[Radiographic anomalies and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome].

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to identify the particular cranio-facial pattern observed in patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and to search for possible correlations between morphological anomalies and disease severity. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study group included 49 dentate patients, mean age 47.7 years suffering from obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Most of the patients were overweight. RESULTS: Typical features observed in these patients were a short craniospinal field, a retro-maxillary, a retro-mandibula, antero-inferior vertical excess of the face, and class

The MAS (mandibular advancement series) difference.

So now it may be seen what is meant by the term "The MAS Difference". The American orthodontic specialty has for the most part been slow, or even in isolated pockets, willfully resistant to expansion of orthodontic technique up out of the "Procrustean bed" of fixed appliance limitations to the panorama of attacking the teeth-bone-muscle triangle of malocclusion with separate techniques and appliance systems designed specifically for each. What makes this anathema to those of a broader view is that it is only with those expanded, combined fixed AND functional techniques, that one has any chance

New insights into the genetics of mandibular retrognathism: novel candidate genes.

PURPOSE: Mandibular retrognathism (MR) is a common skeletal malocclusion in humans with a strong genetic component. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in genes encoding epidermal growth factor (EGF) and EGF receptor (EGFR) could be involved in the etiology of mandibular retrognathism. Therefore, in this study, we investigated whether SNPs in the genes encoding for EGF and EGFR are associated with MR in German teenagers. METHODS: This nested case-control study evaluated German orthodontic patients, aged 10-18 years. DNA, which was isolated from buccal epithelial cells using two cytobrushes

Treatment effects of two different appliances on pharyngeal airway space in mixed dentition Malay children.

BACKGROUND: Treatment of Class III malocclusion is related to redirecting the growth of mandible, which may have an impact on the pharyngeal airway. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate and compare the treatment effect of Reverse Twin-Block (RTB) and Reverse Pull Face Mask (RPFM) on Pharyngeal Airway Space (PAS) in early and late mixed dentition Class III samples. METHODS: Ninety-five mixed dentition Malay children with Class III malocclusion were included in this study. Data consists of 190 pre- and post-treatment lateral cephalograms of early (8-9 years) and late (10-11 years) mixed dentition Class III

[MRI analysis of the effect on mandibular retrusion with anterior disc displacement treated by using Herbst appliance].

Objective: To investgate the effect of Herbst appliance on the growth and remodeling of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in class Ⅱ patients with mandibular retrusion by using MRI. Methods: Between December 2010 and October 2014, 12 class Ⅱ patients (11-16 years old) with mandibular retrusion were chosen. The patients were divided into two groups. The control group included 7 patients (14 joints) with normal disc condyle relationship and the anterior disc displacement (ADD) group included 5 patients (10 joints) with anterior disc displacement. The MRI images of TMJ were measured, including co

Distalization controlled with the use of lip-bumper and mini-screw as anchorage: a new approach.

An increasingly number of patients with Angle Class II has been seeking orthodontic clinics to have their malocclusion treated. Herein, it is presented a new method of promote distal movements in maxillary molars with a combination of limp-bumper (LB) and mini screw. This technique was proven to be fast, practical and with low-cost, thus favoring both the professional and the patient.

Rapid maxillary expansion in children with Obstructive Sleep Apnoea Syndrome (OSAS).

AIM: to evaluate the effects of rapid maxillary expansion (RME) in a group of OSAS preschool children. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Lateral cephalograms of 15 OSAS children (8 boys and 7 girls, age mean ± SD: 5.94 ± 1.64 years) were analysed at the start of treatment with RME (T0). All subjects were revaluated after a mean period of 1.57 ± 0.58 years (T1). At this time the sample was divided into 2 groups according to the change in the respiratory disturbance index (RDI): an improved group (I: 8 subjects) and a stationary/worsened group (SW: 7 subjects). Differences between I and SW children with r

Effect of maxillary anteroposterior position on profile esthetics in headgear-treated patients.

INTRODUCTION: Headgears have been used to treat Class II malocclusions for over a century. The purpose of this retrospective study was to investigate the profile esthetic changes resulting from headgear use in growing Class II patients with protrusive, normal, and retrusive maxillae. METHODS: Profile silhouettes were created from pretreatment and posttreatment lateral cephalometric tracings of growing Class II patients treated with headgear followed by conventional fixed appliances. Ten patients had an initially protrusive maxilla (FH:NA, >92°), 10 had an initially normally positioned maxilla

Clinical application of curvilinear distraction osteogenesis for correction of mandibular deformities.

PURPOSE: To report the use of a semiburied curvilinear distraction device, with a 3-dimensional (3D) computed tomography treatment planning system, for correction of mandibular deformities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective evaluation of 13 consecutive patients, with syndromic and nonsyndromic micrognathia, who underwent correction by curvilinear distraction osteogenesis. A 3D computed tomography scan was obtained for each patient and imported into a 3D treatment planning system (Slicer/Osteoplan). Surgical guides were constructed to localize the osteotomy and to drill holes to

Evaluation of upper lip hypoesthesia with a trigeminal somatosensory-evoked potential following Le Fort I osteotomy in combination with mandibular osteotomy.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to objectively evaluate hypoesthesia of the upper lip following Le Fort I osteotomy in combination with mandibular osteotomy with trigeminal somatosensory evoked potential (TSEP). SUBJECTS AND METHODS: The subjects consisted of 25 patients with mandibular prognathism with maxillary retrognathism mandibular prognathism with or without asymmetry, who underwent Le Fort I osteotomy in combination with sagittal split ramus osteotomy (SSRO) or intraoral vertical ramus osteotomy (IVRO). Trigeminal nerve hypoesthesia at the region of the upper lip was assessed b

Impact of nasal airway obstruction on dentofacial development and sleep disturbances in children: preliminary notes.

Respiratory disorders in the upper respiratory tract during sleep are most often part of a continuous pathological process of long standing. Schematically, three clinical syndromes with increasing severity are described: breathing with the mouth open, snoring and sleep apneal hypopnea syndrome. Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) is a subtle, but severe sleep disorder of early childhood. It is often difficult to detect and may have long-term consequences, including failure to thrive, behavioral disturbances, developmental delay, and cor pulmonale. These conditions always include a function

Intraoral mandibular distraction osteogenesis in facial asymmetry patients with unilateral temporomandibular joint bony ankylosis.

Gap arthroplasty and costochondral rib bone graft are commonly performed by oral and maxillofacial surgeons to reconstruct the temporomandibular joint with ankylosis. However, unpredictable and unsatisfactory results such as re-ankylosis, growth disturbance, and facial asymmetry often occur. Even if the costochondral graft is successful, donor-site morbidity is inevitable. More recently, surgeons have become interested in distraction osteogenesis as a means of temporomandibular joint reconstruction. This case series presents the results of intraoral mandibular distraction osteogenesis and gap
