation between ocular perfusion pressure and blood flow velocity in the central retinal artery in patients with acral vasospasm.
SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Eighteen otherwise healthy subjects with acral vascular dysregulation, as demonstrated by nail-fold capillaroscopy, and 18 age- and sex-matched healthy volunteers without vasospasm were recruited. After subjects had rested for 20 minutes in a supine position, intraocular pressure and blood flow velocity in the central retinal artery were determined by applanation tonometry and color Doppler imaging, respectively. The …

Cilioretinal artery occlusion (CLRAO) may be occasionally associated with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). This combined retinal vascular pathology is described in 5 patients. In this clinical setting the vulnerability of cilioretinal vessels can be explained by the difference in regulatory mechanisms between choroidal and retinal blood flow. The type of CRVO may predict whether the CLRAO is primary or secondary to the CRVO.

Two cases of foreign body embolism of the retinal arteries after percutaneous carotid angiography were encountered within a period of 7 months. Both patients were non-arteriosclerotic. Loss of visual function in direct relation to carotid angiography and the observation of a dark foreign body in a retinal arteriole indicated exogenous embolism. No or only slight remission occurred. Careful ophthalmoscopy in cases of visual complaints after carotid angiography is advised, and if foreign body embolism is suspected, treatment with vasodilators (e. g. amyl nitrite) should be given a trial.

Histological examinations of the intracerebral and retinal arteries were preformed in patients who had cerebrovascular disease and in those … not reflect the changes of the intracerebral arteries. Our results suggest that patients with these retinal artery changes in the region near the optic disk if moderate to severe have an increased risk of having or incurring cerebral hemorrhage and infarction, but the arterial changes in the ora serrata do not always indicate risk of cerebral hemorrhage and infa …

The most common complication of coil embolization for cerebral aneurysms is thrombo-embolic stroke; in rare cases, these strokes, can present with central retinal artery occlusion. At our institution, a 53-year-old woman underwent stent-assisted coiling of the aneurysm. The patient's vision was improved immediately after intra-arterial thrombolysis and had further improved 8 months later. This report describes our experience of a rare case of central retinal artery occlusion after coil embolization that was successfully treated by intra-arterial thrombolysis.

We describe two cases of branch retinal artery occlusion (BRAO) after carotid artery (CA) stenting. Case 1: A 57-year-old man diagnosed with left neovascular glaucoma was admitted to our department for trabeculectomy (He had complained of decreased visual acuity (VA) in the left eye for a month). A preoperative neck angio CT scan showed bilateral CA stenosis. After CA stenting, he contracted visual defects on the right superior area of his right eye. Upon examination, VA with correction was found to be 1.0 (OD), but right fundoscopy revealed ischemic retina whitening along the inferior tempora…

PURPOSE: This study aims to investigate the effects of varying lengths of cilioretinal artery perfusion on central visual acuity and fundus angiography circulation time in patients with central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO).
METHODS: A retrospective analysis included 582 CRAO patients, including 87 patients with cilioretinal arteries. Cilioretinal arteries were classified by direction into nasal and temporal groups, with the temporal group further subdivided into four subtypes based on the optic disc-macula distance (DMD): 1/4, 2/4, 3/4, and 4/4 DMD. Differences in basic information, visual…

PURPOSE: This case report describes the delayed, uncommon ophthalmic presentations of monocular choroidal ischemia (Amalric triangular sign), ischemic optic neuropathy, central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO), and extraocular motility restriction caused by traumatic internal carotid artery dissection (ICAD) in a young individual.
OBSERVATIONS: A 29-year-old man presented with sudden vision loss in his left eye which had started 7 h earlier. His medical history included a motorcycle accident six months prior, where he struck his chin on the ground and lost consciousness. At that time, he had c…

Purpose: Recent reports suggest retinal microvasculature mirror cerebral microcirculation. Using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA), we investigated the retinal microvasculature differences between ischemic stroke patients with large artery atherosclerosis (LAA) and small artery disease (SAD). Methods: All patients underwent MR imaging and were classified as SAD and LAA; LAA was subdivided into anterior LAS and posterior LAS depending on the location. Swept-source OCTA (SS-OCTA) was used to image and segment the retina into the superficial vascular complex (SVC) and deep vascular

Here we report the case of a 78-year-old male patient with a 2-day history of low visual acuity and fundus and who was diagnosed with central retinal artery occlusion. In addition, the patient had an allergy to fluorescein. A fundus examination of the left eye found a pink optic disc with blurred margins, diffuse pallor in the retina with arterial attenuation, and a normal band of the retinal area in the macular region. Optical coherence tomography revealed increased thickness of the inner retina. Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) revealed a decreased flow signal in the superfic…

CASE REPORT: A 72 year-old woman referred for cataract surgery in her right eye. Biomicroscopy revealed a retrocapsular fibrotic tissue in communication with the optic nerve, suggesting a persistent hyaloid artery (PAH). A posterior capsule rupture unexpectedly occurred during lens hydrodissection. One day after surgery, fundus examination showed a combined central retinal artery and vein occlusion.
CONCLUSION: PAH is uncommon, but its presence may alert us of this possible complication during cataract surgery.

INTRODUCTION: To determine the effect of the timing of hyperbaric oxygen (HBO₂) treatment on functional and structural outcomes in central retinal artery occlusion (CRAO).
METHODS: This single‑center retrospective cohort study analyzed 101 eyes with CRAO treated with HBO₂. Eyes were stratified by symptom‑to‑treatment interval: ≤12 hours (Group 1), 12-24 hours (Group 2), 24-36 hours (Group 3), and >36 hours (Group 4). Best‑corrected visual acuity (BCVA-logMAR), central macular thickness (CMT), and inner retinal hyperreflective band thickness (IRHBT) were recorded at presentation, week 1, and m…

This report demonstrates the diagnostic evaluation and clinical management of a 16-year-old girl who developed branch retinal artery occlusion secondary to patent foramen ovale. The goal is to increase awareness of this rare presentation in adolescents among clinicians, with a summary of the important clinical features, multimodal imaging findings and therapeutic strategies that allowed for timely reperfusion and subsequent visual recovery.
