The pathogenesis of dog's bacterial rhinitis is poorly understudied. Bergeyella zoohelcum was isolated from an animal with chronic rhinitis as primary agent. The bacterium identification was performed by both MALDI-TOF and 16S rDNA gene sequencing. The phylogenetic relationship of the strain inside de genera was demonstrated, as well as the antimicrobial susceptibility profile and the ability of biofilm formation. We highlight the virulence profile of the B. zoohelcum in, to the best of our knowledge, the first identification of B. zoohelcum as causal agent of bacterial rhinitis in dogs.

OBJECTIVE: Assessing the main allergens in the pediatric population from the largest urban area in the country.
METHODS: Clinical letters of patients referred with possible allergic rhinitis (AR) were retrospectively reviewed over the past 5 years.
RESULTS: Five hundred and fifty-five patients were included. Males suffer twice as often with AR than females and have high titers of allergens. House dust mites (44.7%) and grass pollen (29%) were the main allergens in our area, with 48% of patients sensitized to both allergens. Half of the patients had the diagnosis of AR confirmed with positive…

BACKGROUND: Inotodiol has been proven to have antitumor, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antiallergic properties. This study investigated the immunomodulatory capability of inotodiol in allergic rhinitis (AR) mice.
METHODS: Forty BALB/c mice were divided into four groups, 10 mice each: control (CON), AR with phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) treatment (AR), inotodiol treatment (AR+Ino), and dexamethasone treatment (AR+Dex). Episodes of sneezing and nose rubbing were counted. Cytokines in nasal lavage fluid (NLF) and immunoglobulin in blood serum were measured. Nasal mucosae from each group we…

Allergic rhinitis (AR) is correlated with diseases including allergic laryngitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, and chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). The unified airway model suggests that inflammation can spread in both lower and upper respiratory tracts. Moreover, some voice problems-laryngeal edema, dysphonia, and vocal nodules-have been associated with AR. We examined the association between AR and laryngeal pathology. We investigated 51,618 patients with AR between 1 January 1997 and 31 December 2013, along with 206,472 patients without AR matched based on age, gender,…

BACKGROUND: Rhinitis is the leading cause for consultation in the allergy department. It consists in chronic inflammation of the nasal mucosa. Non-allergic rhinitis with eosinophilic syndrome is characterized by chronic inflammation of the nasal mucosa (> 20% of eosinophils in nasal cytology) in the absence of demonstrable allergy (negative in vivo and in vitro tests); often it is accompanied by other sinonasal conditions (nasal polyposis, chronic rhinosinusitis), and it constitutes a risk factor for the development of obstructive sleep apnea.

BACKGROUND: Allergic rhinitis is the most common diseases affecting people in industrialized society. However, this is not a new disease and it was clinically described and treated for the first time by Rhazes (865-925 CE). The disease was also mentioned in "The Canon of Medicine" by Avicenna (980-1037).
METHODS: We searched in Scopus, Web of Science, and PubMed for "allergic rhinitis", "interactions", "non-prescription", "prescription", and in electronic copies of ITM sources the "canon" and "Al-Havi".
RESULTS: Both Persian pioneers of Medicine recommended non-pharmacologic management as an…

There are few published studies on prevalence of allergic rhinitis in preschool children. The aims of this study were to verify the prevalence, clinical characteristics, and treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR) symptoms in the first year of life adding supplementary questions to the EISL instrument. A cross-sectional study used Phase III EISL written questionnaire in addition to modified allergic rhinitis ISAAC questions. One thousand and three parents of infants answered the questionnaire: 484 (48.3%) had at least one sneezing, or a runny or blocked nose episodes without cold or flu in the fir…

BACKGROUND: National epidemiological study to observe if among patients with pollinic seasonal allergic rhinitis (SAR), there are differences between those visited by primary care physicians (GPs) or allergists (ALs).
METHODS: 758 and 739 adults were recruited respectively by GPs and ALs. The physicians filled in a questionnaire: ARIA classification, prescribed treatment, and asthma incidence. The patient completed a visual analogical scale (VAS) to evaluate the severity of the rhinitis. Rhinitis control (controlled, partially controlled, and not controlled) was assessed by physician and pati…

We sought a genotype-phenotype association: between single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in olfactory receptor (OR) genes from the two largest OR gene clusters and odor-triggered nonallergic vasomotor rhinitis (nVMR). In the initial pedigree screen, using transmission disequilibrium test (TDT) analysis, six SNPs showed "significant" p-values between 0.0449 and 0.0043. In a second case-control population, the previously identified six SNPs did not re-emerge, whereas four new SNPs showed p-values between 0.0490 and 0.0001. Combining both studies, none of the SNPs in the TDT analysis survived t…

Clinical epidemiological and pathophysiological studies suggest a strong functional and immunological relationship between the nose and the bronchi. Nasal stimulation, can induce bronchoconstriction by a proposed rhinobronchial reflex and inflammatory mediators originating from the nose could be inhaled and trigger bronchial inflammation. Bronchial provocation in sensitised subjects results in nasal inflammation through systemic circulation. There is an increased prevalence of asthma in patients with rhinitis relatively to patients without nasal complaints and allergic rhinitis patients have a…

Most patients who suffer from chronic noninfectious, nonallergic rhinitis (NINAR) cannot be assigned to a syndrome of known etiology. The symptomatology may well resemble that of allergic rhinitis; however, NINAR has lower prevalence of sneezing, conjunctival symptoms, and pruritus and higher prevalence of symptoms compatible with sinus disease. The triggers for the symptoms of NINAR are mainly irritants and changes in atmospheric conditions. Among individuals who develop chronic rhinitis symptoms, the percentage of nonallergic etiology increases steadily with age and is more than 60% beyond t…

Allergic diseases caused by inhalant allergens are considered to be a major health problem. Allergic rhinitis, now affecting about 15% of the population, represents an inflammatory reaction, that may lead to asthma and chronic sinusitis as subsequent problems. Diagnosis should be based on a step-by-step concept, that also takes the clinical relevance of sensibilisations and other forms of nasal hyperreactivity into account. The aims of therapy are to limit the inflammatory reaction and to restore patient's quality of life. To achieve this goal, avoidance measures, immunotherapy and antiallergi…

Runny noses, sneezing, nasal congestion, and other nuisance symptoms are part and parcel of primary care practice. But how can you quickly discern which symptoms are related to common colds and which stem from allergic rhinitis? Careful history taking usually provides clues, but allergy testing may be needed when triggers are not clear. In this first of two articles on allergic rhinitis, Dr Ferguson explains what to look for, what questions to ask, when to test for allergies, and how to modify a patient's environment to minimize problems. The second article, beginning on page 117, discusses ph…

Allergic rhinitis is conventionally treated with anti-histamine or immunotherapy, although in many cases the results are unsatisfactory. Using a contact type Nd:YAG laser we have succeeded in relieving the symptoms of rhinitis by thermocoagulating only the inferior turbinate, making this a quick and effective form of treatment. The subjects were 60 patients with severe house-dust induced allergic rhinitis presented to the out-patient clinic of the ENT department of Nagoya City University Hospital. There were 25 men and 35 women ranging in age from 17 to 53 years. Patients were irradiated at an…

Chronic rhinitis can be defined as an inflammation of the nasal mucosa lasting for more than three months. The condition may be due to allergy or infection, or to a number of non-allergic and non-infectious causes, such as trauma, hormonal imbalance, toxic influence or locally applied drugs. The etiology, diagnostic procedures and treatment of non-allergic chronic rhinitis are discussed.

In 29 patients with nasal obstruction, sneezing and water-like nasal discharge the allergic tests were negative. However, the cytologic examinations of their nasal discharge founded 20% of eosinophil The IgE serum level was normal in 21 patients and in 8 was distinctly elevated. In 21 patients the non-allergic rhinitis was diagnosed and in remaining 8 the suspicion of allergy without proved agent.

In an attempt to understand how theophylline achieves its in vivo therapeutic effect, a double-blind crossover study of the effect of theophylline on the immediate response of the upper airways to challenge with antigen was performed. Ten subjects with allergic rhinitis were challenged with increasing doses of antigen extract, and their responses were assessed by counting the number of sneezes and measuring the level of histamine, N-alpha-p-tosyl-L-arginine-methyl ester-esterase activity, and kinin in nasal secretions. One-week premedication with theophylline led to serum levels in the therape…
