However, surgery in the retroperitoneal space is associated with a risk of injury to major vessels or organs. In conclusion, retroperitoneal chyloma is a rare entity that is best treated by complete excision. For small lesions, a wait-and-watch approach may be advisable.

Retroperitoneal abscesses are rare but serious clinical conditions characterized by delayed diagnosis, insufficient drainage, and high morbidity. They are more common in immunocompromised individuals, such as those with diabetes mellitus. A 60-year-old female with a history of type 2 diabetes mellitus presented with complaints of right flank pain, nausea, and vomiting. Laboratory tests revealed leukocytosis, and abdominal imaging identified a 10 cm abscess in the right retroperitoneal space. Percutaneous drainage was performed with a pigtail catheter under ultrasound guidance. Klebsiella pneum…

BACKGROUND: Bronchogenic cysts are benign congenital anomalies originating from embryonic foregut development. Although typically located in the mediastinum or lung parenchyma, retroperitoneal bronchogenic cysts are exceedingly rare, with only a limited number of cases reported in the literature. We present a case of a bronchogenic cyst situated in the left retroperitoneal space, along with a concise review of previously documented cases, summarizing their common epidemiological, clinicopathological, and prognostic features.
CASE SUMMARY: A 48-year-old female was admitted with unexplained lef…

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic anterior retroperitoneal lumbar disc herniations (ARLDHs) are exceedingly uncommon and pose a significant diagnostic challenge. The challenge arises when the disc herniation directly compresses the peripheral nerve and mimics a peripheral nerve sheath tumor (PNST). This case report highlights the difficulty in accurate radiological differentiation between a PNST and ARLDH, despite sophisticated neuroimaging techniques.
OBSERVATIONS: The authors present the case of a 70-year-old male with symptomatic right-sided L5 radiculopathy and foot drop. Initial contrast MRI sugge

A 35-year-old woman, gravida 1, para 1, underwent cesarean section in her 39th week of pregnancy. At the time of operation, multiple retroperitoneal tumors were found. Postoperative computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging showed multiple solid tumors, each approximately 3-5 cm, in the right pelvic retroperitoneal space. Total resection of the tumors was performed without any macroscopic residual. A systematic workup for the primary tumor from which the retroperitoneal tumors may have metastasized failed to demonstrate any responsible tumor. We therefore assumed it to be a primary re…

BACKGROUND Severe acute pancreatitis is a severe acute abdominal disease. Signs and symptoms classically vary from abdominal pain to fever, vomiting, and abdominal distension. Severe complications, such as infected pancreatic necrosis and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, can occur. The various treatment strategies in acute necrotizing pancreatitis include percutaneous drainage, laparoscopic necrosectomy, endoscopic necrosectomy, and minimally invasive or more hazardous open surgery. In the presently described case, the effect of puncture drainage was not significant, and then choledochosco

We report an autopsy case of a 74-year-old man with lower back pain who was referred to an orthopedic surgeon. Three days after he was prescribed acetaminophen for lumbar disc herniation, he was found dead in his bed. The autopsy revealed a perforated appendicitis attached to the retroperitoneum in the upper right abdomen, massive hemorrhages in the cecum, a retroperitoneal abscess, and skin discoloration from the abdomen to the back. The patient had died from sepsis caused by a retroperitoneal abscess and soft tissue infection secondary to perforated appendicitis adhering to the retroperitone

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of postural changes on access for the OLIF of L2 to L5 in patients with degenerative lumbar scoliosis.
METHODS: Twenty-one individuals with degenerative lumbar scoliosis were chosen at random, 11 with left-sided convexity and 10 with left-sided concavity. Axial T2-weighted images were used to measure the following variables: (1) the distance between the left psoas major muscle and the abdominal aorta; (2) the angle of the surgical access; (3) the distance between the psoas major muscle attachment point and the vertebral body's transverse axis; (4) the region

Adrenal tuberculosis (TB) is a rare disease, which is difficult to diagnose because of its atypical symptoms. We reported a 41-year-old female who was admitted to hospital due to a left adrenal tumor, which was found in health examination without any symptoms. Abdominal CT showed a mass in her left adrenal. The results of blood test were normal. A retroperitoneal laparoscopic adrenalectomy was carried out, and adrenal TB was finally pathologically diagnosed. Following this, examinations focusing on TB were conducted which revealed negative results except for T-cell enzyme-linked immunospot. Af

Retroperitoneoscopic horseshoe nephrectomy is an uncommon procedure, in particular in the paediatric practice. We present a procedure carried out via a posterior approach with a single working port in a 20 months old boy. The video goes through the technical aspect, from the positioning of the patient and the port insertion, to the end of procedure. Highlighted are the critical steps of directing the initial fascial dissection more caudal and medial compared to a standard approach for nephrectomy, as well as tips to safely ligate and divide the very short right renal vein. The operative time w

BACKGROUND Castleman's disease is a benign, lymphoproliferative disorder that is extremely uncommon. Multiple classifications have been described; however, the exact etiology remains unknown. Preoperative diagnosis is not common, as imaging cannot distinguish the disease from other processes, and biopsy is insufficient to provide the architecture of the mass, which is necessary for diagnosis. Unicentric retroperitoneal disease has been described, and management includes complete resection of the mass, which is usually curative. CASE REPORT A 34-year-old previously healthy woman presented with

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of laparoscopic adrenalectomy (LA) vs open adrenalectomy (OA) for pheochromocytoma (PHEO).
METHODS: A systematic literature research of PubMed, Ovid, Scopus, and citation lists were performed to identify eligible studies. All studies comparing LA versus OA for PHEO were included.
RESULTS: Overall, fourteen studies including 743 patients (LA 391; OA 352) were included. LA might have smaller tumor size (WMD -0.92 cm, 95% CI -1.09 to -0.76; p < 0.001) and higher body mass index (BMI) (WMD 0.31 kg/m2, 95% CI 0.04 to 0.58; p = 0.02). Compared to OA, LA
